Claudine, I have such appreciation and respect for your work, these awesome and informative videos, and your gracious investment of time and talent. With all due respect to anyone who preferred the history, design, and intention of the original altar, chairs, and furnishings in the cathedral, I completely agree. With much humility, I would also offer a perspective of the new furniture. The modern bronze and carved wood pieces reflect the language of their time and place in history, influenced by fire which engulfed the cathedral, and events and hands that have shaped it. The polished bronze, chosen as the material for the altar, is at once massive, strong, balanced, and unbreakable. The metal scaffolding that was placed around the cathedral formed a metallic skeleton which, even melted, supported the structure through the fire. It which was replaced entirely with new scaffolding to encase the entire structure, and stabilize the renaissance of the cathedral. The density of the bronze is balanced by its sensuous and graceful shape, forged and honed from fire. The semicircular form is one of the most common shapes found in design. The circle represents wholeness and unity, while the semicircle leaves a form open for completion. The smooth shape and low profile of the wooden chairs have a quiet strength and reverent structure, their collection uniformly rests below the forest, supporting the roof above. Although the new furnishings are not heavily carved reproductions, or antiques loaned to the cathedral, they collectively speak with discretion and reverence for the beauty of their ornate surroundings. They do not draw attention to themselves beyond the important purpose they serve.

Although I'm not in favor of the new "furniture's" choice of style, i.e the ridiculous bathtub altar and milking stool for bishop's chair, I saw the computer reconstruction how it looks like when installed. It's actually not overpowering. My take is that they can always be removed and thrown away without giving any sentimental attachment to it. The grand old altar, on the other hand, is majestic and historic.

Question: The base of the magnificent new central spire is wrapped in, what appears to be, a picture of the previous one. I’m sure that’s not permanent. What is its purpose? Was it put there for the Olympics?

C est aussi ce que je me dis bien évidemment cela ne va pas resté comme ça. Oui peut-être pour les jeux. Ce qui est sûr c'est que nous allons trouver la cathédrale identique 'y compris la base de la flèche c est évident.

The base is the "open work" of the spire and the lead covering will be added shortly when the work around the base of the spire has ended. There was scaffolding covering it that went through the center of the interior to the ground and that needed to be removed to complete the altar. fingers crossed the lead covering is in place next month :)

Terrible new "furniture". Hardly befitting for a grand old dame!
