Nice review, It looks like you really put it to the test in real world scenarios. And I appreciate it. For me I think it’s a great $100 system to get your feet wet for newcomers into the retro gaming community. I think it will fill the void until I get my hands on a steam deck. Comparing it to $300-400 phones with a $70-$100 adapter doesn’t seem fair. For a 100 bones this thing still rips. I’m just looking to have fun with older titles and GameCube and Dreamcast is just a bonus. If you want something better just preorder a deck.

I'm someone who really tries to use every feature that's practical, so I thought it'd be fun to push the possible setups and uses. I def agree it's not a real argument comparing it to a phone, always found those arguments were never thought through, but they're out there.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that this is a sub $100 device. I think most people realize that GameCube & PS2 capabilities are just a bonus and no one expects GPD XP performance from these. For what it is, it's an excellent ultra portable retro game console and actually worth every penny it sells for.

interesting how you took the more critical and rational route of reviewing this device. as much as I love taki and rgc's videos, I do feel like they're a bit too superficial on their device analyses. Good video, though I always find the points about just using a phone a bit frivolous. The Pixel 6 is $600. Aside from horribly outdated and overheated phones at thrift stores and the like, I don't think there's a better deal than the Pocket 2+ for the pricepoint if you want Android (which I do for games, as an iPhone user).

Too be fair if you know where to look, mainly one plus website, you could have got one plus 8 (OLED, SD865, 8GB) for 199 on sale. one plus 8t with 12/256, oled, is 349 currently. too high imo for a dedicated gaming phone but a sight better than 600. @@siegarettes steam deck is too big and too little battery life for me. plus the wait...but you will wait for any of these i guess, including the odin. if you get a phone with like snapdragon 8 gen 1, that would give you way more power than the Odin, and open android flexibility. of course personally i dont love the feel of the kizhi on a phone, its too wide and it doesnt feel solid imo. dedicated handheld feels way better to me. At the end of the day it seems we are some time from all these cool handhelds being widely available. I'm in a holding pattern. But I have to admit in theory like a kishi and Sd 8 gen 1 phone would be a dream handheld available now.

@@siegarettes I would suggest people to grab a Used Samsung S10+ for about a $100 if they could. It's still competitive with today's flagships, but it comes with a pocketable controller. The Razer JungleCat pairs really well with it, and that combination blows the water out of the AYN Odin Pro (not pocketable) or the Retroid Pocket 2+. I still recommend the RP2+ to people because its so well put together and good value. It's so much above the RG351P and other options. This was the case with the RP2 as well, so I hope Retroid continue this momentum with the RP3 in the future.

Definitely ordering one of these next month. Gonna have to order a micro SD card too, which'll probably be about $30 or so. Normally I try to put every ROM I can on my things. Vita, flash carts, Xbox.... But I think in this case, I'll just use it for my favorites as opposed to my entire collection of 7000+ games. So a 256gb card should do fine. Can't wait to be honest. Like I said, I have a Vita. But it's not amazing at emulation. It can do up to 16bit games just fine. But it struggled on Mame in some cases, and anything 3D besides PS1, and it has a fit. Besides, I'd really like to just get a dedicated emulation handheld, as opposed to something I'm using for the actual console's purpose AND emulation. Just gotta decide on a color. Thinking all Black. But I really like the Gameboy colored ones with the pinkish purple face buttons. Might grab a little $10 carrying case off their site too. Would I like something even better than the Retroid Pocket 2+? Sure. There's better things out there. But I can't afford tons of money. I'm barely gonna manage to $150 or so I'm having to spend on this. So for the price, this seems great. Especially as something to carry around with me in it's case, and play when I'm out at a cafe or on a bus.

imo having a single device that actually fits in a pocket that isn't also an important device, is what makes the RP2+ work out for me. It was the form factor and size that did it more than anything else. I have a much more powerful android device, and I do use it to play games and things, but there's something nice about having this device which is unburdened by also being a phone. PS2 and Gamecube can actually go pretty well depending on your taste too. Some notable ones for me were Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation Vs Zeon. Fire Emblem needs a lower res primarily (.7x seems about the limit), and Fed vs. Zeon runs pretty much without issues. One thing to do with these systems is use PAL versions of the games, since they're usually set at 50FPS they end up being easier to get fully playable. Selection is pretty limited atm but there's a few. What I really don't understand is why Citra was included. Plenty games boot but none perform even remotely close to well enough to play, in my experience.
@siegarettes
@siegarettes 2 жыл бұрын
The size is really dang good! I hope they have better controls on the next one, but if they can keep it around the same size I'd be so happy. After using the Switch so long I'm happy to have handheld that's actually pocketable. Gamecube and stuff I'm mostly unlucky with. A lot I wanted to play are JP only, so they don't even have a PAL version. And even lower end games like the Bonk remake don't seem to run well for me, or need such low resolution it's hard to play. PN03 is like half frames even on the best configuration. I'm just not that interested in putting in that much work to squeeze out what to me are sub par results. Citra being included is def one of those cases I'm talking about of stuff that doesn't work being included. It can still be hit and miss even when you have the power to push it, but this thing absolutely does not.

@@siegarettes Makes sense, PS2/Gamecube are more neat bonuses I suppose is the best way to look at it There was a guy in the retroid subreddit who did an analog stick conversion for the right stick, but based on what they were showing it looks like it's pretty difficult/not something the average person would really want to try to do. My hope is this form factor sticks around - I don't mind a smaller, low-res screen with that small of a device. Retroid putting out an upgrade kit was a cool move, it would be rad if they did the same thing again/produced a third version that could be installed like that. It wouldn't take that big of an upgrade to push PS2/Gamecube to a 640x480 display, I don't think. Here's to hoping they continue and just keep making it better :)

Love your review and a rather similar perspective to things that I have. I've been contemplating handhelds and back and forth on a lot of things since most things don't quite fit what I want yet. Rp2+ does a lot of things well it seems, I want a dependable device that runs ps1/N64/GC/psp/ds (only for Pokemon and Castlevania) flawlessly so it's tempting for how much it can do and does right. People tell me to go for an Odin or steam deck and while I do want a steam deck eventually, I mostly want pocketability over all else. If I can't put it in my pocket, I'm not bringing it. However, I feel this is tempting me more to get something like the miyoo mini v2 or RG351MP since I love both of their design aesthetics as well as the pocketability , and for the rg351mp seems comfortable to play on.kinda wish we knew if they had a new rg351mp with improved internals. Though I'm fine with a device mostly being for ps1/gba and some others. Then get a gamesir v2 ,either Bluetooth or USBC . I don't really want to mess with taking off my phone case a lot. I also have a pixel 6 so may use that for days I want to play GC/ps2. I'm new with these new handheld gaming devices.
@siegarettes
@siegarettes 2 жыл бұрын
"if i can't put it in my pocket I'm not bringing it" is so dang true. was so excited for the Switch but the size alone meant it stayed at home or in a bag when I did take it. the Miyoo looks very cool tho it for sure is gonna run into some hard limits with anything n64 thanks to the controls alone. part of why I haven't got one yet. I dunno about the rg351mp but I do have the 351p and that form factor is really good. I don't really play 3d games on it and it's def aging, but once I set it up properly it turned into a great pocket device. there's so many good choices right now and I feel like they're only gonna get better. they even started taking pre-orders for new windows handhelds the AYA Neo Air and AYN Loki, which look wild.
@ekinteko
@ekinteko 2 жыл бұрын
The Retroid Pocket 2/2+ is the same pocketability as the Anbernic RG351p. The RG351mp feels a bit bigger because of the metal/weight, and I don't think its worth the upgrade from the plastic. So in that regard, just go with the RP2+. If you wanted to go slightly smaller, there's the PowKiddy RGB10. And around the same size (but heavier) the Anbernic RG280m.... but it's notably weaker. There's also the Anbernic RG300X which is decent but also slow. Stepping down in size to the Anbernic RG280v. But even better is the Miyoo Mini v1. My stance is that all of those options fit a niche, but majority of people should simply get the RP2+. It is the fastest Retro Console you can buy, that is still pocketable. Well, there's the new3DS and PS Vita which are barely pocketable and offer a similar performance. Anything like the newer PowKiddy and newer Anbernic don't compete with the RP2+ as they're not pocketable anymore. Just like the AYN Odin Pro, they're more for indoor use rather than outdoors, and you would need a purse to carry them, or a backpack. At which point, don't buy any of them and just get the Valve Steam Deck instead. In fact, the Valve SteamDeck and Retroid Pocket 2+ make the best combination you can buy. Well, besides using a Phone with the Razer JungleCat.
@Kiobao
@Kiobao 2 жыл бұрын
@@siegarettes Yeah same on the miyoo but honestly more because it looks kind've uncomfortable to play on for more than 30 min at a time. It has been tempting though simply due to it's form factor and how much it can do for being that small, so I wouldn't worry about all of its shortcommings because of that since I'd always be willing to take it around and not even debate on it like a retroid pocket or 351mp so I feel like I'd get more value out of it in that way. With the 351P, I feel the only reasons I have been more tempted for the MP over it was the blue ocean color and the idea of premium metal feel. However, I don't think I would get either of them for their price this late into the chips life even though I rather enjoy how they look and they seem more comfortable to play on compared to RP2+, but that's just from videos. Yeah, the neo and the loki are looking great. I'm loving to see how much this handheld market is growing due to how powerful the devices are getting and the sheer options for designs plus the catalogue of games. I feel next year will be a huge year for it all, but the second half of this year, I'm unsure on what we may get besides those 2. as well in the terms of smaller devices.
@Kiobao
@Kiobao 2 жыл бұрын
@@ekinteko You are right with MP not really being a real upgrade over P , mostly was just a screen and ocean blue color preference. The only things really stopping me from getting the RP2+ is that it will take roughly 2 months to ship, and this is coming from people who recently recieved theirs, and that it doesn't seem really comfortable then it's right slider and the design. Makes me wonder what else could be announced in that time if those devices could fit my preference more after seeing how popular RP2+ is or if we are going to have to wait until next year to actually see a real competitor. I'm new to these devices so I'm still learning how they operate haha. The anbernis 300x was something I was rather tempted for instead of the Miyoo mini v2, I love the micro design, I had a gameboy micro, love the buttons that light up, I really hope that anbernic makes an improved version because I would most likely purchase it. 3ds and vita were on that size where I wasn't too interested in carrying it around all that often. More 3ds than vita. Vita was a bit too chonky but still liked having it and it having an amazing sleep function. also the same mindset on the slightly bigger devices that aren't pocketable. Steam deck is by far the king for me especially with my backlog on the portable device but not pocketable line. I wouldn't really even consider the other ones too much. plus I'm sure it will get tons of support and people trying to get more out of it with the community. I guess I should just get the RP2+ and wait for that. Maybe get the miyoo mini V2 in the meantime just to have something as a casual take around for those smaller, weaker games. I'm just always chasing that longterm value and these devices, at this time, aren't quite at that due to RP2+ being the best for its form, but still not QUITE all what I want so most of this stuff is gonna be temp for me until I can get RP2+/351MP form factor with GC/PS2 performance that is smooth and not trying to do a bunch of methods just to get it playable and that's probably a year or 2 away. If the junglecat would work with my pixel 6, that could be tempting. I thought they stopped support on it though. They do have the Kishi V2, I'm not sure how pocketable it is though.
@ekinteko
@ekinteko 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kiobao Long Post Below. If you want any guidance on the below, let me know. I am of the same mindset you have now. I used to want to buy multiple devices, and spend a lot of time on them, and have many ways of doing things. But as I mature I realised Time is limited and Important, so I value Quality highly. I like a device that can do Everything, as long as there is no major drawbacks. The 351MP is nice, only wished the upgrades in that would come to the 351p as that has a better feeling construction (matte plastic) and is very light. However, they're both under-powered as they max out with the N64. So the joysticks are quiet wasted on it. They don't really do the NDS, Dreamcast, or PSP... not well at least. And while I am a big Linux fan, I think a touchscreen and AndroidOS is the superior option. So by default the RP2+ beats all the other options. The Razer Kishi is not pocketable, it collapses to a smaller size but still requires a purse or backpack. The Razer JungleCat on the other hand is. You can take both joycons out, and put them back to back, and together they will slip into one of your jean pockets. Meaning your phone can slip into another pocket, then there's having a wallet and having keys in other pockets. I have contemplated on buying a new phone; the Samsung Galaxy A52s. Spigen even makes their superb Spigen ThinFit case for it, and then gluing the rails on the case. That way I will have a "compatible" JungleCat case, granted you do a good job on the case-surgery. On a phone with 3-year support, with a flagship battery, screen, and performance (and midrange cameras) which is amazing. You could also consider the Samsung S20fe, Redmi Poco F3 Pro, ASUS Zenfone 8, or something else. The RP2+ is a great solution by itself. However, the one I listed above (A52s) is actually the overall best current solution. You get a Phone with no drawbacks, and premium outdoor gaming on top. The previous being using a Samsung S10+ or Samsung Note9 (custom roms), and before that it was to use a PS Vita-2000 hacked, and before that it was using a PSP 3000-model also hacked, and if you go even earlier it was to use a GBA with a Flash Cart. My better idea is to just stick with the RP2+ for now, since I missed out on the initial JungleCat experience (didn't have a compatible phone, it wasn't on sale, and never saw custom cases for it). Next year we are going to get a HUGE upgrade for phones, using TSMC 4nm + Cortex-A730. That's a Second-Generation ARMv9 processor designed by the European Team who has a strong track-record. So I will buy the Razer JungleCat NOW while I still can, and then pair it with potentially the Sony Xperia 5 mk. V which is pricey buy. Then I will pay someone to 3D print for me a Custom Case which will support the JungleCat (and release the files for free). That solution would be worthy upgrade over the S10+ which has been the pinnacle and lasted 3 years. So I'm looking to replicate that.

Although I love to play retro games in this device, I'm slowly getting sick of the controls, recently I played Mario Kart DS and almost ended up with tendinitis lol (at least the game runs really great), not to mention that my left joystick stopped working properly very early when I first got the device, -even though I haven't even touched it at all at that point- my screen now has a line that appears sometimes, -maybe it has to do with the fact that I charged the device with a third party charger and the touch screen went crazy (so don't do that lol)- and I made the mistake of ordering an unit that has painted buttons, so pressing them is extra hard and not precise at all, so until I don't open the console and scrap the paint from the buttons those games where you have to press A and B very rapidly are out of the question, also the d-pad wasn't well made, because if I go to an input test and I press down/up nothing weird happens, but when I'm playing a game and I press down/up then suddenly it is extremely hard not to go down/up diagonally to the left or right at the same time!!

Great overview! Sounds like you might be getting more use out of this than your Analogue Pocket, lol. And that part in the last minute, about the best device being the one that gets you to play, resonated with me. It's easy to get wrapped up in the numerous options. This device isn't my favorite or anything, but it does the job good enough for pick up and play and the battery life really is great. I was curious though how you were emulating n64. I've only tried a handful of games, but even Goldeneye was running well. I use M64Plus FZ Pro (free version is the same but pro has no ads). And if you are looking for different launchers, Reset Collection isnt bad for small collections, it just takes a while to scroll since it lists games in a straight line kind of like the Switch. I'm currently trying Daijisho, and it has more options and flexibility but has a bit of a learning curve.

Yup! On paper the Analogue has this thing beat in controls, compatibility screen etc. but it never mattered because it was such a hassle to pick up and put down. So nice to not think about when or how I'm gonna play something and just play it. I'm emulating N64 the same way, I think it's a matter of both my tastes and what I'm willing to accept in terms of performance. A lot of titles I wanted to play didn't work well at all, or they'd be like Tetris, where they were generally fine, but then would drop frames and inputs every once in a while, which makes a game like that unplayable, personally. tbh I dunno if there's gonna be a frontend that does everything I want, so I'm ok using the stock UI, even if its ugly.

@@lexiconsutopia2654 I'm happy to report that Mario Party 3, pokemon stadium 2, cruisin' world and USA all run at full speed. Just tested each one. The screen's aspect ratio is perfect for N64 and you'll love how Dreamcast runs on this thing. :)

The RP2+ is great for everything up to PlayStation or GameCube. The problem is that it can’t run most GameCube games well and as well as dolphin is buggy and whenever you want to use it as well as it won’t keep your controller settings the same. As well as when you map the buttons on dolphin you cannot exit your emulation anymore.

the gamesir x2 I think? I also tried the razer one and HATED it. having the flexible backing was awful and made it feel like it was gonna snap any time. I did need to buy a thinner case to make my pixel work with the gamesir tho

I like to glide my thumb over the B and Y buttons - This just isn't possible on this device. The buttons are so rigid and pronounced, that you have to lift your thumb to each button and press, rather than just swipe your thumb over them, making it feel awkward and cumbersome. Also my A button sticks into the system and I have to wiggle to back out, which I've heard is somewhat common on this device. Also quite disappointed with the cumbersome UI and how for some systems, you get a load of garbage files alongside your roms that it display in the games list that you can't load, it just makes the UI messy and more difficult to sift through. Really disappointed with this, handheld emulation still isn't where I want it to be.

the average asking price for a google pixel 6 is 600$ US even with discounts in mind your "why even bother" argumenta loses a lot of wind in its sails, not a lot of people can afford that, and the 99$ US asking price of the retroid pocket 2+ is very reasonable for what you get, i know it isn't perfect but they don't advertise it like its perfect, it is what it says on the tin and its a wonderful product for emulation. your argument is technically true, yes. using a google pixel 6 for emulation instead of the retroid picket 2 is a much better experience that can power through every benchmark you throw at it, with the right tools it could probably even emulate ridiculous tasks like ps3 games ... but to say the average consumer SHOULD shell out 600 dollars for it just because its a more powerful device for emulation is like telling people to buy a home to get a nice office space.
