Malcolm McDowell is a legend! He'll take on any role, no matter how daring or crazy the movie (ACO, Caligula, If..., O, Lucky Man!, The Passage, just to name a few) and always give an awesome performance. And even if the movie is far from great, he's always incredible. Hell, he was even good in Silent Hill: Revelation and that movie is barely watchable!

And Caligula is without question one of the most unique films in movie history! A true one-of-a-kind classic! When it opens with him reading the speech declaring him a god, you know you're in for something. It's one of those rare movies that somehow transcends the criteria of "good" and/or "bad" and goes beyond into it's own realm and the story of it's production is legendary.

- 'I, Claudius' was over 10 hours long and done on a micro budget compared to McDowell's Caligula, the actors made it work. Derek Jacobi and a huge cast of old pros were astounding but John Hurt owned every scene he was in. Malcolm was a bit of a ham sometimes but his Clockwork Alex was good prep for the role.

Europeans that come from the Balkan areas and southern Europe tend to have mote of a tan and black hair a brown eyes. Plus Rome wasn't just all Italian people, in fact you can't exactly really call them Italian either then as Rome was settled by the Greeks and Etruscans, plus Roman wasn't a race, it was just a nationality, any anyone could be Roman if they lived in the Roman Republic or Empire, Rome was pretty diverse for its time due to how many lands they had conquered. Also the Roman statues were specifically designed to reflect how a person really looked, so they'd include wrinkles, any warts or any noticeable pimples, etc. Nero is recognizable bc his statues has a neckbeard and he has a slight double chin.

Back when the movie was released, I recall reading that many of the principal scenes were shot by Tinto Brass; then - separately - Bob Guccione Jr shot additional "supporting" footage (i.e. the pornographic scenes) a bit later. The porn scenes were edited into the principal photography, so that the final, released version of the film was far worse than anything the stars thought they were working on. (Allegedly, a few of the stars attempted to have their scenes removed from the movie, but that went nowhere.)

Fun Fact:the Imperial Family of Japan were considered living gods up until the end of World War II (a conflict in which they, like Mussolini, allied with the Nazis and ended up losing) and there are still a few other political leaders (most notably the Dalai Lama) who are considered living gods. Why didn't we get more information on the boat portion used as a coffee table? It was a whole 2 mins of an 11 minute video that would have been more entertaining than learning what's already well known about Caligula.

In Dallas back in the day there was a strip club named Caligula. There was a politician and like illegal mob bosses wrapped up in its runnings. One night it mysteriously caught on fire. The firemen "took their time" to get there, and the entire thing burned to the ground. Fitting for it's namesake, I think. I rode past that area the other day and you'd have no idea it ever existed if you weren't born and raised here.

I Claudius after Tiberius has found out about an attempt to assassinate him and he has completely lost his marbles and decides his perfect choice for the next emperor, Caligula. Tiberius : "You will be my successor!" Caligula: "Is this a joke Uncle?" Tiberius : "Not yet, but it will be." Caligula: “I...I don't know what to say." Tiberius: “There's no need to say anything my boy... ROME DESERVES YOU!!!." I always remember that scene from I Claudius.

Bacchus is just the name the Roman's adopted for dionysus. It's basically the same cult and the same god. The Roman's even had their own more indigenous god of wine, parties and freedom known as Libre. The cult of the wine god has protoindoeuropean roots. Wine and human history kinda go hand in hand

Two Roman emperors Caligula and Caracalla are today not known by their real names but by their nicknames based on items of clothing that they wore as children -Caligula because of the little boots he wore as a child and Caracalla because of the type of cloak that he wore.Fastforward about 200 years from now and imagine that Prince Charles of the U.K. will not be known by his real name (perhaps Charles III but a nickname based on clothes he wore as a child perhaps "Jodphurs" -these are trousers worn when playing polo a game Prince Charles loves.Would be hilarious!
