Something about Bob's playing, so hyperfrenetic and full of explosive energy, I could listen to him with the Replacements all day

It didn't get much better than this back in '86. I was lucky enough to have seen them 7 times with Bobby. When Bobby got booted, things would never sound as good. Truly one of my most treasured bands.

They were just awesome. Their early, middle, and late periods- with Bob or Slim, Chris or Steve. I like it all. All the albums were great I think. Paul grew as a songwriter so the music changed. It never sucked as some would argue. Think about their growth... the Beatles were playing "Love Me Do" in 1963 and "Come Together" in 1969. How far apart from that is "Customer" and "Merry Go Round". The Mats are not the Beatles but they were effin' great. Still listen to them all the time.

At first I was thinking I wanted to hear Tommy better. Then I remembered the recording in mono from a walkman placed face up on a table on the second floor that I listened to for weeks straight. Seeing the Mats at First Ave was what we dreamed of. Thank you for the recording and for posting it.

From Let it Be to Don't Tell a Soul The Replacements were better than the Beatles. Paul Westerberg solo wrote better songs when he left the Replacements than any post-Beatles. I still think their lives sets are nothing compared to their studio records.

when they decided to play and not stagger wasted, they were a perfect rock and roll band. the beatles were a studio creation...the stones, at least, did it live and did it well until 1980. i pefer the twin tone years
@danielstoddart
@danielstoddart 3 жыл бұрын
@@DaveAnchovies The Beatles were a "studio creation", you say? The Beatles paid their dues playing dive bars with an audience of drunks listening to them, just like the Replacements. Later, they got more sophisticated in their songwriting and studio sessions...just like the Replacements. Both bands sound completely different, but the career trajectory is mostly the same, just not at the same level of fame.

No they weren't. But they were/are in a league of their own. It's not a foot race, it's art. It's not supposed to be about first and second and third place and trophy's and shit like that. By that way of thinking people like Cardi B, and Harry Styles are "greats" and I think we can all agree that is not the case. Be very grateful that you live in a time where you get to have the music of The Beatles and The Replacements as well as so many other truly great artists thanks to that canvas we call ROCK AND ROLL.
