Chicago had/has this issue, they completely ignore it and hide it. Last summer, we had so many bodies found in one week in the water. Then, exactly a year ago, they found one in the water literally in my alley. I used the citizen app while I lived there and it said it was less than 400ft away. Scary to think I used to sit on the rocks where this man was found. I had to leave fast. My heart goes out to the victims

Rivers move very fast sometimes. It's impossible to know that nothing has moved in a river. And water is cold especially during the winter but it's also cold during the fall and spring. It's just cold enough to slow decomposition by a few days maybe even weeks. And during winter could be months that go by before a body even starts to unfreeze and decompose. While I do acknowledge that there seems to be a trend with a lot of the deaths that people attribute to the smiley face killers, I have a really hard time believing that there is a widespread group of people who are doing this in an organized manner. Large groups and networks of people require methods of communication that often leave traces and footprints in some way, shape or form. Even if police weren't able to uncover the entirety of the operation, it wouldn't make sense to assume that nobody in this entire supposedly huge operation hasn't gotten caught doing something illegal yet and hasn't had their devices searched. Law enforcement knows about pretty much every gang or organized crime group or cult in America at this point because of the freedom of information act and the other NSA bullshit that was rolled out after 9/11, so I don't think it would be possible for a group to be specifically targeting people on a mass scale and having specific signs and rules and things like that without them having left some type of Trace somewhere over the entire time that this has supposedly been going on. I do believe that there may be a serial killer or a couple or small group of less than five people who may have originally been doing the smiley face murders, and now they have copycats across the country. It makes more sense to me that this would be either copycats or just a single person or a single small group of two to three people rather than a huge organize syndicate. Though I really do think that some of these things are just misattributed or copycats
@BBB-to4cc Жыл бұрын
I agree with you. But when you think about it, what’s the difference between a smiley face killer and someone who is copying it? They’re all smiley face killers. The main issue is that these are considered drownings and not investigated, whether they’re the official smiley face killers or not. I feel like if it was all women honestly that wouldn’t happen. I feel like since it’s grown men with alcohol in their system, they don’t care. They deserve justice. Also I think a couple of them maybe did accidentally drown like the one who had a homeless witness, but definitely no way all of them did

Black street gangs? You act like there has to be a sophisticated conspiracy, when it only takes 3 men to start a larceny gang.

@jessl1934 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you and the first thing that came to mind was that the best explanation isn't that it's a network but rather that it's copycat killers. Another, somewhat less plausible explanation (although more plausible than a coordinated network doing this imo), is that it's less of a network and more of a franchise. It isn't hard to imagine that the smiley face killings aren't conducted by an individual but by two or more people, especially given that there's strong indications of abduction and some indications of torture. There are people who share a taste for these acts. Accomplices could have learned the techniques of the original killer, or the techniques could have been developed in collaboration, before the accomplices moved to different areas to carry on with the killings elsewhere which would give the impression of a network existing when it's just the replication of strategy and methods.

Yeah, this is why I don't take Smily Face Killer theories seriously. The idea that an organized syndicate of serial killers is targeting young men in bars without leaving any evidence is insane. Add in the incredibly dumb assumption that these killers are marking their sites with smiley face graffiti (one of the most common symbols to make in the world) makes the entire community laughable. If people want this theory to be taken seriously, ditch the Smiley Face angle and the whole organized element. Then we can get to actual cases where drownings are suspicious rather than obvious accidents.
@sabrinatscha2554 Жыл бұрын
That makes way more sense than some organized group/serial killer on the loose. Kind of like the thing with all the hikers disappearing from NorCal wilderness, which is currently so flush with cartel grow-ops, that the rivers are turning blue from all the fertilizer runoff. They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and saw something that wasn’t meant for their eyes…. and then we've got David Paulides, talking about yetis and aliens. SMDH.

@Necron990 Agreed. Maybe I missed this, I was busy while listening, but I didn’t hear him say anything about the fly eggs and maggots in the first man’s genitalia. I’ve heard of this victim’s story before, and that was always haunting to me. They were house flies, not a fly you would find out on the water where his body was discovered. So that, along with the other information proves that he was murdered. But also, that he had been kept alive and tortured before his body was disposed of and discovered. I personally don’t believe that all of the victims of this supposed serial killer actually met foul play. Some of them were just accidental drownings. They shouldn’t be included. But this first man certainly was targeted, taken, tortured and murdered by someone, if not more than one person. Terrifying to try to guess what he went through! That poor man. I hope one day they find his killer(s) and he gets some justice.

the things about the smiley face theory thay always made me :/ is the detectives underestimate how easy it is to drown... even when you're sober. intoxicaton, even "two beers" affects your body in many ways, like you don't react as fast. recently in polish city Międzyzdroje two drunk dudes tresspassed, went to a beach and almost drowned in knee deep water. one of them fell down while walking in the water, the second guy tried to help him, they struggled so much to get out of the water... the only reason they were saved is that beach had cctv. security saw them and sent help. there are soooo many myths regarding drowning, like people don't really make a sound, they can get hit by debris or pulled by a current. the more you panic and struggle the more water gets into your lungs and your chances for survival plummet. i believe that everyone should be taught how to spot a drowning person and also know how to prevent it whole swimming. hell even a leg cramp can be very dangerous. water is not your friend. in my hometown there's a large river with strong current. it pulls you in immediately, it's so bad there's a centuries old lore on drowned people, stories created just to scare people off and i guess prevent deaths.

Growing up near Chicago, I can say it's an uncomfortable joke that you'll end up in the river if you're not careful with just how many get found around Chicago, Rockford and the surrounding small areas. I grew up in Loves Park, under Rockford, and the amount of bodies pulled out of the Rock River was staggering, but unsuprising when you've grown up around it. @@Sigh328 For Rockford it's 100% the amount of people killing each other. They will dump bodies in the river to get rid of them, and the cops don't really look super well in the river. I mean - a lot of this COULD be coincidence, even if lots of them are not accidental drownings. Many of these incidents could be actual murders - but unrelated murders. Lots of people in big cities get murdered, and the obvious way to get rid of a body would be to dump it in the river. Chicago and NYC have plenty of rivers, and criminals have been dumping bodies in these rivers for so long, it's become a cliche. (In NY the phrase "end up in the East River" is basically a euphemism for "getting murdered"). And we'd need to know how common the "smiley face" graffiti pattern is in general, before we can say that it's particularly unlikely to find one within the vicinity of a crime scene. (The one that was purposely place on a grave stone of a victim could be a hoax from someone who read about this phenomenon.) But I have to admit, the repeating pattern of teenage/20-something young white educated males (a demographic that is very unlikely to be murdered) does admittedly seem like something more organized or coordinated may be happening. It's very difficult to say.

The main reason this line of thinking is useless is that it's completely unfalsifiable. Low-effort graffiti like that is *everywhere.* Every drowning victim discovered is going to be a non-vast distance from a painted smiley. Since what counts as "close," "nearby," or "in the vicinity" is completely subjective, what can we then conclude? That every drowned person is not only a victim of homicide, but the victim of the same individual/gang as well? Even if some of these people did meet with foul play (which is entirely possible), this line of so-called "investigation" leads nowhere.

The Riley Strain case got me thinking about the Smiley Face Killers “theory”. From all we know so far, he fits the profile and the circumstances are the same/similar to the many other cases… The problem with a lot of the cases is they were never investigated as homicides… Notice how most all of the cases are of college-aged white men which, to me, indicates hate crimes. I have no doubt that the killers are very much still active but may not be leaving their trademark smiley face near the location of the bodies. These stories are very chilling. My heart goes out to the families of all the victims and to all who have lost someone under these types of mysterious circumstances. I hope they all get answers and some closure. If Welzien made it to the hotel, then vanished? It can be surmised that the killers were staying at the same hotel? They intercepted him as he was heading to his room after his friend dropped him in the lobby, perhaps? Perhaps the killers had a room on the same floor and waited for Welzien? As he staggered toward his room? Perhaps the killers followed him or his clique to the bar? Someone drugged him, then headed back to the hotel knowing Welzien would ask to be dropped off? Due to illness? Hmmm? The killers were in that bar the same night, my guess? Also, it can explain the smiley face graffiti in the area of the hotel, which supports my theory of the killers staying at the hotel
@hooverkinz Жыл бұрын
Great video as always. I have a hard time buying the theory, at least as vast as others claim (across many other states) as smiley faces are such a common graffiti tag, and it’s easier for a family to cope when they have someone to flame for the loss of their child/brother etc… the sad truth is young men are mostly likely to over drink and do risky things while they’re very drunk. We also don’t know much about decomposition in water, and can vary extremely based on certain factors, even the amount of oxygen in the water. I believe there may be some foul play, especially when it’s multiple cases in the same area, but across the whole of the US… I just don’t buy it but I understand families wanting some outside force to blame and explain it. This phenomenon seems like it’s responsible for some of the missing 411 cases being classified as such as families just can’t handle the knowledge of their family member simply made a tragic mistake. Regardless every case is a tragedy and my heart goes out for the victims and all the loved ones affected

What I think is happening is the original ones were a coincidence but the ones that started in Chicago could of been a copy cat or just a killer that was in the area that decided that was the best way to kill or how they wanted to kill.

Like numerous times before, the cops cant get over that thought that not only could something like this be possible but that it could be happening right under their nose. They act like its a bigger crime to acknowledge the possibility of crime on their watch than it is to actually commit the crime.

As a former graffiti artist, I can tell you: you don't buy spray paint to just randomly draw smiley faces everywhere you go; you tag yourself and your friends so other artists would notice you. Even if so, by now they should know if a local artist is known for drawing smiley faces instead of writing it's tag. It is really that easy. If there was an artist whose tag was something like "Smiley", "Smile", "Happy", etc. and said artist used to draw a smiley face instead of writing it's full tag then the FBI was right, if not, they choose to ignore evidence

In the 1990s it was (and somewhat still is) fairly common to see smiley faces painted on the side of barns and old abandoned buildings in rural Wisconsin. Farmer Joe is not a graffiti artist, nor a serial killer.

There’s a couple of cases in Brooklyn near a famous rave spot in an industrial area that has had several murders where the bodies were found in a creek
