I love when people analzye, not lore or unimportant details such as dates-- attempting to look and find the entire meaning and logic of this world, but instead work to find the message of a story. Television can suddenly become poetry.

as a massive fan of DHMIS, this essay is phenomenal !! 'dont hug me' is often analyzed through the lens of its narrative storytelling - with almost complete disregard towards its use of music theory and other artistic forms (such as its color pallet). I grew up watching the series, and now as a senior at university - my admiration of it has only grown. fantastic work !!

3:06 considering the occasional gore they show, especially like in the climax of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 5, I can't see how this was ever actually aimed at children. I was always under the impression that it was a Parody of kid shows, aimed at Adults.

I like that despite the horror of the web series, the TV show incorporates humor while still keeping the horror. Some of the dark, surreal humor of season 2 reminds me of Flapjack in some ways.

I love video analysis and I feel like me sitting in my room alone with nothing but the sound of the ceiling and standing fan as well as the constant glare of the blue light on my computer really adds to the empty repetitiveness this video wants me to feel, but even without that this was a very cool experience. I realized midway through that he wasn’t actually saying anything different anymore he was literally saying the same thing, just taking the context of each episode into account. But I never clicked off.

It is definitely NOT A KIDS SHOW. How the heck have you not realized that
@amazingvioletrose16806 күн бұрын
Probably because so many kids watch it? Like me (12) and my friend (9) watched it together every day, even rewatching them. I also watch the walking dead, theres nothing wrong with showing kids gore and horror, it's not like I'm traumatized. It actually has helped me not be terrified of "scary" or stressful situations, being injured has never bothered me either.

This is such a good video!! I love seeing people analyze DHMIS through its overall message and what it means to you personally. People get so caught up in piecing together the narrative, that they miss what’s already in front of them. I’ve loved DHMIS since I first watched it as a kid, and I rediscovered it when the Channel 4 show dropped. It’s so different from what I usually watch in that it’s utterly baffling. Everything feels overwhelming and alien, from the bright, saturated colors to the long pauses and repetitive sounds. As a kid, it scared and confused me. Like the bright and overwhelming shows catered to kids I had seen all my life, DHMIS seemed to know exactly what it was doing with each bright piece of felt and tick of the clock. But never once did I click off. Even before the music reaches a terrifying crescendo, blood flowing and screams filling the viewer’s ears, DHMIS never allows you to get comfortable. Other shows with this format use it to keep the audience’s attention, simply casting a rainbow on the screen and letting the children clap along, all while the parents silently admonish the bad quality and soulless message. These videos speak to those people, bringing them right into their worst nightmare. Our three main characters are passive leads, letting this world of talking objects and confusing lyrics take them on uncomfortable journeys with pointless lessons. Until they don’t. Until one by one, they each start to voice their discomforts. The colors are too much, the songs are unwelcome, the lessons are shallow, even inaccurate. They start to think for themselves, and they start to speak freely. Then, and only then, does the blood begin to spill. To me, DHMIS has always been about free expression and thought, finding a voice in a world so desperate to make you keep clapping along to the music. What will it take to escape that world? Why keep objecting when the result seems to be the same every time? Who are you capable of becoming once the plug is finally pulled? This was way longer than I meant it to be, but all this to say that I loved the analysis! I hope this show makes another comeback soon!
