And Walman and Ghost are absolutely upgrades over any defensemen on the Wings that aren’t Seider or Edvinsson. You can’t shed talent as a team that missed the playoffs, and expect to get better. The issue isn’t that guys like Ghost, Sprong, and Walman are amazing players who can’t be upgraded at all, the issue is that those 3 are all competent NHL players who Yzerman let walk or traded with no upgrade at all.

Asides from Edvidsson and Seider, 2/3 of Detroit's defense is absolute trash. Yzerman is to blame for that. Detroit has no defense prospects, other than ASP who's a year a way to graduate to Detroit. Yzerman has a lot of fixing to do. Yzerman has done a good job only on his 1st round draft picks so far as well as his contract negotiations with Larkin, Raymond and Seider. Everything else is mediocre at best, which isn't very good. Seider, Raymond, Buchelnikov, Edvidsson, Cossa, Mazur, Kasper, Lombardi, Danielson, ASP, Augustine, Finnie, Kiiskinen, MBN, maybe a few others look to be NHLers, if they all hit. Your looking at 2026-2027 for most of those to become full-time Red Wings players. That's 2 years plus from now. Detroit has been screwed in the draft, which isn't their fault. It looks like Detroit will be out of the playoffs by the trade deadline unless something drastically happens. Draft picks and future considerations only. Talbot being the lone exclusion, you farm goaltending yourself, don't pick up based on another teams records for that player. For fans who understand other Detroit sports teams, Steve Yzerman and Derek Lalonde are Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia 2.0. Yzerman and Quinn both came from successful organizations and tried to build their teams in the mold of those franchises. Both GMs first coaching hire was an assistant coach from their old teams where it was their first NHL/NFL head coaching job. Lalonde and Patricia never adapt the way they want their teams to play with the personal they have. Both GMs traded/ let walk perceived head cases who they didn’t want to deal with or didn’t comply with the culture they wanted to have. Jake Walman, Jakub Vrana, Quandre Diggs (former Lions safety), and Darias Slay (former Lions cornerback) are prime examples. Both GMs made questionable decisions beyond the first round of their drafts. Brady Cleveland in the second round in 2023 is still head scratching. Jahlani Tavai at 43rd overall in 2019 was also a head scratcher for the Lions. In general, both GMs are failures in their drafts after the 1st round. Name one successful non first round pick for either GM if you don’t believe me. Bottom line, fire everyone! The path the Red Wings are on is to nowhere and they need to change course with a fresh set of eyes in the front office and behind the bench (preferably someone who has never been with the organization) before they potentially lose a generation of fans.

We're seeing fans want Lyon and Talbot to take blame, but it really all comes down to the Defensive play and simply not spending enough time on offense. Holl is useless. He's too big and slow even for the AHL. Kane looks to be coasting. Larkin is the only one with any passion every night. Seider is amazing on D and whatnot, but he almost never shoots or scores. Chiarot and Petry seem mediocre at best, but often fall short for NHL play. Raymond and Debrincat, despite having higher points on the team, aren't scoring enough. When I watch Colorado, their speed is insane and you know McKinnon and Makar will put on a show. When I watch Edmonton, McDavid and Draisaitl are insane spectacles. I know this sucks, and I don’t even watch the team most nights because it just gives me unnecessary anger, but I am trying my best to look at the light at the end of the tunnel. We weren’t going to compete for anything this year regardless so instead of being middle of the pack, getting a good draft choice is small light, and if that draft choice is great in a few years we will look at this as a blessing in disguise, or we could still suck and all collectively jump off a bridge.

I feel like we gave up on players to quickly during the rebuild look at varna having ok season in Washington and he’s only making 900k are 3rd line is making 10ish mill or a little over that and in my opinion varna is playing way better just shows if we gave him his time he find his game also wish we never got rid of Ned or Troy stecher

So when should have Yzerman picked that number one Star? 4th overall, 6th, 8th? This rebuild was absolutely screwed by the draft lottery. How is a team supposed to compete without a top 3 pick? Especially when you look at teams like NJ, Buffalo, Edmonton, Chicago, who's been gifted multiple top 3 picks in their respective rebuilds. Where i think Yzerman has done poorly is in his Pro Scouting. The free agents he's signed over the last few seasons have been bad, especially on defense. Not sure where this goes from here, but i think at the very least its time for a new head coach.

Winnipeg picked higher than 7th once, and that player ended up being gone for not a lot of return.

I would have been stoked if the Avs gave up a 4th and got Walman back. Him on the third paring with Malinski would be unreal and he could move up and down that lineup.

What baffles me is how badly the pro scouting has been. They're have been just about no wins for them. The drafting seems to be fine but becuase they're so many bad contracts they young guns can make the team.
@europason22932 ай бұрын
I'm ready to embrace the tank. We should have tanked for the 2023 draft. The rebuild would be in a substantially better position had we drafted one of Bedard, Carlson, Fantilli or Michkov, but instead Yzerman made moves in the 2022 FA to make the team more competitive and avoid developing a losing culture. I understand the mentality, however, it's handicapped the long-term outlook of the rebuild. The top 3 of the 2025 draft are potentially worth tanking for. We're approaching the point in the season where making a run for a playoff spot is next to impossible, so may as well try and bottom out just one last year and secure a high draft pick.

So our strategy to win is make sure we get lots of power plays. That’s a recipe for disaster.

To get the first draft pick, you have to win a lottery, and Bettman will never let that happen as long as there are the Penguins and the Sabres of the world.

I don’t think getting cheap options at D and goalie, that teams don’t want, ie: Chiarot, Petry, Lyon, Talbot (although he’s been the best goalie for the wings) is the answer. Bring up the young guys and let them play…. Cossa and Augustine could be a hell of a tandem and I think people are getting impatient, is it crazy to say bring up the young and out with the old?
@Fenrirmaster302 ай бұрын
Glad to see even though Detroit is in a different conference, the Chicago, Detroit rivalry is still going hard. Don't think for a second the Wings can out underperform us though! Richardson will throw 4th liners on the top line with Bedard all day to ensure we prevail in our tanking!

I'm not going to thrown my opinion in per say but I would like to know, how long is the leash on Yzerman? Where is the line?

Everyone in pro scouting for the wings should honestly be fired in management. Like they genuinely never pick the right guys to get and when they do they give up on them.(walman, ghost etc.)
@slashouse2 ай бұрын
Keep in mind that those terrible contracts have NMC and NTC. So unless Chiarot, Petry and Copp are willing to waive them, they'll stay in the main roster
@rexxthevaliant2 ай бұрын
If I watch another wings game where they avoid the defense at the offensive blue line by dumping and chasing, I am going to lose my mind. I saw it no less than half a dozen times where they outnumbered the defense last game and dumped the puck to make nothing of the play.

I’m not a wings fan but man that sucks for the wings fan. Yzerman started very well, good asset management and good draft , but since last year he really fumbled all his plan, maybe the owner that puts pressure on him, but even that all those moves were bad at the time and still are
@Bassandbackroads2 ай бұрын
As a red wings fan I feel like yzerman is focusing too much on offense and not enough on goaltending which is where we’ve struggled most for years. We failed to acquire any still good goalies out of free agency. It’s definitely gonna be interesting when Augustine and Cossa are starter and backup

Remember that the Wings had less regulation wins last year than the Coyotes. Their OT wins masked how bad they were.

I truly believe Lalonde should be fired. The team is worse than it should be. On paper the def behind the first line ok ya it’s not that good. But it’s better than it has been showing. Just in wrong positions. Petry should never be on the second line and Johansson should never be benched. He played right side of edvisson in ahl all year last year. Put him on the right side instead of petry and let him make mistakes and grow. Let him move the puck in the offensive zone instead of slow chariot. As for ghost. It’s possible that he didn’t want to resign in Detroit. He was shat on all last year by Detroit fans it’s possible he wanted a change. Walman I think something was going on but we will never no. Those moves could very well been cap moves to try to get trouba which fell apart.

Are there any decent defensemen in the pipeline other than Axel? One bright spot is we do have 3 young guys on the roster playing their first full NHL season and 24 year old Berggren looking pretty good. Bring up Elmer! If we are going to loose at least we can have fun watching Elmer play.

I'm still with the Yzerplan considering we're still waiting for the younger players to come up. However, I do think we'll see a coaching change. Yzerman needs to find a way to trade half of the defense.

As a San Jose fan I'm starting to get worried for y'all, Yzerman looks mediocre as a GM and the defense looks as thin as ours. Thank you for Walman by the way. Hope y'all get something good going soon

Red Wings should prolly just tank the season and hope to land high pick. Team lacks high end talent on the roster and on the prospect pool. They aren't winning anything ever with this core. Year 6 of the rebuild and they are fielding one of the oldest rosters in Nhl. That's just sad. Yzerman signing mediocre talent in free agency has been the biggest mistake in the whole rebuild. Copp, Chiarot, Petry, Holl, Gustafsson... They all suck so bad and should be playing in ahl. Rather overpay for talent than sign punch of old crap.
@saschaganser96712 ай бұрын
Great vid again! Lot of wings fans blame the coach, and not without a reason. But i see a lot of flaws in this team and the way it`s build. I would fire Yzerman. Too many of his moves have not worked out. Last year was a lucky season, but DET wasn`t that good. They are missing key pieces, right now they have 2 young Ds (Seider, Edv.) and not enough talent upfront. Raymond, Larkin, Debrincat - maybe Kasper. There`s simply not enough high end talent in the system yet. Signing those vets to longer, overpaid contracts was to early. Compher, Copp, Chiarot, Holl, now Tarasenko - 25m cap. None of these contracts is good. Trading Walman with an asset - i have no idea what happened, but why? Right now, the Wings are bad, but too good to run for 1st overall. They don`t have any D in his prime, between age 23 and 32. They are a build bubble out team at best. On top, there are no assets. Usually you try to add players like Ceci brought a 3rd rounder), retain 50% at the deadline and ship him out for another pick. Same with Walman. Compher and Copp look like buyout canidates. Yzerplan might have done DET dirty, as they might become to good due to the talent already acquired, but not good enough to really make a push and become relevant. See how hard it is for Buffalo, or the Sens.

we have been screwed in all the drafts we should have been taking advantage of. They never really got the next superstar to build a new dynasty around, and now they have a bunch of mid tier talent with a shit coach, and an empty piggy bank.

@senseofjustice02182 ай бұрын
There's definitely some issues with the defense but the biggest thing to me is Lalonde NEEDS to go. His game plans aren't producing and his roster combinations are mind boggling. Him putting Chiarot with Seider as long as he djd before should have at least gotten firing considerations for how it dragged on Seider's development.
@zachhanchett75922 ай бұрын
I thought for sure you were gonna say the question of coaching change. Someone who not only has experience but someone who’s not going to allow his team to be beat by one of the worst teams in the league after being up 3-1. This team is not playing for him period.
@andyduncan10392 ай бұрын
This team is so frustrating to watch. They rarely skate the puck into the zone, unless they’re on a power-play, dump it in all the time and try to forecheck and get it which doesn’t happen and wonder why they can’t put any shots on net. Can someone take the fing shot on net instead of passing it all the time. Time for Gerard Gallant.
