Queen Anne's Summerhouse, Bedfordshire, opened in September 2009. This film documents the restoration work which started in October 2008, following a three year fundraising campaign to save the building. This restoration has helped keep alive specialist craft skills in brick conservation, wrought ironwork and wood carving.

In the Netherlands you pay 1000 euro for a 10 sqaure meter room without sanitary facilities.... the poor people now have less luxury than the slaves at the chateau at that time.. most rich people nowadays get rich from squeezing poor people ...llike the did in the middleages till begin 1900's .. . they are in a good position themselves and those who work for them live for 1000 euros a month in a room of 10 square meters ......... .. so that the money they earn keeps coming back to the rich in a circle... the poor become poor, the rich become richer by squeezing poor people. remember that when you watch this video. And as much as I appreciate that old buildings are being restored, this does not have to be at the expense of the poorest in this world. zei ik net

Impressive restoration. I was disappointed at first to see the building turned into a single-use vacation rental. Then I remembered the building's original use as a "folly" for rich people to have picnics. So a vacation rental property isn't too far from its original use.

It's lovely to know that there are still people who respect their own history. There isn't a civilization on planet Earth that has not committed acts that they should now be ashamed of. We evolve as we become more enlightened and history is there as a reminder to those who might be tempted to go backwards. If that is erased, there is the ever-present danger of backsliding to the primordial ooze.

Well said, as a race, the human race, it is imperative that we know our history, regardless of how “good” or “bad”. To turn our collective backs on history is dooming us to repeat it not learn from it.

I really like it that Landmark Heritage Trust properties are vacation lets, this helps provide income for their continuing upkeep and encouraging future projects to preserve and put into use historical projects. Without a modern practical use and way of helping support themselves, historical properties will at some time in the future start getting neglected. But if they are helping pay their way, or even better, helping contribute to the Trust on top of their own upkeep costs, then preserving can grow and continue

Excellent research lends to a beautiful restoration, love the care and concern for preservation. I would have liked to see more of the period furnishings, in the bed frame and chairs, and tables, one doesn't have to install priceless antiques, but the modern low bed and lounge chairs seemed really out of place.

A laudable piece of restoration. What great work those young people have done as well as the specialists in their own fields. The film is slightly marred by a low sound level. Please ask your video editor to increase the volume and it will be perfect! Thanks for sharing.

Because of the low sound I didn't got who has payed the renovation and who profits afterwards? I suppose the behind the National Land Mark a lot of taxes of common people is the base of finance. But "normal" people will never ever benefit in terms of staying weekends there. That disappoints me. Nothing changes!!!

The Landmark Trust is a conservation charity that restores historic buildings, if you wish to stay in one of them you absolutely can, so there’s no need to complain whatsoever. They are doing an awful lot of good and should be thanked.

@@tamaracarter1836 My question was: "Where does the money come from for restoring?"
@tamaracarter1836
@tamaracarter1836 3 жыл бұрын
@@juttamussong-loffler9292 The landmark Trust owns, and has subsequently restored, over 200 historic properties in Britain. Each one is available to rent, and all money goes towards future restoration projects, maintenance costs, related bills etc. The “charity” also accepts donations, patrons and other forms of financial support. Do you still have a problem? Plus even if it were funded by the “taxes of common people” (which it isn’t), it would be money well spent seeing as our historic architecture is profoundly important to conserve.

@@tamaracarter1836 Again: Where does the money come from? Unfortunately, you did not answer my question.
@tamaracarter1836
@tamaracarter1836 3 жыл бұрын
@@juttamussong-loffler9292 It was established in 1965, and privately financed by its founders “Lord John Smith” and his wife “Lady Christian Smith” - two people that were heavily concerned with architectural conservation. Using their own money to purchase the first couple of properties, they would thoroughly restore and place each one on the short-term rental market (all of their buildings are holiday rentals). When sufficient money had been recovered (through rental income for example), they would purchase another set of buildings and repeat the process; slowly growing all the time. If you want any further information it’s very easy to look up for yourself.

Lovely project, but the results of the interior design look disappointingly dowdy. It is like nothing has happened between the 1970 and 2010 Britain in terms of interior design. Who would want to stay there? Only the kitchen looks contemporate. The rest of it looks like it already needs renovation. I wouldn't have minded the interior looking historic, but it just looks like the interior of any castle, which are filled with long-used or disused old sofas, beds, bed coverings and drapes. That bathroom, oh my God... and is that a single glazing? In the old days, wouldn't they have had wooden shutters in the interior of the main room? Also poor presentation: there are 4 turrets, however only one's use has been shown as a kitchen, the other one is presumably the staircase to the terrace, what about the other two?

No it's not. It's a folly, similar to what Americans call a gazebo. The wealthy built them as a retreat for an afternoon. Americans have "day destinations", this is the British answer from the 16th century by the wealthy. Can you imagine what Jeff Bezos would build as a "gazebo"?
