THE RHYTHM STEP AND SYSTEMS TALK
www.dynamicstriking.com
In this fight training video, Barry Robinson talks about the rhythm step and systems.
Barry Robinson is a premiere striking and boxing coach. This is an excerpt from MAKE THE L STEP GREAT AGAIN available from DynamicStriking.com.
Dynamic Striking was started by a pair of black belts (Bernardo Faria & Michael Zenga) who feel that nothing is more important than improving your striking skills as much as possible in the least amount of time. Their aim was to create a shop for students interested in striking who don’t look at mixed martial arts as a sport - but as a lifestyle.

So what I gather from this is there are advantages and disadvantages to using rhythm step/pendulum step but it's situational only and can't be used for long periods so what should you do to instead

Yeah. Everything in boxing is situational. Everything has its pros and cons and it all depends on the moment

@@ChickenStew8567Ali’s bounce was more like running in place or jumping rope footwork. He would bounce and move laterally for a bit, then settle into his stance and throw some punches, then go back to moving laterally. This more jump rope style bounce can be done for longer periods of time. Bouncing while in your stance takes way more energy.

Barry Robinson is an absolute genius. He just lacks the people skills and discursive work required to build a proper relationship with a high level fighter.

If the rythm step is used as a squense, u can: jab to hide the front leg stepping closer to the back leg. While bringing the jab back u half step with front leg transitioning into blitz punches (overhand + hook) The Norwegian national 64kg smacked me a couple of times, but I was able to touch him. Suprized him with the blitz rush, but didnt touch him "significantilly" - to be continiued

Took me a lot to understand what he was talking about, he doesn't articulate clearly and seems like he never really explains what he's trying to teach. Add to that I had no reference of what he is refering to (like the 50:50). Regardless, what I can get from this is that constantly bouncing gets you tired and makes you somewhat predictable. Like, the opponent will figure out the perfect moment to use your bouncing to your disadvantage. He also mentions that if you only learn one or very few types of steps, your maneuverability and tactics become limited. You need to be able to mix them, switch between them so you can adapt. Nevertheless, he never talks about the advantages of the steps/bouncing.
