The great fight between the Christian Kingdoms and the Muslim states of the Iberian peninsula rages on. Ferdinand I of the county of Castile comes to power and brings his small land to the forefront of the Christian Reconquest. The fight continues with his son, Alfonso VI who takes the city of Toledo in 1085. The Taifas have no choice but to bring in the help of the powerful Almoravids of North Africa, who end up subjugating Al Andalus but also push back the Reconquista.

yeah, but sometimes these kings would have more offspring then they could easily count and would also have a host of illegitimate kids as well. But I'm sure this was done quite a bit regardless. that just shows that the Visigoths never really "civilized" themselves by this point in time, practicing Gavelkin inheritance just like the norse and german tribes, caring more about PERSONAL wealth then creation of a strong, unified state... Basically the same reason why the Reconquista halted and took tribute from every muslim state instead of "re-conquering" them. Why have land you need to govern, maintain, defend and other problems, when you can just extort them of money?

@@Shadow.24772 I do not think that personal wealth is the driving force behind gavelkind succesion systems, not always. Tribal societies are nasty... and with that I mean the way violence manifest itself. If you read on tribal warfare from different sources you can contrast how bloody and fraticidal it gets. I believe many times gavelkind work to prevent that your own offspring tryed to kill each other or at least give the others a chances to survive from depredations of the more beligerants. Paradoxically that happened almost everytime.

A forensics team performed a study on Bermudo III on 1997 and concluded that he was pierced 16 times rather than 40, which is still a whole lot. Cause of death was a spear thrust through the right eye socket, ripping apart the upper jawbone. Gory... Apparently his horse decided to go faster than the rest of the army and he got himself in the middle of the enemy troops alone. He was killed before anyone could come rescue him. Apparently his father Alfonso V didn't have much luck in the battlefield either, as he died from a dart to the chest after he removed his torso armor because he was too hot...

For this particular episode I had to divide it up into smaller bits for each kingdom. I personally don't like making them this short - it derails the flow of the narrative, hence the reason I added the recaps to the beginning. What if I combined all these smaller bits into one video when I'm done with Episode 9?

There are so many stories to cover around this period. It would be good if you spoke, not only about reconquista, but about repopulation. In Castile particulary(which was a frontier zone and victim of andalusian attacks), the new lots of land belonged to those brave enough to defend it, since christian kings were barely able to do so. These people plowed the land with a sword on their waist, and a horse ready to flee or attack at any moment. The count of Castile was basically a judge and military leader, not a "lord", and peasants were mostly exempted of paying taxes. These privileges are documented in so called "cartas puebla" and "fueros". So in a period of feudalism, you have these free peasants, it's quite remarkable. Anyway, you're doing a very good job and I hope you continue the series ad eternum! :D edit: crappy ortography in a couple of words.

Wikipedia: The Reconquista[a] (Spanish and Portuguese for "reconquest") is a name used in English to describe the period in the history of the Iberian Peninsula of about 780 years between the Umayyad conquest of Hispania in 711 and the fall of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada to the expanding Christian kingdoms in 1491. The completed conquest of Granada was the context of the Spanish voyages of discovery and conquest (Columbus got royal support in Granada in 1492, months after its conquest), and the Americas-the "New World"-ushered in the era of the Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires. Traditional historiography has marked the beginning of the Reconquista with the Battle of Covadonga (718 or 722), the first known victory in Iberia by Christian military forces since the 711 military intervention in Iberia of combined Arab-Berber forces. In that small battle, a group led by the nobleman Pelagius defeated a Muslim patrol in the mountains of northern Iberia and established the independent Christian Kingdom of Asturias. The taifas of al-Andalus tried to prevent the Christian threats from the north by paying them parias (a form of tribute). After a Muslim resurgence in the 12th century the great Moorish strongholds in the south fell to Christian forces in the 13th century-Córdoba in 1236 and Seville in 1248-leaving only the Muslim enclave of Granada as a tributary state in the south. After 1491, the entire peninsula was controlled by Christian rulers. The conquest was followed by the Alhambra Decree (1492) which expelled Jews who would not convert to Christianity from Castile and Aragon, and a series of edicts (1499-1526) which forced the conversions of the Muslims in Spain, although later a significant part of them was expelled from the Iberian Peninsula.[2][3] Since the mid-19th century, the idea of a "reconquest" took hold in Spain associated with its rising nationalism and colonialism.[4]

Alfonso III of Asturias repopulated the strategically important city León and established it as his capital. King Alfonso began a series of campaigns to establish control over all the lands north of the Douro river. He reorganized his territories into the major duchies (Galicia and Portugal) and major counties (Saldaña and Castile), and fortified the borders with many castles. At his death in 910 the shift in regional power was completed as the kingdom became the Kingdom of León. From this power base, his heir Ordoño II was able to organize attacks against Toledo and even Seville. The Caliphate of Córdoba was gaining power, and began to attack León. King Ordoño allied with Navarre against Abd-al-Rahman, but they were defeated in Valdejunquera in 920. For the next 80 years, the Kingdom of León suffered civil wars, Moorish attack, internal intrigues and assassinations, and the partial independence of Galicia and Castile, thus delaying the reconquest and weakening the Christian forces. It was not until the following century that the Christians started to see their conquests as part of a long-term effort to restore the unity of the Visigothic kingdom. The only point during this period when the situation became hopeful for León was the reign of Ramiro II. King Ramiro, in alliance with Fernán González of Castile and his retinue of caballeros villanos, defeated the Caliph in Simancas in 939. After this battle, when the Caliph barely escaped with his guard and the rest of the army was destroyed, King Ramiro obtained 12 years of peace, but he had to give González the independence of Castile as payment for his help in the battle. After this defeat, Moorish attacks abated until Almanzor began his campaigns. Alfonso V finally regained control over his domains in 1002. Navarre, though attacked by Almanzor, remained intact. The conquest of León did not include Galicia which was left to temporary independence after the withdrawal of the Leonese king. Galicia was conquered soon after (by Ferdinand, son of Sancho the Great, around 1038). However, this brief period of independence meant that Galicia remained a kingdom and fief of Leon, which is the reason it is part of Spain and not Portugal. Subsequent kings titled themselves kings of Galicia and León, instead of merely king of León as the two were united personally and not in union.

Ferdinand I of León was the leading king of the mid-11th century. He conquered Coimbra and attacked the taifa kingdoms, often demanding the tributes known as parias. Ferdinand's strategy was to continue to demand parias until the taifa was greatly weakened both militarily and financially. He also repopulated the Borders with numerous fueros. Following the Navarrese tradition, on his death in 1064 he divided his kingdom between his sons. His son Sancho II of Castile wanted to reunite the kingdom of his father and attacked his brothers, with a young noble at his side: Rodrigo Díaz, later known as El Cid Campeador. Sancho was killed in the siege of Zamora by the traitor Bellido Dolfos (also known as Vellido Adolfo) in 1072. His brother Alfonso VI took over León, Castile and Galicia. Alfonso VI the Brave gave more power to the fueros and repopulated Segovia, Ávila and Salamanca. Once he had secured the Borders, King Alfonso conquered the powerful Taifa kingdom of Toledo in 1085. Toledo, which was the former capital of the Visigoths, was a very important landmark, and the conquest made Alfonso renowned throughout the Christian world. However, this "conquest" was conducted rather gradually, and mostly peacefully, during the course of several decades. It was not until after sporadic and consistent population resettlements had taken place that Toledo was decisively conquered. Alfonso VI was first and foremost a tactful monarch who chose to understand the kings of taifa and employed unprecedented diplomatic measures to attain political feats before considering the use of force. He adopted the title Imperator totius Hispaniae ("Emperor of all Hispania", referring to all the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula, and not just the modern country of Spain). Alfonso's more aggressive policy towards the taifas worried the rulers of those kingdoms, who called on the African Almoravids for help.

Real, legendary, and fictional episodes from the Reconquista are the subject of much of medieval Galician-Portuguese, Spanish, and Catalan literature such as the cantar de gesta. Some noble genealogies show the close relations (although not very numerous) between Muslims and Christians. For example, Al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir, whose rule is considered to have marked the peak of power for Moorish Al-Andalus Iberia, married Abda, daughter of Sancho Garcés II of Navarra, who bore him a son, named Abd al-Rahman and commonly known in pejorative sense as Sanchuelo (Little Sancho; in Arabic: Shanjoul). After his father's death, Sanchuelo/Abd al-Rahman, as a son of a Christian princess, was a strong contender to take over the ultimate power in Muslim al-Andalus. A hundred years later, King Alfonso VI of Castile, considered among the greatest of the Medieval Spanish kings, designated as his heir his son (also a Sancho) by the refugee Muslim princess Zaida of Seville. The Reconquista was a war with long periods of respite between the adversaries, partly for pragmatic reasons and also due to infighting among the Christian kingdoms of the North spanning over seven centuries. Some populations practiced Islam or Christianity as their own religion during these centuries, so the identity of contenders changed over time.

Appreciate that! I’m self taught. My day job has nothing to do with either history or video editing / animation. I’d like to think I’m a quick learner. So I just bought this program and did a few tutorials on KZbin. Played around with the settings and came up with a few mods. In fact, I only started with this program about 8 months ago. I’m happy you like the results

Aragon and Portugal next ? Also is that true about Ottoman only send few troops during the last day of Emirate of Granada to help the last emir ? Also why do you think Morocco Sultan and Ottoman do not join forces and ally reclaim back Al Andalus ?
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 5 жыл бұрын
Yes - going to do Portugal next and Aragon I will leave for the end. As for the Ottomans - I think they figured that Al Andalus was a lost cause. But not to show that they attempted to help - even a little - would have been bad form.

Alfonso I of Aragón doesn't seem to have died in the battle of Fraga from an arrow to the eye. At least I couldn't find information on it. He did die 1-2 months later from the wounds of the battle though.
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 5 жыл бұрын
From what I read he got the arrow to the eye and died from wounds a few days later. I couldn't really add these smaller details as it would affect the flow of the narrative. Not sure if a human could live for 1-2 months after sustaining such a wound. The bone structure behind the eye would have been easily pierced and the brain lies right behind it. Whats more, bacterial infection would have set in very quickly and could easily have spread to the surrounding tissue - including the relatively porous cribriform bone - right above the nose where he could have developed a brain abscess or some other horrible thing.

which one of your sources list's Alfonso as emperor? In the Christian world at least until the 16th/17th century it was thought that there could only be 1 emperor (this is the reason why the Holy Roman Empire was created, at the time the title of emperor was thought to be vacant because the Byzantine emperor was a woman), if he styled himself as emperor at a time when the Holy Roman Empire was still in existence and the Emperor was crowned by the pope in Rome himself it would seem like a major oversight by other Christian powers for someone to claim such power and authority and not act upon it...

The military expansion of Castile in the Iberian Peninsula was not able to extinguish the nations that make up the DNA of this territory. The availability of information nowadays creates a fertile ground for Spaniards to uncover different perspectives on the history of Spain that are not necessarily consistent with the unified and centralized view that has always been taught in schools throughout the country. Even the name of the country itself is not in line with the historical and geographical reality. Spain derives from the name the Romans gave to the whole Peninsula which was Hispania. It is an undue appropriation to use that name to designate only one of the countries that currently constitute that territory, the other one being Portugal (Andorra and Gibraltar can be included in this argument as well). Since it was Castile that has succeeded in imposing their language, laws, government structure and culture on the remaining ones it would be more accurate to call the country Castile and not Spain.

@Reg Eric It's easier as it is a diplomatic approach to make the those peoples feel part of a common political project. However it is not the reflexion of the political integration that has occurred. The major milestones of political integration have occurred though military conquest: the conquest of the kingdom of Granada, the conquest of the kingdom of Navarra, the war of Spanish succession. The crown of Aragon did not want to be integrated in the crown of Castile. That's why it has fought to stay independent. As it found itself in the losing side of that war it saw the Nueva Planta decrees imposed on it and it was integrated in Castile. The fact that Castile decided to rebrand itself as Spain doesn't change the reality of the facts. Unlike what most people think, Spain was only established as a kingdom in 1716 with the application of those decrees. All references to Spain before that are in the geographical concept of the term. What existed prior to that were the crown of Castile and the crown of Aragon.

I've been enjoying the series greatly so far, but wanted to pass on the creators an inconsistency from this episode. Bermudo III, the last Asturian king of León was killed in the Battle of Tamarón, a territorial conflict with his brother-in-law, the Count of Castile, Fernando. Fernando was backed and reinforced for this battle by the forces of his brother, García Sánchez, the king of Pamplona. When the opposing sides met, the Leonese king, Bermudo, rushed ahead of his own knights into the Castilian lines, searching for his adversary Fernando. According to contemporary sources, he was set upon by seven Castilian knights and killed. A modern autopsy found that Bermudo received 16 lance-inflicted wounds, almost all of them deemed mortal, before he was recovered and carried away by Leonese forces. There are medieval claims that he was pierced by some 40 stabs wounds...but, in the pursuit of historical accuracy, these are now considered to be exaggerated, hyperbolic claims. Here is the source regarding the death wounds of Bermudo III: elpais.com/cultura/2018/10/09/actualidad/1539086668_335320.html
