This is just one of those things any rapidly developing country must address sooner or later. Just as people realise that the expectation that "house prices will rise forever" is a myth, they will also realise this other myth "getting a degree will get me a better job". It may have been true when only 5% of a cohort is university educated, but it will not be true when 50% of a cohort has a degree. People must be realistic in their expectations.

It's just basic supply and demand. In the US where everyone is college educated due to student loans, the blue collar workers actually earn more. You have to understand that even the Hispanic immigrants have their kids finish college as well. It's not even just skilled labor. Everyone is aware that plumbers, carpenters, welders and commercial drivers are earning big money nowadays but it's actually not limited to those. I know someone who's a "baby nurse", basically a nanny for newborn infants charging $300-$500 a day just to babysit an infant while their college educated parents work. The house cleaning business is also very lucrative if you are independent and do your own marketing. No one thinks of cleaning toilets as lucrative but it is so long as you speak English and you don't have to give a cut to agencies (which is why hispanic immigrants earn less because of the agency's cut).

As long as population/immigration keeps increasing faster than new houses are being built, why wont house prices keep rising? The UK has many more immigrants entering the country every year than there are houses for them. Now they're putting them in hotels. Not entirely, China has a significant shortage of skilled workers in certain fields, such as in semiconductors. But Chinese universities are just not producing enough of the kind of talent and skills needed by the market, and too many university students are taking degrees which are not useful in the market. China also needs better technical schools to produce workers like skilled builders, electricians, high tech assembly workers etc. A big part of the problem is that parents often have outdated attitudes towards university education which they impose on their children and essentially set them up for failure. The Chinese education system also over-emphasises rote learning which, again, doesn't nurture the creative skills which the market needs.

The youth unemployment rate in china is calculated based on whether you can find jobs the first year you graduate. So lets say you find a job the second year after you graduate you are still considered unemployed for the youth data. Also the company you work for must be legally registered for taxes, so if you work for a company that pays cash its also not calculated. Thus the unemployment rate is actually much lower than 21%. However, the quality of jobs in China is indeed of question and salary for the second biggest economy in the world is still very very low.

Education is to train how you think and optimize your talents in different sectors. Rapid technological change may not help pressing social needs, and despite rising connectivity, many feel lonely and voiceless. Many of such deep transformations require not only local, but also global solutions. Education systems are certainly influenced by these trends, but they also have the power to affect them. For example, schools are called to help children develop the types of skills, knowledge and competencies required of a 21st century global labour market, but they should also help prepare the new generations for creating the jobs of the future, those that do not exist yet. What these recent trends mean for each education system is a pressing and open-ended question for policy makers, teachers, parents, and students who are ultimately responsible for the future of education in a world characterized by uncertainty, diversity, and rapid changes.

China Will Be Less Hard Hit by the Global Economic Downturn. The “toxic assets” that have shaken US and European governments and brought their financial systems to the brink of collapse have had little effect on China. Rapid declines in global commodity prices have benefited China’s manufacturing base, helping to cushion the drop in demand. China is taking advantage of lower prices and aggressively acquiring companies that produce raw materials. Lower international prices have also relieved inflationary pressures in China’s domestic economy. As a proportion of gross domestic product, the PRC government’s ¥4 trillion ($585 billion) stimulus package is nearly three times larger than the United States’ initial $789 billion stimulus. On February 1, China launched a program that offers rural consumers a 13 percent subsidy to buy certain computers, television sets, refrigerators, and mobile phones. The PRC State Council, China’s highest-ranking administrative body, has also announced a similar program for several cities and various subsidies to promote industry revitalization. China has accrued nearly $2 trillion in foreign-exchange reserves and can easily afford further stimulus, if needed, without relying on external borrowing. High personal savings rates mean that China’s consumers are much better positioned to weather a temporary economic slowdown than their debt-strapped US counterparts. China has ample opportunity for industrial consolidation and can continue sidelining antiquated or inefficient capacity.

This stat serve no purpose. What the Chinese government should be publishing is the number graduate in each age group and each discipline that are unemployed per city and region. The problem of graduate to industry mismatch is a serious problem in all countries. The youth needs this information to plan his career and Universities need it to plan its intake. The government also need to manage quality and quantity of Universities to be approved and licensed. Of course the government also needs to find our the employment demand of each industry in each region and city.

China is the most populated country in this world and though it is large but it is still not the biggest spacious country in this world. You don't really need so many humans in this world to work for the sake of working and beside you can use machines and technology nowadays to do work making the excess human population even more redundant already. Stiff competition between nations doing the same work vying for the same limited global market in life, income disparity between generations and different economic climate between eras are all factors too that causes unemployment rate in today time. Never understand why humans can't beat the instinct to breed just for the same cycle to repeat on a whole new person again.

Im not chinese, but please help me understand these statistics because aren’t 16 - 24 year olds normally considered full time students? I mean, what is considered the normal age to start full time work in china? 15?
@Thatsh1tsdingo Жыл бұрын
In what world is18-24 year olds "normally considered students"? Most of the world does not pursue education after 18. Even in the U.S., only about 35% of those age 25 or older have a bachelor degree.. One quick google search would tell you that. Even in many parts of the world, high school education isn't attained by the majority. Even in the U.S. only 87% of the people finish high school. In other words, many many many people start working once they finish high school at 17 or 18. Some may not even finish high school and start working at 16-17 in the U.S. and in MANY places in the world. It's not uncommon AT ALL. Your confusion is a result of your ignorance.

@@Thatsh1tsdingo many of those not going into universities go into skilled trades. I think it's safe to say that the majority of people get some sort of professional education.
