When I was about 12 I used to go round to Harrison's house in Sutton to play with his son Todd! I never met Harry though. Perhaps it was around that time Harrison wrote this story.

This was published in the January 1, 1958 edition of _Galaxy_ , and submissions ran a few months ahead of publication. Harry could have written this as late as early 1957. That would make you around 79 years old now.

@@JohnDlugosz I'm 'only' 67. Harrison lived in the UK for a few years in the 1960's, his son was in my school class.

Harry Harrison entered my consciousness in 1970 ask one of the editors responsible for the series "Dangerous Visions". Well Worth reading. The readers enunciation and syntax makes me a tad suspicious if Harrison actually wrote this story.

It was definitely written by Harrison. I recall reading it in the 1970s, and it's also available on Project Gutenberg.

*as ? (not "ask") The "reader" shows artifacts of being a dumb text-to-speech being fed an imperfect OCR copy of the text. I don't see what that would tell you about the original author of the story.

Yea, this was published in the January 1, 1958 edition of _Galaxy_ . A lot of things didn't age well from Golden Age science fiction.

Here's a touch of reality humans can't survive isolation for weeks at a time let alone months and that's exactly what they describe they essentially go crazy so the concept of sending one human to do this is absurd The writers are really lazy on this

I find it so ridiculous that future empires civilizations would still be using paper that is the dumbest thing you have ships that can travel across galaxies You have incredibly destructive weapons cybernetics and you're still using paper really. The writers can't be more creative and come up with a different concept , just plain old paper ???? Lazy

Even the readers of a science fiction magazine had no concept of electronic document storage in 1957. Trying to describe such a thing would detract from the actual story. So it's not lazy -- it's a product of its time and befitting a certain audience.
