Nicolai Gogol's novel about a 16th Century Cossack, Taras Boulba (Harry Bauer) seeks to regain control of his Ukraine homeland by sending his son to secretly study under the occupying Poles. Complications ensue when the young man falls in love with a Polish girl. This British version of the 1936 French film, “Tarrass Boulba,” utilizes much of the non-dialogue footage from the earlier production.

A bunch of lies. It's nowhere close to Gogol's book. The name of the older Taras Bulba's sone is Ostap. He was not fond of studying, but he did complete his education with high marks. Catholic Poles were humiliating Ukrainian Orthodox Christians prohibiting them to worship in line with the Eastern Orthdox rite. That's the reason Taras and his sons declared a war on Poles. Andrew, blinded by love, switched sides betraying his people and his faith. In the book it says that Andrew ferecley fought the cossacs wounding and killing them. That's why Taras shot Andrew saying "I gave you life, I'll take it." Ostap captured by "enlightened" Poles was tortured in the most barbaric way. I think these are worthy reasons to not mention the name of Nikolay Gogol as the writer whose book this mockery is based on.
