In Korea during the first half of the 1700s, Yi San (Lee Junho) is an aloof and perfection-loving young prince. His father’s killing haunts him, although it leaves him in the position to take the throne once his grandfather - the cruel and ruthless current king responsible for Yi San’s father’s death - dies. He has resolved to become a benevolent monarch who will reform the law when he eventually takes the throne, but the way his father was killed has scarred him emotionally.
At court, he meets a young woman named Sung Deok Im (Lee Se Young). Yi San falls in love with her and tries to convince her to become his official concubine. But Sung Deok Im is strong-willed and free-spirited. She is also intelligent enough to understand that becoming a royal consort to the future king is a prestigious role, but one that would restrict her freedom and likely bring her little in the way of joy. But Yi San’s love for Sung Deok Im is true, and she starts to understand that forming a union with him could ultimately benefit his troubled realm.
This drama series was based on a 2017 novel by Kang Mi Gang.
“The Red Sleeve” is a 2021 South Korean drama series that was directed by Jung Ji In.

how I cried oceans at this scene, how I cried that finally after years. it was sad though, you see, she had to give up a part of her life to have another part of her life, it was heart breaking. but it'd have been more heart breaking had she not allowed him this time. I can't, this scene was so perfectly executed. the music, the acting, the eyes, the hands, the touch.

He is bound by rules and tradition just as surely as she is. He cannot continue to have a relationship to her if she does not become a concubine especially now because he is emperor. All along for what, a period of nine years, because he loves her he has taken a very different approach than the traditional approach. It is not, I will love you no matter the consequences, if he is going to be the good Emperor that he vowed to be, he too is ruled by tradition and it is only she whom he loves. He does not bully her; he maps out the reality. They cannot be together if she does not become his concubine. I don't think by tradition and law at that time, he could just change everything. I found this scene very touching. The reality is that he did not need her permission for him to have intimate relations with her. He is putting before her a real choice. In order to continue to be with him, she has to become a concubine or never see him again. It is the voice of tradition that is equally harsh on him. They are both victims of the system that is in place. Her love runs as deeply as his. The tragedy is that he is unsure of her love because (in modern terms) they have different love languages.

If we are being honest, San’s love was a bit selfish but that came from the place of wanting to protect her. Deok Im was literally bullied into becoming a concubine. I love how San loves Deok Im but it’s unfortunate that Deok Im had to give up her life for that love.

Women didn't have too much choice in those days. Without a doubt, today's woman (and even women of those times) will find the life of a concubine unfair and suffocating. But what was the future of women in those days who didn't marry or leave the services of the king? Are you a court maid for life? We all love independence but at some point don't you have to grow up - what would her life have looked like if she had agreed to not see him all her life? Obviously, she thought this was a better choice. Unfair but apparently she chose the lesser of 2 evils. The sad thing is how it ended for her...Would have been nice if she had been mother to the next King like Dong Yi.

Yes exactly. I mean they did love each other but in this love he wouldn't have to give up on anything as he is the king instead she'll have to give up her whole life her friends her freedom. I mean she wouldn't be able to even put a step outside the palace, I mean how suffocating would that be. She'll have to restrain herself from her funny and free spirited nature. I dont know or rather I wont be able to give up my whole life myself for a relationship. He said he wanted to be family with her but while doing that he is asking her to give up the people and those things that has been with her from her birth! But sometimes I also do think how he did ask her if she really wanted to be with him and she knew what she would have to give up but she still accepted him .

@@disappearintothesea Truth is, as she said on episode 17, she made the choice to stay by his side. For a long time she chose to remain as a court lady, and openly told him so-repeatedly. Even during *this* moment, he asked her again, when Queen Dowager told him he could be selfish because he is King. On episode 17 she told him to pass her by as if he doesn’t know her in their next life, to live the life she wanted. I am glad she chose at the end to stay by his side. She didn’t live long, she died at the age of 33. They got to spend time together, and he let history know the only women he ever loved was Deok Im.

I have a doubt here. How is Deok Im's plight different from Dong Yi's? Dong Yi was also an independent woman but she seemed to adjust better to becoming a concubine and she helped the king in politics and had an active life. I know most women wouldn't have been able to do things actively but couldn't Deok Im also participate in politics (from the side) and still lead an independent life? And then after giving birth to the next king Dong Yi moved out of the palace. Didn't Deok Im have to?

Well, the other option would be to have no relationship with her whatsoever, so it was kind of a lose/lose situation. There's a reason as to why San is (even for a tiny instance) apologetic to Deok Im when he realized that making her his concubine instead of bringing happiness only made her leave him sooner and had his heart broken for the rest of his life. Life in the palace was for the most part a suffocating prison with nice clothing and beautiful scenery... the reality is that Deok Im completely lost herself and her will to live even if she deeply loved San plus add the tragedies of losing her little son and best friend. San loved her in a passionate but selfish way and even after many years he refused to understand how much harm he caused her for his love.

@@piedpiper1234 Loving someone doesn't equal being happy in a certain situation/relationship. Deok Im loved San (a man who was for the most part gentle and wise despite his abusive upbringing) she was not interested in being a pawn for the royal family, she didn't want to be concubine whose only activity was to wait countless of hours doing absolutely nothing until the king's visit. Deok Im cherished San but her whole life didn't revolved around him. She loved her friends, her brother, she loved calligraph and appreciated her job. You could see how much she loved making her own choices for small as they were she wanted a simply but free life. Being concubine was just a embellished title to describe for the most part a prisoner cause even if San loved her he will never put her first (The nation, the Queen etc all came first for the King cause that was the role he had to fullfill) yet everyone expected Deok Im to drop anything that she hold dear for San. It was not an equal situation and you could see how emotionally affected Deok Im was years later, she was bubbly and joyful person when she was working as court lady contrary to how depressed and suppressed she was as a royal consort.
