I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but this film is coming out 20 years after "Troy". In the odyssey, Odysseus took 20 years to return from Troy to Ithaca. So if Sean Bean had left Troy at the end of that film, he's be getting back to Ithaca about now. So I'm choosing to believe that this is in the same "ancient greek legends" cinematic universe.

Excellent! I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this. Well done.

I nearly got this story. Before 9/11.. I was physically hunted by my family to take to the recruiter’s. It was like everybody was under a damn spell to put me in… they finally got me… 1 year later was 9/11… I spent the next 10 years going back and forth to Iraq with the LCACs. Absolutely blessed over there. But after those 10 years were over… my curse began… I’m still trying to get back to my family but she wasn’t as classy as the queen in the story. And the kid was too young to remember anything special. Over time I just turned into the bad guy. Greek tragedy.

Homer stitched together stories handed down by word of mouth storytelling through the Greek Dark Ages until he got them in ~800 BCE. The Odyssey is Homer choosing to stitch together those stories into one. It's fairly an eclectic mix of stories for Hollywood to make. I really hope we find another trove of manuscripts that have some of the stories that were lost.

This looks absolutely amazing - when artists take a story from mythology and make it so real that you can see, smell, and even taste it - then it becomes brilliant storytelling. Homer's Odyssey, Book 1, lines 57-60, 65-68 "I saw him once on an island, weeping live warm tears in the nymph Calypso’s house - she holds him there by force. He has no way to voyage home to his own native land, no trim ships in reach, no crew to ply the oars and send him scudding over the sea’s broad back." Homer's Odyssey, Book 4, lines 626-630 Odysseus was a prisoner in Calypso's island, spent his time weeping, it took divine intervention to be released. The advantage that films like this have is that 'modern audiences' are too ignorant to have sought out the better versions of these stories. 1954's Odysseus with Kirk Douglas is a rousing adventure with a real Movie Star. It's been restored in it's original Widescreen and is visually gorgeous. This looks like a poor man's Odyssey. Don't get me started on how Gladiator was just an inferior ripoff of the original Spartacus. Again, a much better film.

I've been intrigued for years with our Western world's fascination with such a loser and monster as Odysseus. A liar, cheat, murderer, rapist, and one of the worst leaders of men ever described in all of literature is seen by far too many readers, professors, and now filmmakers and moviegoers, as a genuine hero. His participation in the war was opportunistic. His actions were cunning and deceitful most of the time, and he could always count on Athena to tip the scales in his favor. His trip to return to Ithaca was marked by his failures. He unnecessarily attacked the Kikones when the men of that tribe were out of their dwellings, so the Greeks killed women and children and took even more slaves, even thought their ships were full of booty from Troy, including women and children slaves. The Greeks also went onto rape the just-captured women right on the beach because why not, since those men were all rapists led by a rapist. Caught in the act by the male Kikones, the Greeks had to flee. Thrown off course by winds they end up prisoners of Polyphemus, the cyclops. Odysseus devices a stratagem to escape and some of his men survive, but he can't help being who he is and boasts of his escape to the blinded giant, who sets Poseidon against the Greeks. When Odysseus is given a bag with the winds but not the west wind, his men, greedy pirates just like their leader, open the bag and disperse the winds. Once Odysseus is back in Ithaca as the only survivor of his "odyssey," he manages to murder all the sons of the most important families of his kingdom. He makes a murderer of his son Telemachus, since the boy spears one of the suitors in the back. Both of them murder the serving maids whose only crime was to serve the suitors as they were supposed to do. THAT is our hero Odysseus. He's so hated in his own island that the populace is about to tear him to pieces when Athena, of course, intervenes again and, deus ex-machina, tele-transports him away, to be a wanderer and never return to Ithaca. Liar, cheat, rapist, thief, pirate, murderer, bad husband, worse father, worst leader. Reminds me of a recent "leader," a "hero" to many. Come to think of it, I believe I can see now why this detestable character has been so elevated in the Western world for so long: apparently, we tend to worship absolute crap and to give them leadership positions, only to wonder later how could things have ended up so badly.
