My theory for why the series got so dark: at first Pierce Brown was a nice fellow wanting to right an epic sci fi story but one where you also loose some people you love cuz otherwise it'd be kinda lame. Then slowly he realized the tears of his readers are really delicious so he made the books darker and darker and now wants to dethrone and usurpe our Dark Lord Joe Abercrombie

He's also got Paradice Lost in there, lol. I was listening to a speech by a bad guy, and it was a a legitimate rendition of Satan's address to the fallen angels in Paradice lost. I thought that was so cool how he leaves little easter eggs like that

Same here! Thanks mike. Read these because of you in 2020 and it’s sooo good. The action, the characters, the plot, the politics, betrayals, it’s a really intense series. Sequel trilogy is darker as mentioned, but if you’re like me who likes dark serious moments/ sh** hitting the fan you’ll be ok.

One of the most epic book series I've ever read. Gripping & intense, while breaking through barriers of social classes that seem to reflect the direction of life today. Must be noted, Darrow was nothing without his friends & the people in his life who helped him, through those friendships he showed his own strength & determination. I love how many characters Pierce Brown brings in to the story & how many different story lines are going on. He greatly expanded the magnitude of the story as it went along. Though, I hate that Ragnor had such a short appearance, but Pierce made up for it with Cassius. No joke, I had tears of joy in Dark Age.

I remember reading Red Rising back when the hype around it was it's biggest. And I found it weird, because to me it read as an Adult Hunger Games and I couldn't get past that aspect... I'm thinking now that it's been a few year that I may check it out from my library again and give it another go. I did enjoy Pierce Brown's writing and storytelling, so it may be worth it to push through and try to finish up the first trilogy.

Side note: One of my internet friends actually got into the series recently because he'd seen me talking about having read the first book. I think I've read the first trilogy in about three weeks time, absolutely devoured it. 4 and 5 I definitely needed a couple breaks. I was just so emotionally invested, there were points in the story where it got so tense I actually had to lay the book aside and clear my head. It's so action packed, with the single POV you're slowly preparing for big moments it feels like but with the multiple POV you can never catch a break haha, theres always something going on, lots of crazy stuff. I definitely prefer the second series (cant really call it a trilogy anymore since he announced TWO more books, yay). I thought a certain part of book 2 was the worst Pierce Brown could ever make me feel but my god Dark Age is something else man. Can't wait til May!

My friend recommended me this series. I enjoyed the premise while hating the main character. 5 years later I decided to give it another chance and a realization struck me. This is the origin story of a villain. Darrow is a villain in the making. The sequels are looking to prove me right.

I don’t think he was a Mary sue. He was built to be the best by the powers that be…. BUT. He’s constantly found out if his element. He’s never the smartest man in the room. In the first two books, He’s 100% learning all the time and realizing he’s got a lot to figure out about his opponents. In the third book he leans on his people so hard for great ideas. It’s incredible

I decided to read this series based on your "why you should read it" video. Thanks for the recommendation, because I really like this series alot. I even liked book 1. If I had to choose something to put in the bad category, I felt like the original three books was a very solid trilogy where everything was wrapped up nicely for me. I didn't need to series to go on. But there was no way I could ignore books 5 and 6. In Iron Gold, I did not like that we moved to a four person POV story. I liked it all coming from Darrow. Regardless, the only characters I did not connect with in Iron Gold was Ephraim. Still, a very solid book. In Dark Age, I felt it was a bit long, but there was some very good story told there, especially Victra. Man, did she shine. Her parts were fantastic to read. Dark Age made my top 10 last year. That being said, I can't wait to read book 6.

The sequels are certainly divisive. I appreciated the multi-POV choice. Made the universe feel bigger. But I get it when others didn't.

I only read fantasy but this will definitely be on my reading list for next year (so many books for this year no way I can fit it in 😂) this really sounds like my sort of series.

I read the first 3 books last year. I plan to read the last 3 books as soon as the 6th one is published. I think I also needed a little break from the series because the books are so intense! I'm not really a fan of grim dark but I definitely need to know how this series ends.

100% Agree with the whole thing, there were some parts where it was frustrating he didn't reveal some of the stuff beforehand, but I always saw it as a device to keep the interest and action going. The first one was definitely slower paced and was alot like the hunger games, but I'm neutral on it. The strategy in the whole book series was phenomenal and the second and third were so fast paced that I couldn't put them down. I finished the first book in like a week but read the second and the third in two days flat. I'm waiting on the third one in the second trilogy series to come out to start back up again, if they're as fast paced as the last two, I'm not going to want to wait hahaha. I'd honestly love a prequel trilogy if he did that as well!!! Last thing I will say is that it's definitely not a prose style book series, but it's better prose than Hemingway's jarring style that was often slow paced when I read for whom the bell tolls, literally could not read it, but also not John Steinbeck where he spent wayyy too long describing stuff.

The Red Rising series is one of my all-time favorites. I've read the first three books three times. Sevro is probably in my top-five favorite characters from any genre. I'd love to see a TV adaptation by HBO or someone with a lot of money. However, books four and five are probably too dark. There are some scenes that I think are unfilmable.

Trying my best to avoid spoilers, but I just finished Morningstar on audiobook. Near the end I lost my shit and hated a character that I was starting to like. Then just before the very end there's a moment in the bunker where I stopped the audio and just said, "wow...holy sh*t" because of how savage it was and other characters felt the shock of the savagery. Couldn't agree more about how awesome razors are. I love this first trilogy and cannot wait to start Iron Gold. Thanks for bringing this series out into to the spotlight, at least for me. It is slightly concerning if the 2nd trilogy is getting darker to the level you describe, but I can't stop now.

This is one series that I was excited about, but over time lost interest a little. Just other things I wanted to read more than this series kept pushing it back. You've rejuvenated my excitement though, and this may be the sci-fi series I try this year! Red Rising or Empire of Silence though? Tough choice!
