The problem with translucent that it won't be translucent for long due to scratches, dust, abrasions, etc. Unless it's some new super high tech new polymer that is 100% scratch resistent, I would steer clear of the clear top!

The mk8 isn't just a keyboard. It's a work of art based on a timeless tradition of electric pianos. I know that because we are all listening to this through youtube's compression, we are not hearing what YOU heard there at the Rhodes factory, but still, it sounds incredibly WARM and FAT!!!! There's nothing else like this. Truly something special in it's own category. I'd go with the clear transparent top with the woodgrain bottom.

I just felt compelled to wish Dan every success with this venture and give him a big thumbs up for all his help and support he’s offered Rhodes players. He’s gone above and beyond many times with my instruments, often for no fee. He’s an example of what you can do if you stay with it and work hard. Great to see someone’s passion become a business, particularly as it means the Rhodes legacy lives on. If anyone wants a Rhodes, I reckon you’re in the safest place to buy one. Thanks Dan. Rod 😀

I absolutely love that they have done this. Not decided a price point and nearest competitors, just decided to make sure there is literally no competition. That it's made in England and most parts are made locally (bar the keys) is incredible. People bemoaning the price should probably go look at the price of good real piano's - big studio's will have a piano that is worth many times this, or if 'just' an upright, 1.5 x the price of this. Sometimes you got to accept there are beautiful things which you cannot afford! I was impressed they used analogue circuitry - seems right in an electromechanical instrument. My exact thought was 'they could have used a $100 DSP board'...but then he DID mention the next version of firmware... Where is THAT going?

I don't know why... but I never realized that for Rhodes... "Electric Piano" actually meant they built a portable piano that's electrified in the same way as how an Electric Guitar is an electrified guitar... I guess part of it is that I haven't really had a chance to see the guts of one in person and never really touched one myself. Like with Adam Savage on Tested. It's just so fun to get the seconhand excitement of following someone who genuinely is excited to be seeing and touch what he is seeing and touching... and hearing.
@Doctormix3 жыл бұрын

@TheLarryBrown3 жыл бұрын
Congrats. So funny to constantly have to correct people when they call it "an electronic piano" and you have to tell them "Electric! Not electronic." Duuuuuh, I don't see a difference. Your explanation......sort of, but not really. Your synopsis is more fitting to the Yamaha Electric grand. That's an actual portable grand piano that then uses something similar to guitar pickups to take the vibrations out for amplification. Yes the Rhodes uses something similar to guitar pickups, but from there on out it's different than a piano. Principally because instead of piano strings, the Rhodes uses little tuning forks (rods, actually), and that gives it the distinctive sound, totally different than a piano. Also the hammers are rubber rather than felt, and the action is plastic rather than wood, and the escapement mechanism is simpler than in a piano, I'm not sure why they can get away with that.
@jmalmsten3 жыл бұрын
@@TheLarryBrown To the Philistines like me. The distincion between using strings versus rods goes beyond my classifications. I'm thinking more broadly that I never thought that there was a giant mechanical source to the sounds. When all the competitors I've heard have been emulating the Electric Piano withpurely synth tech from the start. Oh and also. If it gets the sound the users want. I see no reason why using rods instead of strings would be an issue to "get away with". :)
@TheLarryBrown3 жыл бұрын
@@jmalmstenI meant "get away with" a simpler escapement mechanism. As far as "getting the sound the user wants," I think that was a big stroke of luck rather than design. Harold Rhodes wanted something that would stay in tune in spite of a lot of knocking about, and he came up with the rods (they're actually called tines...I don't know why.) I don't know if he envisioned allowing in the field tuning or not, the final product was a little spring on each rod that can be adjusted for tuning. The Wurlitzer Electric piano is way difficult to tune, you have to either solder on extra mass or else use a file to file mass off. It just so happened that the tines gave off a beautiful sound that conquered the world, but I don't think Harold chose them for that reason nor realized how profound that sound woukd become. The Rhodes sound is similar to the "celeste" used in "The dance of the sugarplum faires" in "The Nutcracker Suite." Let me go look up how that works..... Eh...seems more like a xylophone bar.

Yes you can get a quality Rhodes sound from a virtual instrument. This is insanly cool, but I'm not quite shure, if I would like it in person. The wobbely feel and slight detune seem to be a big part of a rhodes to me - At least for my mk2, compared to a sampler. A Version with a very slight and randomized detuning mitght be a nice option. They should also think about adding a stereo chorus (e.g. dimension d) and producing the effects panels and amp as retrofit for mk1 and mk2 models, since those seem to be cool and it would turn down manufacturing cost.

I mean, you can get an old stand up piano basically for free when people chuck them out. Or you can get a Steinway for 150k, and Steinway sustains themselves just fine. For a handcrafted, meticulously measured instrument that must have taken hours upon hours to design and build, I don't think the price is unreasonable at all. Stuff costs money, fine stuff costs even more money.
@ldifalco20103 жыл бұрын
@@VinceRiviera I have no argument with the cost. It's a beautiful piece, a dream come true for those of us who haul or in my case, used to haul a Rhodes around and had to deal with all the problems the original had. I'm sure you are right that for the hours of research and development, the construction and marketing, 10k American dollars is reasonable for those willing to pay it. My point though is does the market exist for such an instrument? If everyone working in that factory in Leeds can earn a living then that's great. But as you saw, so far they have made 12 and the company has been around a little while. I sincerely hope they succeed. The world is a better place when you can actually purchase a new Rhodes. Btw, new tine electric pianos have been manufactured by a US company for quite some time, they just can't legally call it a Rhodes.

Wowwww... this is amazing. I have a mark 2 but now I want one of these. When you consider the price of a new NS3 is €3,500 then this isn’t too unrealistic a price band for the quality of workmanship going into each one. I think black with silver front rail, black control panel and violet top looks sweet.

Wow! this is a product made with love, and guess who fell in love with it? I would go for the walnut with clear lid and the black fascia. That clear plastic which makes the inside visible is sick.

I like either the black, dark green, or red with the walnut sides. Personally I’d go with the red

Clear hood, black bottom shell and black front panel. Black FX panel and chrome stand. Place some dim red LEDs in the back to give it a red hue (and glowing logo), and give the clear hood a "dry rub" of glow-in-black-light pigment (VERY lightly -- so it's still see-through). Place some cold cathode black lights inside, and this thing will be a treasure.

I would get it in orange but in your studio red and black would look great. The chrome legs makes it look more classic.
