A bit of a note on the Zapper. It does work with the RetroUSB AVS, but you must use an older CRT BVM or PVM with HD SDI support and find a zero lag HDMI to HD SDI converter. I've played many rounds of Duck Hunt with friends this way.

A DE-10 nano, an SDRAM module, and you're all set for the NES, many more 8/16bit consoles, arcade boards, and computers. It's about the same price, even less if you can get academic pricing. No flashcart needed, so definitely is cheaper. MiSTerFPGA is the best system out their that's FPGA for consumers honestly, and will be for some time.

Also, if you find some games just won't work on the AVS, but will on the original NES hardware that's most likely because it's a green tipped PCB which has slightly shorter pins. During the manufacturing process of the AVS there was a mix up and the shorter version of the cartridge connector was used for the final production instead of the longer one. It only affects a small percentage of cartridges, but unfortunately some of them could very well be the best games on the platform. One of my personal favorites, Mega Man 2, is one such game for me. Out of the 600 carts I own only around 14 are like this, but I'd still like a revised cartridge connector for it, which I was promised is on its way in the next 6 months or so... I hope!

videogameobsession hey my Mega Man 2 cart doesn't work on it either. thst was upsetting and I have cleaned it several times. are they supposed to replace people's consoles with this newer chip set you're speaking of?
@videogameobsession
@videogameobsession 7 жыл бұрын
Your best bet is to email them and ask to be notified when the longer cartridge connector is made available. It will be an easy swap as it just plugs into the FPGA main board like a cartridge plugs into the connector. Have you tried this copy of Mega Man 2 on another system? I have come across a game that was just plain dead on all of my NES consoles. Sometimes components just die unfortunately. I also suggest using pink pencil eraser on cartridge pins. It sometimes does wonders for dirty pins and doesn't leave any trace of residue like rubbing alcohol or other liquid based cleaners. Also, I'm not sure if you saw my other post, but there is also an issue with the USB port on the first batch on AVS system where it isn't properly secured to the FPGA board and if any pressure is placed on it the port can easily break right off rendering the entire system useless. Brian at RetroUSB a!so said he'll be sending out a 3D printed piece which will fit around the port to help keep that from happening. Batch #2 AVS systems will have both of these things fixed.
@videogameobsession

On and a quick fix to play Mega Man 2 would be to connect it to a Game Genie and then into the AVS... Not ideal of course, but if you own a GG and are desperate to play MM2, there's a way.

Can someone do me a favor with the Retro AVS? Can you test Monster Party for the NES on it? I bought a copy of it yesterday, it works flawlessly in my legit NES, and my Retro Duo, but will NOT work in my AVS. When inserted into the AVS, the cart logo stays blank/gray and when selected, the screen goes black and the goes back to the main menu. All other games I have tried work properly with it. Only Monster Party has given me trouble. Thanks!

Joe, your RGB modded NES probably does also FCEUX. FCEUX is a popular emulator palette. Tim Worthington put it onto his board. If you like "unsaturated" better you can reprogram the FPGA on Tim's board. This sounds like a pain, but it actually quite user friendly, they made GUIs and stuff to help normal users.

Hey GameSack crew, I love you guys' fine work and dedication at showing those great games and equipment, and I really think you are doing a exceptional job not only on KZbin, but in the whole Internet in what regards "gaming knowledge" if I can call it that. However, one of the few things that I miss on this channel is the lack of coverage of anything from the second generation of videogames (Atari 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, etc.). I really miss those because even that most of its games were lackluster and the best ones on those systems didn't aged really that well, they still symbolize an important era on the market with the game genre experimentation and the try to fit a decent story with a fun gameplay regarding all the system limitations, developing in a great fashion the childhood of many that could grow on the late 70s/early 80s with a (somewhat) full videogame experience on the comfort of your home.

Yeah I know. We want to cover Atari 2600 (and maybe 5200 if possible) Intellivision and Colecovision at some point. He fiddles around when that stuff when he thinks about it which isn't often.

Well i don't know how they managed to replicate the nes hardware 100% and put it on a chip but they surely had decapped the real nes chip set,snan it under a microscope to extract the source code of it to implement it into their FPGA chip,as a result it should also work with castlevania 3 etc,,, The software inside it is magic,as it somehow can turn sprite flicker off,i guess trough overclocking,so now you can play double dragon 3 with a friend without getting confused. My only complain is that it lacks a/v out for old crt tv's and because of this you cannot play duckhunt on it. That it only output 720p doesn't matter as your tv will upscale it to 1080p.

Maybe I'll get one of these even though I already have the Analogue NT (the one with real NES hardware), but for some reason, it doesn't work that good with my Famicom Everdrive even though Analogue promised it to compatible with it. This HD NES venture ended up being pretty expensive for me.

The extra sprites option might cause graphics errors on some games. Some devs took advantage of the hardware limit in order to create certain effects, such as partially hiding a character sprite. There will also still be some flickering in some games, as devs would sometimes intentionally code their own "flicker" so that they have control over exactly how it behaved, rather than leaving the risk of undesired natural results.

I prefer anything I can just play on my computer it just has so much at my finger tips without mucking around on another machine that can only do one thing at a time. The bit about the expansion audio mixing is a bit misleading. Every chip has a different mixing ratio. If you use an adapter to plug expansion carts into an NES, you'll hear MASSIVE differences depending on the game you put in. VRC6 games sound generally ok, but Lagrange Point's audio is super quiet Gimmick!'s 5B is INCREDIBLY loud (it's the loudest expansion chip there is). If there were one default setting, there would be no slider. It's there for a reason.

With regard to the palettes on the newer firmware, I noticed they didn't look like they were supposed to on my Sony display. I then discovered my display was crushing the RGB space to "Limited" and I had to change it to "Full" in order for the palette colors to look correct. When you do this, Unsaturated-V6 looks the best of the lot (in my opinion). YUV-V3 was just a tweaked version of "YUV" which is a palette option in the emulator called "Nestopia". "FCEUX" is the default palette in an emulator called "FCEUX". I don't know where "Original" comes from, and I don't agree that it's meant to be the closest to real colors. All 4 palette options attempt to mimic real colors, and it comes down to a matter of taste (provided your TV is set to full RGB range).

For the price tag, I think it's actually somewhat of a good deal though I can totally see why most would hesitate. I'd ran a quick check and an NES with a Four Score and no RBG modification (with four controllers and four games as well) is about $150. Now, with an RBG mod, that would probably ramp the cost up a good bit. As for the AVS, it not only has all these features (sans the controllers and games) but has a built in Game Genie, a port to enable FDS support, and a native Famicom slot. It's a good price for what it is but I'd still only recommend it to hardcore NES fans.

I bought my AVS in August and definitely like it. It doesn't add any noticeable lag to the HD setup which is important to me, and it should be to you too! One thing that you should be aware of is the extra fragile Mini USB power input. It isn't reinforced to the FPGA board and if any force, even a slight amount, is placed on the top of the USB plug it's quite possible for it to break right off. Brian at RetroUSB said new revisions of the AVS should be fixed, but those of us who bought it at launch are still waiting on a fix to keep this from breaking.

Talking about the high pricing for the AVS while showing footage of Little Samson. That made me laugh.

I got my kid brother an NES 2 Christmases ago, and an Everdrive last year only to find out he broke the NES 😣 I'm in the market for something like this, but love to know more about the $50 8bit HD NES clone.

The FM processing is cool, but I am confused why you would want to mix the levels with the original audio? Like doesn't the FM audio sound much better or is it only complimentary to the original? How does a original NES or Famicom handle it?

If it had an RGB output so I could connect it to my PVM, then the AVS would easily be my primary choice for an NES system. Though as of now, it's my personal recommendation for those who want an NES system to play on their TV, even above the Hi-Def NES mod. As for me though, I'll stick to my personal Sharp Twin Famicom, and continue to fix the various issues that the system suffers from (mostly related to audio).

Just a heads up, if the Famicom slot drives you guys THAT crazy, the EverDrive N8 (NES one) will play Famicom disk and cart roms without add-ons or anything.

11:28 - Except for the fact that 4 player Anticipation only uses two controllers. Contrary to a lot of sources on the interwebs. Believe me I really wanted to play with 4 controllers (thinking we could have an 8 player match) but was sadly mistaken.

don't get me wrong from my other posts. I really appreciated this video. It really made me appreciate my computer, the free capture software, and the 5$ (after shipping) authentic NES usb controller. Heck, the only thing I could appreciate more is one of those raspberry pi cpu's and I've got myself a avs for only 40$ including said usb nes controllers.. witih all the scaling needs I could want. Let's be honest. AVS won't do light gun games.. neither would the pi.. ;D

Everything I've seen and heard about this console tells me that it's fantastic. The biggest criticism is the fact that it doesn't do 1080p, and there are some really minor criticisms regarding the Famicom slot. Besides the issue you guys brought up, some people also don't like the fact that you can't close the lid when playing a Famicom game. One other issue with the thing that I have(but that I never hear brought up) is that it's a really fucking ugly console. It's only a minor complaint, but damn, couldn't they have come up with a better design?

Actually, most Famicom pirate carts in the 90s came from Taiwan. They have also made disk copiers for Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, but ironically, Nintendo is now selling games officially in Taiwan. And just so you know: Taiwan is a country.

also isn't FPGA the same thing as the systems-on-a-chip? or similar? How else would you achieve a "system on a chip" without an FPGA or CPLD type technology (ie simulating a more complicated processor through logic gates or however they work)
@AxiomofDiscord
@AxiomofDiscord 7 жыл бұрын
I want them to have an FPGA system one day with clip on front ports and slide in carts that each are there own system. So one box you can make into any system that you buy the expansion cart for and ports to plug controllers into. This is if and only if you don't have at that time just an FPGA that could be reprogrammed on the fly in a decent amount of time from software stored somewhere on the system so you could switch to and back from different configuration. That along with flashcarts might preserve this experience of old for a very long time. I do wonder if they could ever make a IR light gun that might work with the system likely would take a whole other subsystem to translate the data to something that the NES clone would even understand though.

So, within the first minute and a half, is it safe to assume it DOES output games in 4:3 ratio? And if so, is there also the option for 16:9? Myself, all I care about is 4:3, but I figure it doesn't hurt to have options....

Mind if I ask, what is the big deal with trying to play retro games in HD? If anything, it makes the games look worse as the HD graphics make the errors more noticeable. Besides, I always preferred Composite video anyway, because it gives me that feeling of being a kid in the 90's again, what with the white text looking like it has a rainbow in it, and all that.

Shame the NES wasn't popular in the UK. It's damn near impossible to find NES carts, and where you do, they're expensive as hell. Same with most 80s and early 90s consoles.

Game Sack should make a Framemeister video with a review, comparisons between hooked directly onto the TV x through Framemeister, etc. Such a great device for retrogaming would make a great and very useful video.

I’m watching this six years from this video in 2023 and I have to say that they did upgrade this and now it’s implantable and all you have to do is bend over and stick the cartridge up your bum to get it to play on my video contacts. But the only bummer is when you get dust in the slot, you have to have someone else blow it out otherwise you are fucked lol

Joe or Dave!! I got a problem I was wondering if you could give me some advice, I have a question I was wondering if you could possibly help with. You see, I have an American NTSC PS1. I want to play some PAL import PS1 games on it. I found something called PS-X-Change 2 on Ebay and it says it allows you to play imports games with it. Will this let me play PAL games on my american NTSC PS1 on an American NTSC old school Sony WEGA CRT? I keep hearing differing stories. Some say a PAL game runs at 50Hz and American tv's since they run at 60Hz won't be able to display the PAL game properly. Some say it does indeed work. Do any of you own any PAL games and if so how do you play them on your tv's? I am worried I will have to buy a PAL tv or something.
