This isn't exactly a re-release. They just packaged the original rom with the executable that makes it work on modern versions of Windows. If this was an official re-release, they would have put this out on consoles and steam.

Ngl, I kinda expected this to just be a basic port. GOG when rereleasing old pc versions of games like with Silent Hill 4 and MGS1 they mostly just make sure the game runs at all on modern OS-es and occasionally add widescreen support. I really didn't expect anything fancy at all.

Yea GOG has been doing this for such a long time it is what they are known for, I totally forgot you could find amazing older games preserved and made functional on modern pc's through their storefront. I actually use Heroic Games Launcher to access my GOG library so I can limit the amount of additional launchers I install but I do like the way Gog Galaxy looks.

I will say though with how small and old the game is I would figure it would not have so many issues on different rigs but once again pc gaming moment. I hope Capcom officially Remasters the games with the seamless HD mod type fixed done by hand, that would be so sick and I would love to have the OG re games on switch physical copies.

The trilogy really should be remastered, like they did with Tomb Raider. The fact these RE ports are not on console suggests GOG were responsible for getting these releases jump-started, whereas Capcom don't seem to care for some reason.

Judging from some of GOG's past releases I wouldn't doubt they wanted to include this stuff but Capcom prevented it. Seems like the choose the safe bet and made it 1:1 but compatible with modern systems with the hope that the modding community can add to their releases.

Interesting how the the OG RE trilogy is on GOG without any form of announcements at all. Maybe I am wishful thinking here, but I hope Capcom has something down the line of the OG trilogy getting an official announcement with it being on Steam and modern consoles. I have herd that RE1 Director's Cut is on PS5 through the assinine PS Plus requirements, but I would rather be wanting a nicely done bundle for a anniversary for the series.

You dont need PS plus. You can buy it stand alone. Also in an amazing move if you bought a PS1 game years ago say for PSP, Vita etc and they release it on PS5 (as a ps1 game) you dont have to rebuy.

I feel like expectations were just misplaced. The value I see here is that I can own a legal copy of the game now, and I feel like that's what GOG really wants. Calling it lazy when the work to fix it was as minimal as adding the Classic Rebirth dll to the installation is silly, there's obviously another reason. Whether it's legal, or relating to their goal, and whether we think those reasons are good or not are irrelevant. This is a win for the franchise just being back on a visible storefront.

No, I called the scaling lazy. It's pretty easy to sharp scale retro game graphics outside of an integer scale, but they went with a very lazy method that makes the game very blurry unless it's scaling to a whole number.

Yeah I hate how some PC gamers complain when an old game release on PC for 20$, like "OMG no 4K ? No unlimited FPS ? No aiming with the mouse ? Lazy port not worth !", most recent exemple I have in mind is MGS VOL1, for 60$ you get MGS 1 2 & 3 plus some NES games of MGS, it comes with books that are pretty interesting to read too, It was what I wanted: To play the old games like back in the days, you launch the game and it work, you buy a PS1 game: You get a PS1 not some duckstation emulated game with enchanced graphism. So I'll probably get this RE collection just because of mods.

Sadly this is the double edged sword of GOG. On the good side: They're making old PC ports work on modern systems and we love them for that On the bad side: A good chunk of old PC ports suck, lol.

From what I've seen, RE1 pc port wasn't great. Only cool thing is it was the only version of RE1 in the US that actually has the uncensored intro cutscene/FMVs. We didn't even get that with the awesome 2006 Nintendo DS port.

@@Gruntvc hum, I disagree honestly. For the time you had better visual than most console port, and door skip. The game controls are more responsive than psx overall and the cutscenes, even laggy are uncensored and in colors. It might be bad for us now yes for sure. but for the time I don't know. Plus, if you're french spanish or german you can play this port at full speed in your native language instead of going for NTSC rom that european didn't have at that time anyway.

Yeah most console games from the 90’s/2000’s had terrible or okay at best pc ports. The unique architecture of those consoles made perfect ports almost impossible.

It's not the re-release I wanted, but I'm just happy atm to have a legal means to play the original RE games again that doesn't require paying a subscription fee. Part of me hopes that these ports get sales anyway to perhaps motivate Capcom to make a true remastered release later on.

Got the RE 1 yesterday and for anyone wondering how it plays on Linux via Lutris, it plays just fine, i finished the game last night with no problems. No crashing, no stuttering, no frame drops and my PS2 controller connected via an USB adapter on Pc just worked.

I noticed some issues like crispier models messing with the pre-rendered background and the low fps for cutscenes. But playing the game last night officially for the first time in a while made me so happy. I know MODs and stuff exist but playing the game again is enough for me. But I hope this kicks Capcom in the ass to support the classics alongside the remakes! Great video man ♥️

Resident Evil 1 is my favorite game of all time so it getting love and attention from the fanbase and even GOG is very awesome. It could have been more , I miss arrange mode , quick turns and stuff. I've never played the OG's so i can't say I got a fond memory of them, but a straight re-release without any improvements feels like a robbery when tomb raider got the same re-release treatment with a bunch of extras, including an out-of-the-box graphic improvement and bigger poly count to lara and enemies

The question is, what were GOG actually allowed to do? The people at GOG are neither dummies nor are they lazy, so it's extremely unlike that they don't know about Classic REbirth and the high-quality video and audio replacements. And creating an installer where all those mods are already properly installed isn't any different to creating an installer for just the base game. As such it stands to reason that Capcom simply didn't allow GOG to do anything beyond the absolute basics to get the game(s) running on Win 10/11. I might be wrong, but that's the only explanation I can come up with for now that makes sense to me.

@@nWoPorViDa I have my PC connected to my TV as well. You don't necessarily need a PC monitor. However, even though PC monitors are usually smaller, they do provide a better picture quality, which is one of the reasons they are more expensive than TVs.

@ethanasherredfield3348, I checked for US PSN. The RE1 DC on PS4/PS5 remains locked behind Premium Plus pay wall and didn't receive trophies like Alone In The Dark The New Nightmare recently did. So yeah, we still don't have a good way to play RE PS1 Trilogy on current consoles. They're still stuck on PS3/PSP/Vita.

Unless a person is really into modding or haks, this new release is still a good option to get and play the old PC game. It's also great for preservation of the software. Fan mods are still needed. It's great to have both.

It's a little disappointing that to get the same experience as Classic Rebirth, we have to download the Japanese language version, and then apply Classic Rebirth. These features should have been included as standard, without needing to take extra steps.

there is no way the censored cutscenes/false advertising on the box were actually mistakes. they time and time again had chances to fix it and they chose not to. after some years they just removed the "unscencored" label from the box. they censored it on purpose obviously and just said it was a mistake to avoid controversy.

As somebody who doesn't mind too much on the video aspect of porting, I'm absolutely loving this release of RE1. Sure it could at least look better on my 1080p monitor, but the models and renderings are still notably the smoothest of any version I've personally played, same goes with the audio. My only criticism/wish is that they released the Director's Cut port on PC, as I loved the extra scenes and it had the best unlockables.

Well... That's just not good enough. That is not what I was hoping for. I don't want a patched version of the old bad ports. I want Capcom themselves, to officially rebuild these games to modern hardware (PC and consoles) and release as real remasters and include optional enhancements like the upscaled backgrounds and hud like Seamless mod as well as higher quality character models (while staying authentic and still low poly in general. More or less like Nightdive remasters of Quake 1 and Quake 2 enhanced models). Or outsource it to Nightdive.

It's cool to have but I admit I am sad a bit we still don't have a "Definitive Edition" that has options to turn on the various changes in DualShock Edition/Deadly Silence. Like being able to toggle on the knife having it's own button like DS or the Arrange mode of DualShock Edition.

Is it weird Capcom and GOG are selling this bundle for nearly the same price as the Tomb Raider Trilogy Remaster which actually came with both versions of each game? Yes, it is. But I'm just glad someone who's curious about the OG games can just search for them, find the first link, buy it and play it out of the box just like everybody did back in 1997-1999. No need to understand about emulation, no need to go after weird japanese versions with japanese instalators, no need to meddle with game files. Just buy it, install it and play it. This ain't about remastering the game, it's about conserving it.

For a given definition of modern, the trilogy are available digitally on PS3. The first is also available on PS5 and don’t have to have PS Plus to get it like some are saying, you can just buy it outright

The big problem from start for you is that this was never supposed to be an enhanced re-release. This and all of GOG's releases are meant to be archives. It's meant to keep the game as it was on release, only fixing egregious bugs and making it playable today. *Of course* fan mods will outclass game preservation. Much the same way a Mario rom hack will outclass the cart.

Never had any console, and I never expected to find a PC copy at someone's garage sale. This could be my first chance to easily play, but it's good to know what to expect. I can follow mod installation guides and troubleshoot fine enough, but the RE games have always felt more complicated...emulators, needing to own a copy of the game, etc. For now, I've wishlisted this. It feels like buying it would mean I own a legal copy of the game, which would also make me feel better about trying fan editions. But, from the differences you're describing, I think the GOG edition as-is would not be as enjoyable for me. Maybe, by the time it goes on sale, the mod support will help bridge the gap to something closer to the "definitive PC port" of the game. Or maybe, by that time, I'd have figured out how to use the fan-made ports that (from what I've seen on KZbin) seem to be really good.

They will quickly shrug it off and proceed to bingo night. The only difference is if you ask politely they invite you to bingo night and the rest of the game is just a bingo sim. I think for most PC gamers if you're into this you'll likely be able to figure out the mods yourself. It's not too hard. If you want, I'd recommend that HD REbirth mod of course, but also if you're interested, I'd say check out the HD mod for it as well. It doesn't make it look like the remake from 2002, but it ups the quality of the original graphics while keeping it looking basically the same as it originally did. It definitely helps everything look much nicer. But with this you also get full controller support anyway, so once you mod it a bit, it becomes the ideal way to play this game nowadays.

My gripe with this re-release is the terrible quality of the live action videos and CGI cutscenes. I've just gone and got the source next versions and applied all of the Rebirth patches / HD textures add on's.

It is an issue. In their defense, that is how the PC FMVs were originally packaged on the disc, but they should have replaced them with higher quality ones.

I've always understood GoG as an archive for old games as they were - the only real changes I've ever seen them make are ones intended to make the basic release work on modern operating systems and that's about it. I get the impression anyone asking for a remaster or enhanced port doesn't really get what GoG even is. Availability and accuracy are the point, not enhancements.

I think it's definitely worthy just to have convenient, easily accessible options for the original trilogy. I myself have the Classic REbirth mods installed on my computer for the original trilogy, but RE1 crashes every hour and a half or so. Tried to tinker with it to hell and back but no dice. I have to save about every hour, exit, and go back in if I replay it. So even people will the willingness or the knowledge may be turned off by the bs that can come along with stuff like that. So while I'm mostly satisfied with Classic REbirth, I think there's certainly a place for this trilogy on GOG. I'll probably pick it up when they're all out.

There's tutorials on how to get rebirth up and running with the media kite version. Re 1-3 are all available. It's very Easy to follow. I haven't tried the GOG but I see no reason to spend 24 bucks when the seamless project is available with more options.

9:32 - People who are super-negative about this port also just wildly underestimate what a massive pain in the ass it is to get mid-to-late-90s PC games running well on modern PCs; basically any old PC game that didn't run on DOS and thus can't be packed in with a preconfigured DOSbox setup is pure pain. GOG does a pretty good job of it (even that stuttering issue you mentioned is something that they are aware of and intend to patch), and this port does run pretty damn smooth. And make no mistake, the setup that they got these games running on *was handled by GOG.* While other retailers provide nothing to the game itself beyond a launcher app and some DRM to appease the investors with, GOG invests in getting games up to compatibility standards and then sells that product DRM-free. That's another thing that the average gamer doesn't know enough to appreciate, I guess.

On the topic of black bars, a nice thing about 8K is that it can perfectly integer scale 240p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K. Resolution wise 8K is in the realm of dimensioning returns, but in terms of scaling it’s the end game.

After watching a video on the Alpha Protocol GOG release, it can take YEARS for GOG to even get the chance to release a game for sale. Could the port be better? Yes but the onus is on Capcom to release the best port. This could be pure speculation but GOG prolly has to work on what Capcom gives them for the port . It could just be that they don't have the permission to make certain changes.

This GOG release of 1-2-3 have door skip which removes the door animations, there is also mods on pc for re0 and re1make to skip doors.

I still have the original PC CDROM games from my childhood times. RE color intro movie and the exclusive Ingram for Jill and the Minimi for Chris. Working good on W11 but does perform funny, like 1.5 speed in gameplay. Just can't unlock the Advanced Mode and I remember it was possible on this game, I've done it long ago. RE2 doesn't work well, got corruption in some graphics in certain areas but is playable, needs to be configured before start playing. RE3 is the most good looking and stable, just got few random crash and game closed out of nowhere sometimes cuz skipped door animation too much I believe.

There's been so many re-releases of resident evil and there's so many ways to play the original classic RE series, there's literally no reason to pay for this. Will we ever get a new legacy game ? Will we ever see a new genre of video game similar to how RE carved out the path for survival horror?

I know it would have been impossible but it would have been nice if there was a multi-version selection. Kinda like the disney collection on ps5. Play the original,directors cut, pc, saturn, or ds version with a button press. GoG has a chance to have the Complete Re1 selection and they aren't making a better product than what I can emulate for free with all the bells and whistles.

Jared they are attempting to keep it as close to it's original release as possible. And yes you can mod the Japanese version as Carcinogen put out a step by step on how to do it (need to go through Galaxy however to select the Japanese version) But like you said get it to support more releases like this, give us modern releases of these old games, honestly I jumped right to it when I saw it. Best $25 I've spent

As someone who didn't have a PC in the 90s (well, not one that would play games) I never really got to experience any classic PC ports, so this one being preserved (10 FPS cutscenes and all) is awesome, and will be a cool way to come back to the original trilogy in a slightly different way! And the inclusion of the Japanese version is just rad, too. Also, I can use a Switch Pro Controller natively, so that makes this the best version by default 😎 EDIT: Spontaneously hit with the realization that if Capcom is cool with GOG doing this, the PC versions of Breath of Fire IV, Megaman Legends, X3 and X4 are on the table 👀

Last Christmas, my wife bought me sealed copies of the original 3 games for ps1. It's impressive how well they all hold up. I really enjoy the remakes that Capcom has put out, but I do wish more people could experience the originals. Replaying OG RE2 kind of ruined the remake for me, funnily enough.

Unrelated to the video but, I have a love/hate relationship with games that have fixed camera angles. I like the cinematic look of them, but I don't like how devs typically don't account for enemy placement. I got annoyed with RE1 remake today because I got myself in a situation that wouldn't have been if I knew an enemy was off screen. I've come up with a solution though for what I'm working on. So, I hope other devs who like that style in modern day consider using it. Its basically just, having multiple camera angles that change when an enemy is on screen. Not sure if it would have been possible back then though with the limited data.

To be fair tho, I'm pretty sure GOG is about not updating anything. Upgrades would be nice, but preservation is their game. I did have a speed issue and a friend had a controller issue, so this port definitely needs work, but the idea isn't to give better framerates and scaling and whatnot, just giving the exact game a modern platform. Outside of some bugs that need fixing, I feel they have mostly done that

I like that ultra hardcore PC guys can still get their fan mods that make the game run the way they like while also GOG gave us a benchmark for more casual people to just have an easy, legal way to get these great classics. I've always not really cared for frame rates and scaling and stuff so I'm not bothered by... pretty much anything you viewed as a Negative haha. But its great we both have options that are accessible now.
