Less than two years ago, West Ham United were mired in the Premier League relegation zone, with fans protesting their owners at every game, and David Moyes having been asked to come back to the club in place of Manuel Pellegrini.
Now, with a team boasting the likes of Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen, and Michail Antonio, the Hammers are competing for a Champions League place, whilst flourishing in the Europa League and Carabao Cup.
So in this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a deep dive into the rise of West Ham, under the unpopular GSB regime, the reasons behind it, and what the future may hold for the club.

As a West Ham fan it feels bizarre going into every game believing we can win. We don’t necessarily have the best individuals but we have one of the best teams.

And that’s what moyes does better than almost anyone. “Greater than the sum of its parts” is a phrase that’s perfect for teams built by moyes (when allowed to do what he is best at) everton fan here btw

I think saying we don’t have the best individuals is very miss leading, Benrahma has been one of the most creative players this season soucek and rice are two of the best holding midfielders in prem areola and fab both amazing shot stoppers and Bowen has been unbelievable as a team we are amazing but also have individuals who are unreal

@@alexyoung9775 Its only missleading to some degree. Guys like Soucek and Coufal are massive bums but the reason why they thrive is partly thanks to the system that they are in and partly thanks to their own drive and self awareness. Soucek technically pretty awful and can be somewhat clumsy. What seperates him from these nobodies like Mctominay is his special awareness and the fact that he is breaking records week in week out for distance covered. Gotta keep in mind these guys came through the academies and played their whole career in czech league so obviously their footballing ability will be limited compared to players coming through in England or Germany.

David Moyes was the only one who believed in David Moyes. We referred to his first interview back where he quoted himself saying, "Winning, it's what I do" as a joke from a comedian, labelling him a dinosaur. He's been our best manager since John Lyall and can hopefully match or better him. We should not be worthy but I am so glad with what we've been blessed with 🙏🏾

No he wasn't, plenty of Hammers fans could see how much better we were during his first stint, and wanted him to stay to continue the work. Sadly too many were blind to how badly Bilic had let the teams fitness drop and expected instant results and brazilian football. They competely ignored that, in the 6 months under Moyes, we went from the team that ran the least to the team that ran the most; a team that didn't give a shit, to a team that fought for each other. Would've probably been hounded out a second time if the corona break hadn't given him a few months to work on the fitness Pellegrini had let slide, and the attitude of the squad.

Moyes has built a team that is capable of resisting the ups and downs and delivering regardless of what's going on off the pitch. To achieve that, he's got a brain trust of backroom staff, a selective transfer policy and near total control of the day to day compared to the previous seasons of GSB putting their hand in the soup thinking they're chefs. In Moyes we trust.

As a West Ham supporter who has been attending matches since 1972, many times in the past, if we had gone a goal down then the team’s heads would have dropped and we’d have limply lost. Under Moyes, I no longer have that feeling as I know that the team will fight back. Take the match last night against Genk and also recently against Leeds, I just knew that the team would fight back and get a result. Give Moyes time and I reckon he will be our most successful manager since the days of John Lyall. Furthermore, I feel very proud about having Moyes as our manager. He is a humble, modest and likeable chap who volunteered to deliver food parcels to the vulnerable during last year’s lockdown. How many other managers would have done that?

100% this. I’ve been attending matches since 1979, and it’s odd - that feeling of knowing going behind isn’t game over. Even yesterday - past teams would have lost after Liverpool equalised. This ‘new’ West Ham seemed to take offence at them scoring and it pushed them onto to playing better. It truly is a remarkable time to be a West Ham fan - even if those old feeling of ‘when is this all going to unravel’ are hard to get rid of COYI ⚒

As an Everton fan who was somewhat melancholy to see him I see David Moyes as a changed man. What happened to him at Utd, Sunderland and Socidad gave him lessons in failure and consequence that he never had at Everton. His time away from the game between those jobs also gave him the space to reassess his work in a way you simply cannot while in a job. The David Moyes of today is a manager who can actually beat the big teams when away from home (something he never did at Everton) and a manager who I think has what it takes to now go all the way and win a trophy. I think the availability of funds alongside his tried and tested scouting methods have also been a boon. Too many times at Everton we saw him lose out on the players he wanted the most due to a lack of budget. David Moyes is a better manager and coach than people have given him credit for and while a lot has changed in 20 years the changes he made to turn Everton’s fortunes are still as valid now as they were back then. The man is a strong believer in play statistics and sports science and means he isn’t going on the extinction list any time soon. To Hammers fans, I’ll be happy for you as he has turned West Ham into the kind of team I grew up watching at Everton. If he stays for the long run then you’ll have a secure (bit occasionally bumpy) road ahead of you.

Eloquently said. Also feel the failures at his previous three clubs is what is pushing him to take more risk and to be less certain in an over conservative approach. He's there to stay for a while imo, and what he has will be our blueprint for the future. Sullivan has cast a long shadow over the playing staff, far too involved, far too impressed with his barely adeqaute football knowledge, and thinks he's the world's no. 1 football scout. That Moyes managed to convince him to sell Haller & Anderson for an 80% loss says it all, Moyes is in charge of the football side now, without the board interferance in the playing staff that plagued the previous managers. Quite a few of us were very disappointed he was given the boot the first time, yeah, the football was dire at times, but we could see there was a different attitude, the team were running and playing for each other. Unfortunately Bilic was so weak in training that they were all seriously out of condition, players couldn't run for 70 mins, let aone 90, so resulkts were hard to come by until that new fitness regime started to show. We went from the team that ran the least in the league under Bilic, to the Moyes version that was amongst the teams than ran the most. If it hadn;t been for the Burnley game and the chairmen getting coined I think he would've stayed, Sullivan blamed moyes for it, when really it had nothing ot do with what was going on the pitch and all to do with Sullivan treating fans like mug punter wandered onto a used car lot and he had a lemon to sell. I thought history was going to repeat iutself. Pellegrini's team had gone from a side that ran to a side that stood still (I think his first season was down to Moyes, much like Bilic's was down to Allardyce's fitness & defensive organisation). Moyes came in, the crowd were restless and ready to express their anger again. And then came corona. Moyes had the chance to work on fitness, get to know his players, see who had the right attitude, and who he wantd out. And now we have the best team spirit I can remember, a team I can be proud of, even in defeat.

That's an excellent analysis of David Moyes' career.. I wanted to see him do a great job at United, and I still think he was given the bum's rush. I'm happy to see him doing so well at West Ham, and if he gets Jesse Lingard back - I know they'll kill us next season. If Sir Alex thought he was good enough --it should have been given time to succeed, as our last season with Sir Alex we were a patchwork squad that eked out a title on a season everyone else tanked. The club was in poor shape.

Moyes is a great manager ain't he? You know what wasn't mentioned in this video? Three things related to one factor - the board... 1. West Ham board (although disliked) have steadily invested in the squad for several seasons... Even players that have not worked out (e.g. Haller). This has a MAJOR benefit to clubs as they aquire more strength in depth, the quality of training goes up, the development of younger and fringe players improves too. 2. The board have also provided stability at the club, backing Moyes, supporting with funds, allowing him to build and invest heavily in a backroom team. 3. Moving to a new stadium has been hugely beneficial to the club financially I personally don't like the D&D goons... BUT... You simply can't say that they are doing a bad job as of right now... they are investing in all areas of the club, their recruitment has been spot on for seasons (some transfers don't work out no matter what club you are - e.g. Veron @ Utd, Shevchenko @ Chelsea). Football is cyclical.. and West Ham do need to double down on this approach NOW if they want to hang onto their status as a top PL team, otherwise its so easy to fade back into mid-table / flirting with relegation.
@jamiemckell34

Knowing moyes he is scouting the championship now... If I were on the board however, I'd seriously be considering going in for Ivan Toney now... in Jan... as a long term option with Antonio - let them battle it out for now.. and I would perhaps look at Kamara from Marsielle in the CDM role.. maybe even Tchoumeni from Monaco if they want to be really ambitious...

As a west ham fan, I personally have no fear of Rice leaving in the next year or two - especially if we are still knocking about one of the European competitions. Also would just like to say well done for providing such a detailed and well balanced analysis of our owners, a subject that can often get very polarising. All credit to the Moyesiah!!

As an Everton fan, I can't help but wish Moyes well. His reputation for dour football is undeserved, it was mostly pragmatism, and we played some really nice stuff in the later seasons. His teams are solid, he's got an amazing eye for a bargain (not so much for a big signing), and he's financially really sound. I think there is a bit of caution when ahead that costs them a few goals and points at the end of the season. I don't believe i ever going back, but I still look on with envious eyes as Everton concede yet again from a set piece.

Man Alfie you and your videos from 2019 and early 2020 have turned me into a Jarrod Bowen fanboy and I am from India, a United fan so a mid-table team like West Ham isn't supported here and fans like myself who do watch Football lot keenly than just their favourite teams once a week still find it weird but man what a character he is especially as I am a boy raised on a farmhouse myself. And David Moyes is well and truly a football genius, sadly arrived at my club at the worst possible time and Woodward didn't give him what he wanted in the market apart from Fellaini. He'd have definitely done better than Ole had he been given signings like Solskjaer has been handed, like Moyes literally convinced Toni Kroos arguably the greatest midfielder of this generation to sign for us and LvG pulled the plug on it.

Above all else, what Moyes did well to change the club was completely transforming the attitude of the playing group. No longer was indifference and half-assing tolerated (as it was at times under Pellegrini), and players' egos had to be put aside - or else risk being sold. The same policy applied to player acquisitions, with a target's character being the key factor in making or breaking a deal. Take Vladimir Coufal for instance- a solid enough Premier League RB, but whose impact in raising the squad's overall professionalism and dedication is worth immeasurably more than his paltry £5 million fee. It's said that the relentless training schedule of both he and Soucek even encouraged Andriy Yarmolenko to follow suit, and come in on his off days to work on his game. Such dedication was unheard of in Pellegrini's time, and it's no doubt the reason he failed, whereas Moyes has succeeded.

As I remember, there was a very questionable goal. Sammy Lee (I think) was in an offside position, sitting directly in front of the West Ham goal putting his boot on when the ball pretty much flew directly over him and into the net for a Liverpool goal. Clive Thomas ruled that Lee wasn’t interfering with play and allowed the goal to stand. One of the worst refereeing decisions I’ve ever seen.
