Its because Jamaicans have been displaced. Lets not even start with now l, lets to back to windrush era where UK got our best minds and our best hands to labor for them in the 40s-50s then tell us the whole Island is illiterate when (fake) election time comes but yet yall barred doctors, athletes, masons, etc and told them if they couldn’t find work in England, “dont come home”. Theres a whole newspaper article about this family. The braindrain started when they tricked our grands to go out of Jamaica and leave their land for a weak ass job in UK and then dont give them papers to return. Yeah thats why nobody grands was here to tell them dont vote for no fake ass independence that foreigners brought us. We were independent before that if you actually study the jurisdiction of the UK legislation in Jamaica. They had power only over their small quarters, not the whole Island. But yeah yall keep thinking its a now a days thing when they made sure (Manleys and Clarke’s/Bustamonte) made sure of that. Then let the Peace Corp come to Jamaica to live tac and duty free (this is CIA debrief on the destabilization of Jamaica). Its not even a secret. www.cia.gov/readingroom/docs/CIA-RDP90-00845R000100190003-4.pdf

The primary reason is that the education system produces more educated people than the economy can support. Than the tertiary education system can educate so from the beginning people received bursaries to study abroad. Before crime became a major issue in the 70s you had significant emigration even if it was only temporary. The economy will never be able to support everyone especially people that study hard sciences as it is an island and heavy industries cannot and likely should not thrive there.
@svst3767
@svst3767 Жыл бұрын
What means „that the economy can support“.? Markets are not created out of the blue but by ppl who create needs for new products and services . The real issue here is that the graduates of this generation and culture don’t have an entrepreneurial mindset- rather they choose a nine to five in already established usually white men institutions. And the latter are more likely be found in the states than in Ja ofc. If Jamaicans would put the creativity they show for entertainment and sports into „real life“ markets there wouldn’t be a lack of demand for high quality labour on the island..

Adam, everything was fine until I read your last five words. Was there a typo? Do you mind explaining?
@adamstern5116
@adamstern5116 Жыл бұрын
@@kattahb4103 there is no typo. Islands are space limited which presents environmental and economic challenges to industries such as steel, technology manufacturing and auto manufacturing. HEAVY industries should not be on islands due to damaging effects they can have on the local ecosystem as one main reason. Jamaica has one or two major river ecosystems. Things like chemical runoff can affect that river water and render areas of crucial land and living space useless for generations. The other challenge is the raw energy that is required. Jamaica has no significant source of cheap reliable energy. Neither does Cuba- almost the size of the UK (or even Trinidad). That kind of energy comes from hydropower, nuclear power and vast amounts of imported oil. That said light fabrication of pre-made imported products for subsequent export is an option. There is little pollution and energy required there. Of course labour becomes another issue with that.

This guy does not know what he is talking about the migration in the 1970s, the only people was leaving Jamaica in those days. For development of Jamaica, because the PNP party government ministers them was on a development program. To build thousands of houses across Jamaica, so what that person is saying. Maybe he is from Jamaica,I was born and grow there and. I started to work in the Bauxite industry in 1973, when the Bauxite companies was in full operation during those days. Where the Bauxite companies is hiring people with technical skills, because this person may not know.That the PNP party government won the election in 1955, and the Bauxite companies was about enter Jamaica and,In 1958 Reynolds Jamaica mines . Was shipping away Bauxite out of the Port of Ochi Rios to the United States, to the smelters in Baton rouge and Grammacy New Orleans and. The PNP party government ministers them built 4 technical schools in the Bauxite companies them areas,in order to supply them. With technical skills workers, things only change in the 1980s when. The jlp party came to power in 1980 and in the 1980s, they followed the instructions of the united states government. To closed down the Bauxite companies them, also killed out the ganja fields. Also close down the training centers across Jamaica, where hundreds of young people was learning some form of skills. That is when the economics of Jamaica really got a beaten, because the Jlp party government ministers them in the 1980s . Locked down the major companies across Jamaica,on the advice of the united states'.I worked in the Bauxite industry for 22 years, so I know what am saying. There are a lot of people is writing a lot of nonsense about Jamaica and, they were not born and grow there like me. I could write ✍️ before 1962 independence august 6 th about Jamaica, so I don't haveto read someone else opinion. It took me 2 years to open a bank account in Jamaica and it was way harder for me than for any Jamaican ever would, because bank needs references and I knew nobody, so I couldn't get references. Bank also needs a proof of address and I didn't have it, because rented property can't change name for JPS/NWC, and phone bill was not good enough and I have no property until now. Also, they needed a letter from JP who knows me for at least a year and I didn't have such a JP. Also they needed a work permit to open a bank account, because if I don't have it - I'm not eligible to apply. To get a work permit is another 100 step process that takes 6 months. So... each time I hear in the comments that "white people get it easier in Jamaica" - it makes me wonder - are you sure we live in the same Jamaica?

I originally left Ukraine because it was my child's dream to live in a country with no winter - I have a skin condition - my skin peels off when it's exposed to cold, so each winter I had to have several extra layers of clothes, including covering the face. When I left Ukraine - I went to live in England for 6 years, then to Egypt, then came back to Ukraine, then went to live in India, then back in Ukraine and only then came to Jamaica. My next country was supposed to be Costa Rica, but I fell in love with Jamaica and stayed here for longer than I initially planned. This is not because of better living/opportunity, but despite all the hardships I had to go through. It was really the people of Jamaica who made me fall in love with the country and hence I decided to settle here at least for several years before I manage to get a boat and will be able to live in the sea, so I'd always be on the move from place to place. The reason why you will make it big in Jamaica being a foreigner and many Jamaicans don't is because of the slavery past. Ideologies developed by the ruling classes which set ordinary Jamaicans against each other and see them trusting people who look like you more than their fellow Jamaicans. For example, they will patrionize your business and Chinese businesses more than their own. It more complicated but tine is limited but everything said is true.

There aren't many job opportunities in Jamaica like aboard. Business opportunities are here but it's very challenging and easy to fail without much needed connections and endorsements. Most Jamaicans are interested in working for someone or hustling (low income self employment)

As a Jamaican I can tell my point of view. Most people that are unable to see the greatness here is because they were taught that it’s unattainable. I don’t mean someone came and teach them that. The system showed that to them. They see these things from a tender age. It takes forever to get important documents and it’s even harder when you’re trying to get something when u hardly have anything. What I see is that some Jamaicans notice the greatness and are Able to make use of it after leaving the country. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing because at least some get the ch ce to recognize it. When they leave they’re able to make more money and the ones that want to invest find those opportunities after. Some on the other end just want to go abroad so they can return and pretend to be a foreigner. At the end of the day, I can understand why many Jamaicans just don’t see Jamaica as profitable. From crime to the government and their nonsense 🤷🏽‍♀️ I haven’t left Jamaica and I recognize a lot of opportunities here and I’m aware that te key is to work smart. If you’re intelligent you should know how far networking and building or relationship can take you. It’s already hard here so working hard might not be the ONLY solution, working smart is important. And tbh this country will make it easier for foreigners sometimes.

The answer is pretty simple and structural: IMF loan conditionalities restricted where and how money could be spent. There was massive divestment from education, infrastructure and healthcare in the neoliberal 80s. The existing business structures are culturally alienating to Jamaicans and are gate kept by a handful of oligarchic families that red tape progress with a maddening bureaucracy that is bypassed by knowing the right people and making the correct connections, guaranteeing the same families retain power. Hence, social mobility depends solely on social buy in. In situations like this, crime spikes. Crime isn’t a function of poverty, but a function of relative poverty and the difficulty of the hierarchical climb. There is a lot of money here. It’s just in very few hands. And a large percentage of the real economy is black market activity which has created parallel economies managed by area dons/warlords who funnel the youth into killing each other for scraps so they won’t rebel against the system. It’s really an elegantly designed oppression with classist and racist components. And that oppression’s maintenance depends upon and is informed by the United States’s hegemony.

you are right, from 2019 El Salvador has reduced their homicide rate significantly, though it's still unclear if it's something that will last or if it's a temporary situation like it was the case in Jamaica in 2011 after a fight with the gang leader. In any case, the point of the video is not about what's happening today, but rather about the historical situation with the "brain drain" in Jamaica, so covering the period from 1962 to present, that's why I brought up ElSalvador as an example, because during these years its homicide rate was much higher than in Jamaica, yet it never experienced such high brain drain like Jamaica has.

@@JAMAICAWITHIRIE With respect Irie that is because the educational institutions to produce secondary or even tertiary educated people per capita historically are not as numerous in El Salvador. Look at per capita tertiary educated Salvadoreños vs Jamaicans. Also, a more apt comparison would have been emigration rates from El Salvador to Spain or to larger Latin American economies. Larger South American economies also take up a lot of the skilled labour migration within the Spanish speaking mundial. Of course this approach would not control for proximity but we are focusing on skilled labour. Additionally almost all Latin American countries have visa on entry with Spain and are able to work there. All told in the main you are correct. I did want to add one point: that the British initially planned for Jamaica to (Believe it or not) fall under Canadian rule and so the education system took into account a greater degree of flexibility with regard to Jamaicans going to Canada to work. So emigration was almost built into the secondary and tertiary system. Consider that even today our students do A-levels just as they do in the UK. Spanish speaking countries do not have such a unified approach to education and this likely due to how they gained independence (war of liberty vs planned transfer of power).

My main "agenda" for being in Jamaica is openly available in the video "Why choose Jamaica" - one of the first on this channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYGnfmh8f9aapsU As for your questions about Ukraine: Ukrainian economy is not better than Jamaica's. Ukraine's GDP per capita is 4,835 USD, Jamaica's 5,183 USD (data for 2021). Ukraine is a country that has been in the center of many many wars for the last 400 years (including WW1 and WW2) and it has also gone through multiple famines in the 20th century. Ukraine was occupied by russia during the USSR times and people were brainwashed with communism nonsense, all of which has completely destroyed our economy. However, emigration from Ukraine before the war was 14%, Jamaica's is 38%, and this is because the reasons for emigration from Ukraine are totally different from the reasons for emigration from Jamaica.

You asked why are Jamaicans leaving? Here is some information for you to digest: I have been thinking about and observing the social and economic condition in Jamaica with a focus on large and small businesses. My curiosity and inquiry opened me eyes to some very disturbing facts. Jamaicans of African descent are mostly not participating in the primary economic activities of the country. They do not own any major industries including tourism, our biggest export, bauxite mining, telecommunications companies, cement or any retail grocery stores. The owners of these companies and businesses are foreigners or foreign born Jamaicans whose functions it seem is to extract from the country it’s wealth while socially separated from the average Jamaican. What does this mean for local businesses participation in the economic development of our country? It means that the average Jamaican has limited access to real businesses opportunities to build a sustainable economic middle class. The evidence is so glaring when one walks downtown any Main Street in any village or town, a majority of the small stores and shops are all operated by recent immigrants from various countries many of whom do not speak or understand the Jamaican culture or language. How is this possible when so many Jamaicans are natural entrepreneurs and socially adaptable. Why is it that most left out Jamaican entrepreneurs find success in such hostile countries towards immigrants? Where are these foreigners getting capital to start these businesses and who is inviting and sponsoring them? Why is the government not promoting and supporting localized Jamaican entrepreneurship? I believe the answer is government is powerless to go against the wishes of the ruling economic elites who sets the agenda for the governance of the country. I compare this situation with Jamaicans dominance in sports, Jamacia’s world dominance in contrast to the USA’s vastness, it’s wealth superior training facilities and financial support. Our athletes for years lacked proper training facilities and financial support yet we compete on the highest levels in all sports competitions. The athletes who bring glory to Jamaica are usually from the local population l have never I seen any one representing Jamaica in any world class sport activities or in music from the elite controlling class, why is that so? If the local Jamaican citizens can participate and excel in sports and music at world class levels, why are they not allowed an equal opportunity at entrepreneurship? These are questions to be answered and probed by Build Back Jamaica, perhaps we should be focusing our energies more on Building A Better Jamaica that will be inclusive of all it’s peoples. I welcome you comments and feedback.
