Peter and Jill Hamilton from Tighnabruaich in Scotland shot this film during their 1950's voyage to the South Pacific in their 25ft, engineless yacht Salmo. Peter's book, The Restless Wind, is a charming account of their adventures. The film is narrated by their son, Jock Hamilton, who offers sailing adventures at Beagle Cruises www.beaglecruises.com

I sailed a Morgan 24 from Michigan to Venezuela and back over a two year period. Bigger is not better. I sold a 34' because it was too big in a severe thunderstorm.

I just watched the "Bold Journey" episode of Peter and Jill's trip from Montreal to Tahiti and back to Los Angeles where they sold their little boat. That episode is on the PeriscopeFilm KZbin channel. Evidently Jill had become pregnant on their honeymoon journey and they decided to end their circumnavigation attempt in Tahiti, go to L.A. sell their boat and fly home to Scotland. And that is where the show ended. I was fascinated by the couple and wanted to learn more and found this video.

Wow this is too cool. I am a ship repairman of 23 years old living in San Diego working in the bay and have had a lifelong dream of repairing and sailing a wooden boat long distance. I recently was working on a job and got offered a boat. This boat I am receiving is salmo!! I will be receiving logs and charts from these journeys and will be creating a KZbin account on my travels with salmo, very cool this movie exists I can’t even believe my eyes and ears at the moment.

As a circumnavigator using every piece of technology including a diesel I could get my hands on and to going to all the places except Picarin island( didn’t want to lose my boat on anchor) this is obviously amazing. Unless you are a true Bluewater sailor you cannot begin to understand the hardships, danger and accomplishment this is.Artificial adventure at its best! Very interesting.Wow

What incredible talented people your parents were. To conceive of such a venture and to actually put it into practice at a time following the deprivations of the Second World War is an amazing achievement in its self. Without any of the comforts of modern clothing, an engine, gps and any of the navigational aides now currently available adds to their accomplishment. Almost everyday we hear of young adventurers seeking sponsorship via YT to fund their life’s ambition, equipped with every conceivable gadget, all credit to them, but the Hamilton’s did it quietly and alone. I’m absolutely sure that Jock, Katherine and Gail have inherited many of the qualities from their parents and hope that in turn their children, also will benefit also from their pioneering and self reliant grand parents. They should all rightfully be proud of their family’s proven self reliance.

Wonderful film! That's how I learned sailing; in the early 60's although we had a "very big engine" (5hp) we barely used… This film should be watched by all the would be sailors who ask us for money through patreon to finance their expensive voyages at sea while relying only to electronics… some of them end up as excellent sailors, too many of them just hop from one overcrowded reorts to tourists spots having learned nothing bu to focus even more to their tasteless life "at sea". Thank you so much for posting.

Not needing or relying on all the modern inconveniences is a freeing experience on land or sea. Getting rid of all that stuff makes a boat much cheaper to buy and maintain. If you can't fix it yourself maybe you shouldn't have it, especially in remote parts of the world.

Makes me want to get an old film camera for recording my future voyages. I actually have a perfectly-preserved Reingold can of the same vintage... got excited when I found it because it appeared unopened, but someone had opened it on the bottom, LOL. I'm old enough to remember those days. This is a fine record of a truly epic sailing voyage!! The Hamiltons show here the true cruising attitude, as good today as it was then. thanks for uploading this.

Fearless 😱 I love it. The sailing without engine, radio, etc is the easiest part (done myself for years on 30 footer). No good weather-gear and no good liferaft however would make it near suicide in todays world. I think having lived thru a very damaging war (WW2) must make you see the world differently. I guess Jock - the son and narrator -must have been in awe with his parents, growing up. Seeing your mother impersonating a sealion in the wild is such a f awesome memory. On our great memories 🍻
