To me, the Nazgul are the pinnacle of what a horror villain should be. They are an unstoppable force of evil that can only be driven away in very specific circumstances. They are driven by a will of pure malice. Their very presence inspires fear, the sound of their screech alone caused the armies of Gondor to cower. And worse, unlike most horror villains, they do not always simply kill their victim. If you are stabbed by a Morgul blade you become like them, forever bound to the torment of undeath.

Those weren't actually Elvish blades, they were Arnorian blades, and most of those and the ways of making them were lost when Arnor fell to Angmar.

-***** "Fall" doesn't mean "die", it means "downfall", which means "loss of power, prosperity or status". Glorfindel's prophecy didn't state the Witch-King would die, but fall. Mary's blade was what broke the Witch-King's spell and is thus what caused his downfall. The Witch-King didn't die, his body died. His spirit fled to Mordor and would've been re-embodied had the ring not been destroyed.

"Those who used the Nine Rings became mighty in their day, kings, sorcerers, and warriors of old. They obtained glory and great wealth, yet it turned to their undoing. They had, as it seemed, unending life, yet life became unendurable to them. They could walk, if they would, unseen by all eyes in this world beneath the sun, and they could see things in worlds invisible to mortal men; but too often they beheld only the phantoms and delusions of Sauron. And one by one, sooner or later, according to their native strength and to the good or evil of their wills in the beginning, they fell under the ring that they bore and under the domination of the One, which was Sauron's. And they became for ever invisible save to him that wore the Ruling Ring, and they entered into the realm of shadows. The Nazgûl were they, the Ringwraiths, the Enemy's most terrible servants' darkness went with them, and they cried with the voices of death."

A Ringwraith is the individual Black Hood, a servant of Mordor. The Nazgul are the Nine, the collection of them. A fell beast is the thing they ride.
@JS-ig8oh10 жыл бұрын
Actually, Nazgul means Ringwraith. "Nazgul" is both the singular and plural, but you can have one Nazgul, one Ringwraith, or five Nazgul, five Ringwraiths, or all nine Nazgul, nine Rinwraiths. "Nazgul" does not necessarily refer to them collectively, and "Ringwraith" does not necessarily refer to them singularly. But yes, the Fell Beasts are the winged creatures that they ride.

Khamûl: "Shiii-re... Baaa-giiins..." It's probably my favorite scene of the movies together with when the Nazgûl to Bree and enter their room and mercilessly stab the Hobbits' former beds. These scenes really reveal how terrifying it is to be hunted by the Ringwraiths. You see how much fear is as much of a weapon to them than their blades. They're some of the most formidable and charismatic villains in the history of litterature and cinema.
@Ninjat1262 жыл бұрын
The film's didn't get everything right, but the Nazgûl were pretty damn good. You've got to get the right balance between "insubstantial spectres of death" and "arrogant kings dragged into inhuman evil," and I think they mostly nailed it. It would have been easy to just make them spooky ghosts, like what was done in The Hobbit films, but I think the extra physicality of having human actors really added to the menace. I remember watching the films as a child, before I'd read the books. I remember not quite being able to tell whether they were human or monstrous at first, until Frodo looks at them while wearing the ring.
@philipped.r.63852 жыл бұрын
@@Ninjat126 I fully agree with you. I much prefer them to be spirits trapped in real armor and wielding real weapons. The menace they project become much more immediate this way. I've always felt that immaterial spirits are too abstract to be really frightening. By having a physical vessel, it makes them more real to me. That and I've always loved black knights in fantasy settings, so the Nazgûl really speak to me in this form.

Man these guys were so intimidating, I thought that they were pretty cool until that one scene outside minas morgul, you are already on edge from Frodo walking onto the bridge and they haunting statues but then the witch king screeches and they go from intimidating and cool to f*cking terrifying that scene will never loose it’s impact. You couldn’t imagine how terrified Sam and Frodo must have been at that moment.

Actually while it was very few men, they had much assistance, which they also cut out of the non-extended edition of the movie. In the books, there are huorns, the ents which have gone treeish. They can move lightning fast, when they do actually move. Gandalf comes with the riders of Rohan scares the Uruk-Hai, most of them are still alive though, they run into what seems to be a regular forest, it's actually the huorns, the Uruk-Hai bodies are never seen again.

Count the swords, 9 swords. It's easy to be confused because some of the raised arms look like hoods. And some people think it's 8 because one of the nazgul is hidden slightly and you can only see his sword and the top of his hood.

I think P J should do the fall of Arnor as well... And do like 3 movies of the Witch King taking, Cardolan, Rhudaur and Arthedain with Arthedain having the main big battle like Return of the King and Battle of the Five Armies!

When Arnor fall, the Nine were already Nazgul.
@modernwarfare900911 жыл бұрын
I did a little research on the topic, and I found that most think the only one capable of standing against the Nazgul is the Elven lord Glorfindel. They point to the fact that Gandalf (the most powerful of the fellowship) is on roughly equal terms with the Witch King of Angmar. Another point was the Nine's "black breath" which would have destroyed any weapon the fellowship used against them, and poisoned the weapon's wielder.
