I have had sleeping problems for many years so I find this very interesting. The ironic thing is that I had a checkup last Fall and was told I do not have dementia. I was concerned because it seemed I was starting to forget things more. Yet my mother had dementia and slept very well. She never had problems getting enough sleep all her life. I suppose there are other reasons to get dementia besides sleep deprivation. I really like Dr. Walkers ideas about sleep and have been watching a lot of his videos lately. I really hope to improve my sleep.

This DID scare the crap out of me. I’m 84 and haven’t had a proper night’s sleep for many years. The change in sleep pattern started after menopause. I’m happy if I get 4 uninterrupted hours. And I nap (or pass out) during the day….it could be 5 minutes or 1 hour. I’ve tried dark (black) room, getting off the screen 2 hrs before bedtime, taking melatonin. I don’t get enough exercise….I have mobility issues. I’m not overweight. I know I shouldn’t eat before going to bed and yet I always want to sleep after eating. My blood sugar is good. 🤷♀️

I've tried every medication and none of them work. Like taking a placebo. I also am lucky to get 4hrs uninterrupted sleep and on average have 2-3 nights a month where I don't sleep at all. But unlike you I almost never can take a nap, maybe once every 2 months. I know it's killing me because of how badly it makes me feel. I wouldn't wish chronic insomnia on my worst enemy. I've even considered suicide. I try to stay hopeful.

@@jizim8947 I understand. I’m planning on seeing a naturopath to see what she might suggest. Something I’ve been told many times over the years is that I must meditate. Let’s say I’m less than consistent. (Understatement!) Hold on, friend. I firmly believe there are answers out there. We just haven’t found them yet.

@@jizim8947 what happens if you force yourself to stay up until you’re very tired? Do you still only get 4 hours of sleep?

Absolutely fascinating! Thank you for dumbing this down well enough that those of us who are not "science-inclined" can understand it.

In my thirties it was challenging to get a good night sleep. That changed now that my kids are grown and I have control over my workload

Do short naps during the day help with the lack of a full 6 hours of sleep in the night?

I am not sure those Amyloids are toxic... But I do agree that sleep is a very VERY important part of Alzheimer's prevention in midlife!

If you had interrupted sleep as a child by others, that may play into life long issues along with stress and anxiety. Just a thought. Calming the nervous system, sans medication, by direct sunlight into eyes daily for a few seconds I read, helps create more serotonin and can potentially reset circadian rhythms and calm stress and anxiety by the reset, thus much better sleep. Since on and off for the past 2 weeks, I have tried it and am seeing positive results.

I'm 39. My sleep quality has decreased quite a bit over the past 4-5 years. I used to sleep 8+ hours and rarely wake up in the middle of the night. Now, I pretty much always wake up in the middle of the night at least once. :|

Waking up isn't an issue. Not being able to fall asleep again would be..

Lack of sleep will also lower testosterone because your liver repairs while you sleep and an unhealthy liver can’t regulate hormones amongst other things.

Try cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. It works. Basically you will restrict your sleep to only a 5 hour window, example: Go to bed at midnight and wake up at 5am regardless of how long you slept. Also, if you stay awake for longer than 20 minutes, get out of bed. By the 3rd night, if you haven't gotten much sleep you'll be so exhausted you will sleep
