Cool , I have a 1964 ford fairlane 500 as well. I like your idea for the bumper. Question, can you use the old bracket with the fiberglass bumper.

Before you put the new tank in, put a drain plug in it. It might also be a good idea to plumb it for an electric pump and return line. As long as you're not going to narrow the 8-inch, it's probably okay to keep it, but if you're gonna do anything to it, you should probably upgrade to a 9-inch. Even if you stay with 28-spline axles, a 9-inch is MUCH stronger. Always opt for over-building the car. Just sayin... (I have a 64 Fairlane with a 429 in it. I love these cars.)

Like he said , the 8” is weak for a performance build. Put your hard earned coins into a 9” with 31 spline axels.

I’ve been around Fords for close to fifty years and I’m sorry to see you’ve wasted your money on the 8”, the small pinion and pinion bearings limits horsepower to around 300 with limited traction before parts breakage is a problem. My choice for my 64 was a n 8.8 from an Explorer that I had Quick Performance narrow. That’s 31 spline LD, 3.73 gears and disc brakes that I don’t have to worry about fracturing with my 450hp 289… The 8” isn’t worth the cost of a ring and pinion.

I’m going to be making around 300ish HP anyway, so what’s the issue? I’ve talked to people who drag race with 8”s and haven’t had any issues. I got a spare 8.8 in the back of the shop if this 8” blows. I’m building this car to be a cruiser/fun street car, not a drag racer.
