Being able to play and record a piece of music on this guitar was especially cool. It's one of (if not the) very first electric guitar Yamaha ever built! The first prototype from 1965 when they were thinking of getting into the electric guitar market.
It spends its life sitting in a guitar case these days and it was a rather hot in front of those warehouse windows, so it took a bit of wrestling to keep it (and me) in tune at times, but I think it was worth it. Hope you enjoy.
I'm quite proud of these little ideas. They aren't the greatest things I've ever written or the best examples of my playing but I'm quite proud of myself for being able to record the bass, rhythm and lead guitars parts for the six short tracks in about a day and a half. All with severe jet lag and a pretty bad cold!
Steve Geer as always did a great job of the filming and it was a pleasure to search through his footage and edit these little pieces together.
All recorded with a Line 6 Sonicport VX into Steinberg Cubase running Helix Native. Technology can be pretty awesome.
Hope you enjoy.
From the Yamaha page
"Join Paul Hindmarsh Music as he explores the vast collection of rare and prototype instruments at the Yamaha Guitar Archive in Hamamatsu, Japan. Paul composed six short pieces as a musical tour of Yamaha’s unique guitar history.
For this piece, Paul had the chance to play the first Yamaha prototype electric guitar - the GSX33B from 1965, which would evolve into the offset SG series in 1966. “I was really looking forward to doing something with this old guitar,” said Paul. “I feel like it was very special to have the chance to record with this little bit of history.”
For the bass part, a 2000 Custom BB featuring active electronics and a vintage-style pickup cover over the clear scratch plate provided a tight bottom end and looked great.
For the rhythm, Paul’s go-to Pacifica was an obvious choice for the second guitar part.
Paul recorded into Cubase recording software from Steinberg, using the Line 6 Sonic Port VX interface and Helix Native plugin".
