I was an admin on that forum as a kid. Rockstar also took two towers out of the game resembled the World Trade Center. They also removed all airplanes, other than one which has its wings clipped. You're absolutely correct, Darkel was cut mainly because of 9/11. There were attempts to mod him back into the game, which failed largely due to a lack of experience of working with that engine. It could probably be done today by experienced mod makers.

Cody It's already been confirmed that not much was changed. Just mostly Darkel, detached pedestrian limbs, redirecting flight paths of planes in the sky, and the ability to blow up the plane at the airport.

Miss Tokyo Fun I just read that Kotaku article, very interesting. This was ages ago, I was around 13 years old, and back then the twin towers being removed was largely considered fact, even amongst the administration team. We also had members posting screen shots and box art depicting two large towers, which now I realize must have been GTA3's equivalent of San Andreas bigfoot. Martin (a.k.a Tank, the webmaster of GTA Forums, grandtheftauto3.net back then) has/had a close working relationship with R*, he flew out to New York from London to visit their studios pre Vice City launch. So I never really doubted anything he said especially at that age. I was SquirrelMaster / Squirrel on the forums. In case any of you are familiar with the site or wish to look me up.

yea, I remember how amazing and incredible it was when gta3 came out and how epic it was... it was so amazing of a time to be first introduced into this new open world gaming and how incredible and infinite it felt and how it just never got old, whether you played the story mode, or just fucked around and built up ur character and his garages and it was just never-ending forever intriguing fun... it was so innovative and genre-revolutionizing, and it was such a game-changer, that it blew all of our little minds with how evolved this all felt, considering it was the first of its kind.... such a fucking awesome time period, and I still have my original copy, along with my original memory cards with all my old game saves.... good times, great memories...…..

GTA 3 really was the best game for its time. Even today, I would still occasionally boot up the game just to mess around and have fun. It's sad that not many modern GTA players know how to appreciate GTA3 and other old GTA games. These old GTA games have a certain charm about them. I can replay GTA3, Vice City and SA today and i still like them infinitely more than both GTA4 and 5. And i also own both Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories and i still like playing them too.

Funny enough in Liberty City Stories PSP game based in the same Liberty City there is a mission where you have to cause mayhem around the city by killing as many people as possible with a fire truck, so i don't think they really ever had an issue with killing innocents as parts of missions. Oh and also in Liberty City Stories. There is a bombing mission where you go into the old subway with a van full of explosives and practically demolish half of staunton island. Ever wondered why there is a massive construction site where the Twin Towers, or Empire State building?..... Well that area went kaput in the LCS bombing that is set a few years earlier than 2001 GTA 3

Rockstar already had a mission in an earlier game where you get to kill innocent civilians. In the GTA 2 mission "Hot Dog Homicide!" ( or "R.S.L. Bows!") you have to pick up civilians with a bus. When you got enough you drive them to a meat plant where they are killed and processed to have their meat used for Hot Dogs for the Russian mafia. Pretty hardcore stuff and in my opinion still one of the most disturbing missions in the whole GTA series!

I know this video is old but I've got a bit of a theory about it I'm thinking that darkel would originally be known as being tonally strange, hence his name being "dark'el And knowing how rockstar rolls with the gta games, I'm thinking they'd try to use his missions and stuff to possibly take the piss out of him and his crazy demands, potentially moving from missions where the main character goes from just shrugging and going along with it, to maybe sabotaging his plans at the motivation of other characters. Idk man, they say that Darkel and his storyline didn't fit tonally with the game, but you still have missions in GTA 3 that are tonally out of place. For example Kingdom Come. Although the mission revolves around a set up caused by the antagonist and another character, the actual set up is what's tonally different. In the mission, the set up is an ambush of crazed suicide bombers. surrounding what happened in 9/11, which was a mass-murder suicide, why include a mission like that in the game, but be worried about a hobo that gave you missions that involved acts with explosions and what not? I think there's is more that meets the eye (as an outsider/non-dev's perspective)....
