Күн бұрын

The Christian War of Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula continues. The fight between the Christian Kingdoms and the Muslim States of Al Andalus is now seen through the birth of a new country, Portugal. The History of Portugal begins with western Knights that made their way in to help after the disaster of the Battle of Sagrajas. Soon Henry from Burgundy and his son Alfonso I Henriques (soon to be known as Afonso the Conqueror) lay down the foundation of what will be, in time, a world empire.

wonderful illustrations but a number of inaccuracies: Afonso was in the south and it was the Bishop of Braga that invited the crusaders to plunder Lisbon. The crusader army, to my knowledge, arrived by sea; it did not disembark in Porto to make its way to Lisbon by land.
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 5 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha you’re right, but to animate all that and keep the flow of narrative flowing wouldn’t have worked out. Besides, the Bishop was working under the orders of Afonso so the end result was the same. But there are references that the initial meeting was in Porto

Portugal and Spain have an intrisec and rich history. Later the two crowns would unite in the event called Union Iberiaca, ironically, the throne of Portugal became vacant because King Don Sebastião of Portugal in search of the glory of his ancestors in the "Reconquista", died in a campaign against the Kingdom of Morocco in 1578. After a War for the Succession of the Throne, most of the members of the Council of Governors of the Kingdom of Portugal supported Philip II of Spain as moderating power and put an end to internal disputes. This union lasted from 1580 to 1640, and only came to an end after a long War of Independence (War of the Restoration 1640 and 1668) that would put the House of Bragança in power in Portugal. For my country Brazil, this union was fundamental, because the immense power of Spain at the time, this contributed and much for the colonization of the interior of Brazil. Later, after independence, the first Emperor of Brazil would be from the house of Bragança, Emperor Pedro I of Bragança and Bourbon (1822 - 1831), who also became King of Portugal (1826) after abdicating the throne of Brazil in favor of his son Pedro II. Congratulations for the excellent work, I love your work, Greetings from Brazil to Flash Point History and to all those who love history. P.s.: Sorry about my English.

This batle is epic, but there is other that i sink is better. When d. Afonso Henriques is old, is Son d. Sancho start to roole the country. And in that time , the almoad califa imself go to iberic península whith a great army and ataque Portugal and seage Santarém and d.sancho os seaged in Santarém. When d. Afonso Henriques know that is Son is seaged in Santarém he come whith a army and ataque the califa. In that time the califa think that is all ok and send half of is army to seaged lisbon. In that time d. Afonso Henriques ataque the califa army, the califa had homed whith a Arrow and the almoad sink the califa is dead and start to roone away. In the almoads skape the califa himself die. I think that this batle is more epic because the d. Afonso Henriques is old man and he whin the califa that came to iberic península personaly to give a lesson to the portuguese and die... D. Afonso os the portuguese King that i more apreciate

However some crusade crossed the river Tejo to fish near the city of Almada"Almadam",just in front of Lisbon. The mourish attack and kill some. There was punishing attack on the city after it,the sloter the population,and distroy the castle (there non there until this day). The deeds of Ser Martim Moniz, Captain at the service of King Afonso Henriques, will always be associated with the siege of Lisbon. When St.George´s Castle was itself put under siege he noticed some moorish defenders atempting to close it´s doors. The good captain died a glorious death by leading an attack on the doors and using his own body to prevent them being completely shut, giving his fellow christians enough time to secure them and eventually take the castle. In his honor, the entrance was dubbed Porta de Martim Moniz (Gate of Martim Moniz).

The question that remains answering is why? Why did the nobles of Portugal wanted independence? Just for the military success of their count? Seems unlikely considering their forefathers had all had military feats of their own and didn’t declare anything. Some historians suggest something that I think is a great answer. The Portuguese weren’t Iberians or celtiberian before roman conquest, they were celts and lusitanian, and after Rome they were mixed with the Suebi, not the visigoths who conquered the suebi kindom much later. After the unification of the peninsula by the visigoths and the islamic conquest, the descendants from suevic nobility were displaced, for the visigoths were in power. Portuguese independence was, for this historians, an attempt to re-separate the suevic kingdom. And that’s a good guess
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 5 жыл бұрын
That’s not a bad idea, Portugal was composed of a collection of different tribes. In my prior series on Hannibal, the research I came across pointed to how the tribes of the Lusitania were fiercely independent. The stories of Hannibal and his father Hamilcar all mention how they had to fight and engage them relentlessly. Perhaps some of that vigor passed down to the Medieval era. The other point is that Portugal never really had a good geographical defensive line - save some mountains in the north and a portion of a river valley system in the south. So how did she maintain her independence so well?
@Tusiriakest
@Tusiriakest 5 жыл бұрын
Flash Point History My answer to that would be a sense of collective identity that was separate from that of the other peoples of the peninsula. Think about it: celtic lusitanian vs iberian; than administratively separate during roman rule; than suebi vs visigoths; then Portugal and Spain. Ever separated made the West of the peninsula feel apart. The Portuguese don’t feel themselves as one of the Iberian countries, they dont even seem to remember that Spain has different countries within, for to the Portuguese, Spain is as alien and as kin as France or Italy. During the fernando’s succession war (aljubarrota) and Napolionic invasions ( with Spain’s help) the plebeians and low nobility always supported the crown. The Castillians were always seen as foreign invadors.( the exception was the Iberian union, for a independent Portugal was promised under the crown union. And even that lasted only until Filipe IV of Spain wanted to annex Portugal, which led to a full rebellion).
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 5 жыл бұрын

And although medieval times aren’t my specialty, the collective identity as a strong political variable in international relations is. Although I usually investigate this regarding the European Union, I think it’s quite explainable of the Portuguese independence as well as the Spain’s unity

Technically yes, they did land in Iberia - but they never had grand designs for the entire peninsula. By their time, Al Andalus was reduced to the state of Granada under the Nasrids. You know for all the wars and battles across the entirety of Europe and the middle east with all the swords, shields, suits of armour, chainmail and many other weapons all being used by thousands and thousands of people over a period of 700yrs. Where are they all???? Theyre not things you melt down unless damaged, theyre unlikely to just be left to rot due to them being defensive and useful even in times of early guns, theyre unlikely to have been thrown away due to their value and purpose. They would have been treasured and passed down through families as relics of the wars that were fought by their ancestors. So why arent there millions upon millions of swords, shields, armour and chainmail being discovered today???? They should be everywhere in everyones families which they arent, theyre only in the hands of a very small few. Its not like many have been dug up either so they were rarely buried with people. Its almost like these events didnt happen anywhere near what we are told. Theres just not enough evidence of all of these battles, wars and constant fighting.

First of, I’d like to say the video is fantastic, I love the style and I very much appreciated the importance you gave Portugal regarding the Reconquista. However, some information seems to be wrong, which is normal considering this part of Portuguese history is hard to find in English. For starters, Henry was of more importance than Raymund, since Henry belonged to the Ducal Bourgognes, whilst Raymund was a descendant of the County holding Bourgognes. Raymund was given a legitimate daughter and Galiza, whilst Henry was given an illegitimate daughter and Portugal. This wasn’t a slight on Henry, as Portugal would be considered better territory for it’s room to grow, and bastards could inherit in the Iberian Peninsula. Second, the plan by the two cousins was a part of a Burgundian plot, initially by Hugo of Clung, later by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, to make the Burgundy dinasty the ruler of western Hispania, and to bring the Roman Rite along with it. Henry’s descendants would get Galiza, Portugal and the western portion of the peninsula, and Raymond’s descendants would get Castille and Leon. Henry was the leader of this Pro-French party, by virtue of his rank. When Alfonso VI’s only son died in battle at Ucles, leaving Raymund’s son through Urraca as heir, is when Alfonso and the Iberian nobles began having second doubts on the French nobles. However, after Raymund dies in 1107, Henry refuses to recognise Urraca as the heiress, bypassing Raymund’s son. For this, he is banished and outlawed from Alfonso VI’s court. After Alfonso VI dies in 1109, his influence grows again, and he aids Afonso of Aragon, Urraca’s new husband, against the moors. However, he soon presses the Pope to excommunicate Urraca and Afonso of Aragon due to their marriage (they were cousins) and until 1112 goes back and forth between supporting Urraca, Afonso of Aragon (they were at war with each other then) and being his own party. He was fighting the king of Aragon near Henry’s new fief of Astorga when he mysteriously dies. His son, Afonso Henriques, is 3 years old, and that’s why Teresa, his mother, assumes regency of the county. Afonso Henriques later has a confrontation with his mother and her lover, for two reasons: she had declared herself Queen, and Afonso VII of Leon did not like that, and she was planning on marrying one of the Trava brothers, which could eventually rule Afonso out of the inheritance. Teresa seems to have been following her late husbands dream, at the expense of her son. Teresa and Henry never declared Portugal independent in 1095, the first record of Henry being in the Peninsula is from 1096. Teresa and her son seem to have come under siege from Afonso VII of Leon in 1127, only surviving because Afonso went to the king of Leon to offer his vassalage instead of his mother. They came into conflict at São Mamede, in 1128, as part of a power struggle, but besides Afonso now ruling the county, relations with Galicia and the Trava’s went back to being good. Also, Teresa’s lover was probably not the count of Galicia yet considering his father was still alive. The proclamation after the battle of Ourique is a myth, he only called himself Infante de Portugal. Lastly, Afonso Henriques was followed by his son Sancho I as king of Portugal, who then was followed by his son, Afonso Henriques’s grandson, Afonso II, as the third king of Portugal, and it was he who sent troops to fight at Las Navas de Tolosa, probably not participating directly due to inheritance problems with his sisters. Regardless, keep up the good work, looking forward to more episodes on Portugal one day.

That was an awesome response! You crack me up - ‘I like your video but these are all the issues . . . Chapter one’ . . . Hahaha. You’re right on a lot of points. First and foremost there are not very many resources on this time period In English. I kind of figured that Henry of burgundy had some degree of significance otherwise he would never have been offered the kings daughter in marriage. The sources that I read, make it out that his cousin was given Galicia first. And that when Alfonso the sixth discovered that there were planning to take over. That’s when he gave Henry governorship over Portugal. The king did this in order to keep them occupied with each other so that they did not attack him. As for the strife between Teresa and her half sister, I was aware of the internal dealings. However, it got so complicated that I figured it would slow down the narrative of the video. So I left it out. Teresa did indeed want to be queen and I even heard that she wanted to be called Empress. It still is impressive that she would be willing to sacrifice her own sons position in order to achieve power. When I created this series I wanted to be able to keep the flow of the narrative moving, so sometimes it’s difficult to go into the details. As for Afonso the II - yes that’s right, he was the grandson - my dialogue got cut off. I meant to say the next king named Afonso. By the way, I looked all over to find out the truth of the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. Was Afonso actually at this fight? I really appreciate your comments. I am really happy that somebody who is so knowledgeable about this time. Find the rest of my video except a bowl and entertaining. Please continue to follow along. My video on Aragon will be coming up soon. All the best!

Flash Point History the earliest known document of Henry of Burgundy in the Peninsula is from 1096, which also confirms his status then as count of Portugal. He was influential because he was the great grandson of Robert II of France, and so related to one of the most important noble families in Western Europe. Considering that most Portuguese sources point to the early 1100s as the time the cousins began plotting (because of the birth of Sancho Alfonses, as I said before) for the inheritance of the Spanish Kingdoms, it is likely that the telenovela like story you found (and which is also taught in primary education here) is a later embellishment, as is most of Afonso Henriques early life. We do know that when Henry fell out with Alfonso VI, he was banished from the court and he ruled Portugal semi independently, which might be where you found some sources claiming Portuguese independence during Henry’s governorship. Later, because of the Hispanic Rite not being dismissive regarding bastards, Teresa wanted to split the kingdoms with her sister, not be left out because of her illegitimacy. It is quite funny that amidst all of these different interests conflicting with each other, Portugal is born. There are some other nuances, mainly regarding the Douro Aristocracy and the Braga/Santiago de Compostela conflict that really gave birth to Portugal, which I can discuss further if you wish. And no, in 1212 Afonso II simply could not participate in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. He had just inherited his kingdom in 1211, was still consolidating royal power, had to deal with civil wars because of his sister, who owned many castles of their own, King Sancho’s bastard sons, and most importantly, king Afonso II was afflicted by leper’s disease, and would have found it very hard to travel and participate in any battle.

Flash Point History also, I was being honest when I said I liked your video, it’s very nice to see Portuguese history being taken seriously and approached, and very few would have taken upon themselves the task of searching about Henry of Burgundy, and just skipped to Afonso Henriques, and so for that you definitely deserve the praise

The Almoravids were not defeated in any battle against the Portuguese and crushed all Portuguese armies in several battles and launched many devastating raids on their lands. In 1111 Almoravides defeated Henry's forces, in May 1117 near Coimbra they defeated Teresa's forces and then sacked it And two battles in 1138 in which the Almoravids defeated the Portuguese in Evora and Santarém They also suffered many defeats against the Almohads

Great video! In Portugal we best know our first king as "Dom Afonso Henriques"; but, as we have a cognomen for all our kings and queens (considering he/she was the sovereign), the one most used for him is "Conquistador" (Conqueror), and the other less used "Fundador" (Founder). It's only too bad the video is somehow short, regarding to the amazing story of the Reconquista on the Portuguese side of the land. From the deserted - not wasted! - land of Gallaecia, to Vímara Peres and Fernando Magno, Portugal indeed begun to be created much before 1139 - Dona Teresa have even signed documents as "Regina" (Queen) of Portugal before Ourique Battle! After Lisbon, the story of the Reconquista in Alentejo and Algarve regions is also very interesting, with wining and losing of castles and territories over and over, as the land became once again vastly deserted - see the stories of Geraldo Sem Pavor (literally "Geraldo the Fearless", for example). Algarve province itself comes from Al Gharb Al Andalus, meaning "Western" Al Andalus, and from the Tagus (Portuguese "Tejo") river region and southwards many villages, towns and cities names come straight from the arabic. Portuguese language itself has hundreds of arabic origin words.

Few innacuracies in this vid (based on what's given in school over here and don't take this the wrong way i've learned a lot and enjoyed this video way more detailed than whats given even in high school): 1 - the battle of São Mamede was in 24th June 1128 not 1124 (Teresa was suspect of trying to merge the houses of portugal and galicia due to her lover why the people flocked to Afonso). 2 - The crusaders were persuaded by the bishop of braga and Afonso Henriques was busy in the south commanding the siege. 3 - Afonso the Conqueror's successor was Sancho I and then it was Afonso II. (Afonso III completed the portuguese reconquista in 1249 a year after succeding Afonso II's son, Sancho II (yes name originality is through the roof during the portuguese Burgundian Dynasty(1143-1383)) And a bit of symbology you might not be aware of (hope it helps your research): 1 - The seven crowns in the portuguese flag represent the supposed seven muslim kings Afonso Henriques defeated at Ourique in 1139 and therefore gain official recognition in the treaty of Zamora (5th October 1143) where its considered the begining of the Portuguese state (just like the 4th of July is to the US) and celebrated as a national holiday but not for that fun enough, the republicans used this date to take over the portuguese monarchy in 1910 and its now known as the Republic Implantation Day. Day of Portugal is in 10th June and it symbolizes the death of the most famous portuguese poet, Luís Vaz de Camões, in 1572 during the latter stages of the descovery period. 2 - Portugal comes from latin Portucale (beautiful harbour) which was the name given to Porto by the romans. 3 - Henriques means son of Henrique (equivalent of Henry in english); He is widely known as the conqueror just like william in a way. Was injured at Badajoz(somwhere in 1160s) trying to expand into the guadiana river valley and permanent gains were up to like Setúbal (some kilometers south of Lisbon and the Tagus (Tejo in portuguese)) 4 - Afonso Henriques was born in Guimarães (near Braga) and for that the city is called the birthplace of Portugal. P.S. I apologize for the long winded comment in advance

Yes! I was looking up research on St James - who was known as Matamoros - and that city kept coming up. It’s just across the border on the Rio Grande if I remember correctly. D. Afonso Henriques was King of Portugal between 1139 and 1185, began the conquests to the Moors by pushing the borders south, from Santarém, Leiria and Alentejo (Badajoz), more than doubling the territory he had inherited. Leaving thus after his death, the legacy of the reconquest to his son Sancho I King of Portugal who continued, expanded, promoted and sponsored the settlement of the country's territories to the south of Portugal in the Algarve. Precursor of the third crusade with the conquest of Torres Novas and Silves in the year 1211.

Why does the narrator keep pronouncing the name "Teresa" as "Tharissa"?! That name exists also in the English-speaking countries either as Teresa or Therese! Is it another case of too close to home, for comfort...?! And another thing: Not once was it mentioned the fact that the Knights Templar (established in Portugal since 1120) were extremely important in the decisive battles against the Moors -- so much so that King Afonso I of Portugal awarded them with huge tracts of land recently recovered back from the invading Moors, making them one of the most powerful and wealthy religious & military orders in Christendom. Or the fact that the Crusaders did stop in Iberia on their way to the Holyland not by chance, but rather by Papal request, in order to help free the Iberian Peninsula of the presence of infidels (to the Christian faith, it goes without saying).

@@FlashPointHx Okay, that's fair. But were you aware of the Templars' contribution to the formation of the Kingdom of Portugal in the early XII century? Oh yeah - I read Joseph O’Callaghan’s ‘Reconquest & Crusade in Medieval Spain’ when I was creating this series. He goes extensively into the Crusade aspect of things - especially into the impact of the Crusading orders. Templars were not the only ones. Hospital arms and the orders of Spain - Calatrava, Santiago, etc all had special places. Indeed when Alphonso I of Aragon died he basically gave the Templars his kingdom. Happy you liked the series

The information regarding the Crusaders from the North does not correspond with my information. The information given here states a later year for the liberation of Lisbon by the Crusaders than I have got. According to my sources the Crusaders from the ocean was nothing but Christian Vikings from Norway who took Lisbon from the Maurs in 1010! They conquered not only Lisbon but also Sintra and Alcaser do Sal! The deal with the King of Portugal was that they got to keep the loot but handed over the cities to the Portuguese King with they did. They did not sail in medieval ships as portrayed here in this presentation. They had old fashioned Longships the old fashion Vikingship you can find displayed in the Bayeux tapestry or see in real in Oslo. The fleet consisted of 100 Longships with 60 men in each so for it's time it was a formidable force and it did help Portugal, though the figures here is a little imprecise! Thanks!

The vikings did raid Spain at several different times. There is even a famous event in 844 when they sacked Seville. Along the way they raided the Cantabrian coast and did hit Lisbon and Porto etc. Afterwards some of them made it to southern France as well. By 1147 for the taking of Lisbon by Afonso I and his coalition of crusaders is pretty well documented in a variety of sources.

@@FlashPointHx but this is from the Saga of Sigurd Jorsalfare. He was a Christian king and they left Bergen in 1108 with 100 Longships in the autumn and stayed in Britain over the winter before they sailed on to North of Spain near Santiago del Compostella. Though they were so called Christian they were still Vikings and were feared fighters. In the Saga it's said and claimed they took Lisbon and then handed it over to the Portuguese king. I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me because this story is immense. Their following journey went through the straights of Gibraltar where they fought of muslim pirates who took them for merchants! None of the pirates were said to survive! Their further voyage went to Palermo in Sicily where they enjoyed the spoiles taken in Portugal. Further on they sailed to Jaffa in Palestine and together with the french Crusader force in Jerusalem took Tyre! They did it the way the did it when they took Lisbon. The French Crusader army laid siege to Tyr and thus took the attention away from the seaside which then lay open for the Viking force to attack from the sea side! This can be documented as well as the long stay in Scicily by the Viking force! In light of this I urge you to seek out King Sigurd and his Crusade! Cheers en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigurd_the_Crusader

Each area had a regional dialect or language. Hebrew, Arabic, Castilian, Portuguese, Basque, and Latin were some of the main languages. Of these, Castilian would become Spanish as Latin would be replaced by more secular vernacular

I'm so happy that you liked the video! The language came from a combination of the indigenous peoples of Galicia and the county of Porto along with some Celtic roots as well. They spread this to the south during the reconquest and then to the new world in South America when Spain and Portugal were the two major world powers. Spanish is derived from the speech of Castile - again spread all over the world after the Reconquista.
