Hey Rudy! I use to manage a shop for 3 years, What people liked was a good shop front,good parking. In house specials for local restaurants for delivery. the people loved having singles available and in open sight, a dedicated menu for events, loyalty program and in house lockers with a annul or by-quarterly fee. Drinks and snacks in stock and longer hours on the Thursday through Sunday nights. I hoped this help!

I would like to see all marketing processes such as grand opening advertising. Seeing the negotiation process with the landlord as well as companies you buy your product from would be cool too. (understandable if this is not possible) Even the hiring process could make for some good entertainment.

i was into MTG pretty well back in the day, however i think the primary thing which kept my stays brief at actual card stores was the "clicky" feeling that the regulars gave off to anyone they didn't recognize coming in. they weren't specifically _rude_ or anything, but they of course had no need to do anything more than look up for a sec at the door-ding, see it wasn't their friend, and continue exclusively talking to their _other_ friends. this DOES affect the mood of incoming ppl, 'cause they get this *instant* feeling of being shunned just for walking in! the shop personnel generally spent the most efficient time possible serving the "randoms" who'd come in, giving off the feeling that any possible indecision on the part of the potential customer was a burden to their precious time due to them standing near perfectly in silence as one would "gaze at the wares" (i.e. nice rares or whatever), then after sale or answering questions they'd prove you really _were_ a burden by promptly going to the back, or perhaps continuing their conversation with the huddled regulars by the playing tables. unless they're coming to the shop 'cause their friend invited them, these circumstances lead to a near-impenetrable aire for newcomers to *want* to become regulars themselves. are you able to somehow fix this situation where *everyone* from ALL races, genders, cultures, sexualities, religions (or not), experience levels, geek 'concentrations', FINANCIAL situations, etc. can *implicitly* feel perfectly comfortable and welcome to hang out, buy some cards as they're able, and play at your store and have FUN?!

Love the idea. Video ideas: 1. How did you find this place? Why did you pick this location? What factors are you considering in your decision. 2. What did you negotiate in your rental agreement? Do a complete breakdown of expected costs (recurring and up front). 3. Coverage of up front costs. Include furniture, inventory, inventory management. 4. Hiring. Who, how, when, how much? What role do you play in the first couple months of a new branch? 5. Marketing. How are you bringing customers in? How are you handling price support for events? Are you using a rewards program? 6. Review. How did your expected costs match up with actual. probably missing some steps there. Good rough draft.

I'm totally new to this concept! Never saw the old videos, so am REALLY excited for this! Things I'd like to see would be, how to set up/display your store, how you place orders/manage your books (like how you decide how much product you want), when you get deliveries in, how you decide what stock you want/need, running events and keeping regulars. Man this is gonna be awesome! From Blank to BANK!

From someone who worked at a card shop that failed miserably - I'd love to see how you maintain a net profit once you saturate your regulars with product. We had plenty of people coming in and out, but the product just didn't sell once everyone finished their decks, armies, etc. We were starved until the next big magic release, and we're forced to sell singles online to try and close the gap between release sales. Thoughts?

Thanks bro! Something's I'd like to see but may not be in some cases filmable: First establishing financing (let's talk numbers), establishing the lease, setting up the physical layout of the shop (what goes where and why), establishing relationships with suppliers, inventory requirements, staffing and interviewing the employees, establishing a website and online vending, marketing the shop, what software you use to control your inventory and keep track of demand, how you deter store theft, going to cons, sponsoring players, getting your store uniforms made, getting your store insignia/brand made. Cheers man, keep it up!

Tedurbin202 I disagree entirely. I live somewhere with both extremes, leaning more on the cold, and I'd take negative 15 degrees over 95 degrees any day. Nothing you can do about hot weather but be hot and miserable. You can always wear more layers for the cold

+newslime That's fine you disagree, but I live in Maryland, which goes to both extremes as well (it's below 30 tonight, and it was above 60 just yesterday), so I'm not just pulling people's legs when I say that when "it's too cold, I'd rather it be really hot, and when it's too hot, I'd rather it be really cool." This is just my experience, but I doubt I'm the only one who's ever felt this way.

Super excited to see this series man. What would you even use that front triangular area for though? Seems like it's wasted pace for a card shop. The only thing I can think of to put in there would be those 25 cent candy machines but I'm guessing those can't make a ton of $. Do they normally let you knock down walls etc.? You should have a contest and let chat or your patrions name the store.

nebulamask81 It'd be a lobby, obviously. Tournament sign-ups, pre-orders, card orders, card trade-ins, and then yeah maybe novelty items like stickers, candy, figures, maybe some deck boxes, sleeves, dice, playmats, etc etc.
@nebulamask81
@nebulamask81 7 жыл бұрын
Is there really that much use for a small lobby in a card shop though? Wouldn't the space be better if it was open and you could just use it for whatever instead of being limited to sign-ups? I would think you would want to do things like pre-orders, tradeins, and the buying/selling of stuff at the counter which would be behind that in the main store. It seems to me that putting anything for sale there would be a bad idea just because there are physical barriers there and that might encourage theft. It would be harder for employees to pay attention to a separate area like that where some one could easily pocket something. Even if they saw, it's doubtful that the employees could get to some one fast enough before they would be able to take off with merchandise. Sure it might only be dice and such, but card shops do attract kids... and kids are stupid some times. It's just something I don't think you would want to deal with.

I just put the cash register out there and all the magic packs behind it...things like dice and what not. Have all the singles in binders behind the register too and maybe some chairs so people could look through the binders. Then you just make the entire other room all tables. Find a place to put a cooler and then get a buncha candy and snacks.

Rudy, awesome idea, but one thing though, you should back up and start even before showing the location and explain the process of choosing a location, what homework you need to do before choosing your place. Will the place see the traffic it needs to stay in business? or How long did the last business last there and why they are gone?

Yes, there are a lot of steps in opening a LGS, the planning stages specifically, that I think would be cool to know - not just for those who want to go about that path, but for those who are just curious, and want to know what goes into creating a business like this.

THIS. Should back up and show the factors involved in the decision of this location, including what other gamestores are nearby, what their Magic or Pokemon presence is, etc. This location looks like more of an office park than a retail location, and there looks to be very little drive-by traffic or customers that would be walking/driving by looking for retail stores.
@Chille0

was totally wondering these exact same things myself. i have to assume it would easy to have failed already at this step if you chose a terrible location with no demand for a card store, i wonder what his thought process was for this specific location

I miss CSL so much. It's really sad how things went down. Kevin just got too obsessed with KZbin subs and revenue and went crazy, wasting thousands of dollars opening old sealed product and pushing out like 10 videos a day of openings. When his channel didn't grow as a result of that, he just shut everything down.

This is a fantastic idea for a weekly or bi-weekly series. Would love to see this side of the MTG business. People always talk big about opening their own "card shop" but I would imagine they fail even more often and faster than restaurants do. I would love to see some commentary during the videos about what pitfalls to avoid and what is needed to make a shop not only survive, but thrive. Look forward to seeing more of these videos!

DUDE I am so ready for this. There's a location I want to put a card shop in. its steps away from a main street in my town, it'd be sandwiched next to two food places so peeps can get their grubs on when doing prereleases or FNMs and its in the eyeshot of a Toys R Us so we can maybe fishnet suckers who were already primed to spend money on plastic bullshit. I am a broke ass motherfucker who works at Walmart though. I understand a business owns you, not the other way around, but I have the vision, I just don't know the way. So I am super hyped for this future series. YES!!! So one thing I think you might want to do another preliminary video on, is business loans. How does a broke SOB go from having nothing to being able to afford to open a business?

I dug the visitors and generally just seeing how things run behind the scenes. How they moved such large quantities of product, stuff like that. As for you showing a store launch from scratch, I'd love to see how you acquire your fixtures and decorate, how you interview/hire employees, how you set up your inventory management system, how you drum up your initial business, and how long the whole thing takes.

Smoke MassTree not at all. I live in falls about 3 feet away from Kevin's store. 2 things happened. 1) Aaron's now ex wife was a bitch (the girl with the glasses in the video intro) and drove a lot of the regulars from the store. 2) Kevin stopped play magic and didn't show much interest in it at all anymore. He had product, plenty of it; but it's not good for customers to show up and not have direction. 3) Biggest of all... customer service suuuuucckkkkeeeddddd. it's a lot better now, but customer service was awful for the longest time. You'd go in to get cards, and it'd take maybe 10 minutes just to get singles, cause everyone would dick around.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! I already loved the channel, but this series will have me checking in daily. I would love to see you implement (at the beginning of the episode's) and edited in an "agenda" or a sort of bullet-list that talks about some basic information about what you are going to be doing that episode. Either that, or maybe like a part at the end that says what you'll be tackling in the following episode; a really odd request, I'm sure, but just so I know what I am looking forward to. This new series will likely draw me out of doing homework, so... kudos to you! :D GG
