16:10 I went to Chengdu No. 7 middle school and high school and I was one of the students on the other side of the screen. I always knew someone was watching us taking classes but I never had a chance to see their side of the story. Glad some people are trying to make a difference and I could be a part of it.

I'm chineses,I feel almost the same feeling as the people in the video.In China everythin can relate to huge population.Everyone struggle to study hard to gain entrance to univeristy.However they or their parents don't intend to fullfill their dreams.A good degree of university means good job opportunity，a good job means stable and good salary，which brings good life.However cruel as it is almost half of them can't go to high school as lack of proper education resources.Among those who are lucky and smart enough to go to university.nowadays there are about 10 million students who have graduated from universities,by the time I was school annually,the number is 7 million. However the real qualified schools are few.In china universities are recognised as good univesities are only about 100 untis.On average every school has over 3000 students every year which means there are only 300,000 students are cosidered to be the real university students.Other schools are seen as a way to postponed the unemployement，to boys the schools is like a internet cafe，to girls it is like cinema. From what I say above.which means the fact you want to be successful is to beat eveyone else in the classroom.This is really cruel.From my opinion eveyone has the right to live the life they want,chase the dream they really like,and be happy.However this is not the situation which now our country are going through right now.Eveyone are anxious and fear of poor and miserable life so they study hard and work hard. For the majority,it is the only way to get rid of this kind of anxiety."Knowledge changes destiny"is well-known to every Chinese. Life shouldn't be like this,really.

Partially agree. To regain the essence of meaning of the life which is not just about wealth from the ancient Chinese philosophy requires whole society's stigma changing. Not everyone should go to uni and every person working hard and responsible in his position should be respected by whole society and respect and love themselves. Not everyone should follow the same life pattern designed by mainstream society but everyone who loves his life should be respected. But on the other hand, for those young people from poorer areas they may also have dreams to travel not just outside home but also travel abroad for better vision and achieve their dreams but they are limited in financial resources and educational resources compared with city peers. Wish government and society distributes more resources to young people in rural areas who have talent and bigger dreams.

If you want to see and talk about China's 5000 years culture than you have to visit Taiwan, because in mainland China their beloved chairman Mao ordered to destroy all the signs of their old culture, to form a new one based on Marxism. It was the greatest culturicide in the history. So now, the only authentic old Chinese culture exists in Taiwan, and that's one of the main reasons why Xitler desperately wants unification at any price, even it is peace and prosperity.

Reality is reality... it is what it is! It is easy to pass judgement and wish things were different retrospectively. But when one finds oneself in a real situation, one can only do whatever is required to do the best of the situation, good or bad. It would only be wishful thinking to expect otherwise. The development of a society as anything else, is not so much about the destination as the journey, for there will never be a final destination unless it is the one that spells the end of existence of that society. At best, we can set goals to achieve milestones in our development, but the only way we will be able to keep moving forward is to learn from our mistakes, and always forge a vision that is more inclusive and synergistic. For, in the end, can we truly see our future in any other way other than one in an ever expanding reality?

Very inspiring words you convey here yet another dream, reality is not as hopeful, if theirs one thing to learn from history is that we keep on repeating the same mistakes generation after generation; you see it in how the best system of things we've come up with thus far i.e. capitalism combined the rule of law and personal freedoms are faced with the repeat resurgence of the failed communism/centralized governing ideals all over the planet, we don't learn from the massive failures of it/ socialism, the biggest human spirit destroyer and destroyer of human general progress, though is constantly failing and failing within a single generation of people yet socialism and/or parts of its components are still looked at as a hope for bettering lives, is crazy! There are so many challenges in China from geographical point of view as major part of China is not much accessible due to high mountains. Equally poor is easily, but equally rich is hard. The Chinese Dream is to become equally rich instead of equally poor and the only way to do this is by making a small group of people rich first so they can help others to become rich.

Equally rich is easy too. The poorest people in Sweden or The Netherlands get better healthcare, education and housing than the super rich in almost all countries. Its all about the free middle class, smart taxation and low corruption. These countries have no billionaires like the US or the UK, the state simply does not allow the super wealthy to exploit poor people and get heavily taxed. The "trickle down" economy is an illusion created by billionaires to escape taxes and their personal responsabilities.

With about 1/5th of the world's population and starting from one of the worst periods in recent Chinese history, the Chinese have gone a long way.

@@angeliquewu8318 Yes of course. And its not my intention to criticise China. I was just offering examples of countries that have very strong economies and have very high taxes. Just to show that "socialism" can work very well when done correctly. In the US, Republicans always mention Venezuela and never Sweden or The Netherlands when discussing this topic just because it doesnt support their narrative. I do think however that China, now that its strong and safe, needs to implement more democracy. Its in essence a good thing to question the leadership in order to encourage the country as a whole to do better. China needs to understand that it does not have to fear criticism, but can use it to grow stronger. Also of course, it will help to gain trust internationally and gets the respect it needs as a world leader. China could for example start a "Green Party" that criticizes the government in a constructive way on enviromental issues. Also local minorities could get some political representation to be able to focus attention on local issues. In the long run this will only make the country stronger in my opinion. I understand that in the past these matters seem irrelevant for Chinese leadership. The horrors the country had to endure, from the opium wars to the Japanese invasion and the civil war are not to be underestimated. The journey the country made from The Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution to the amazing country it is today, is simply brilliant. And the CCP, especially Deng Xiaoping, did great things to improve the lives of the Chinese citizens! Over here in The Netherlands, we understand that the Chinese people are not our enemies. Diplomats are working hard to open up the Chinese market for Dutch companies and in return Chinese people are very welcome here to work with us to grow strong together. This however does not mean we agree with everything the CCP does, but to disagree is not something to get angry about. Its the foundation of our way of thinking and it has to be looked at as a constructive way to grow.

@@ageoflove1980 Great that you have this kind of outlook. Just a few things though... "implement more democracy." Actually, nowadays, a lot of youth are voting for their local elected leaders. "a good thing to question the leadership in order to encourage the country as a whole to do better." Chinese people were already doing that in the past. Chinese people do actually protest, despite what the media may say, and they are quite vocal online nowadays. However, for this kind of face tearing criticism that is the culture of the West, you must be qualified to have the right to do so. There are actually some very high profile critics of governmental policies, and they are all intelligent academic professors, actual officials, etc. These people know what they are talking about, and when they criticize, they have good reasons, good evidence, and aren't just tearing at things unconstructively. Just in general, in China, the political atmosphere is a lot more open than most people might believe. "China needs to understand that it does not have to fear criticism, but can use it to grow stronger." I have already spoken about how China listens to internal criticism, but there are also examples of China listening to external criticism as well. Notably, the Chinese government invited Kishore Mahbubani, respected Singaporean diplomat, to come and tell the government "what they are doing wrong" (in the words of the diplomat himself). I don't believe that China fears criticism at all. "China could for example start a "Green Party" that criticizes the government in a constructive way on environmental issues." See, that's the thing, China is not a party state. The CCP is more like Rotary International than an actual political party. Also, in this example, environmental issues has actually been one of China's priorities, which just shows how in touch the Chinese government is. Because the government is in touch with the reality, for now at least, there is no need for another party specifically made to criticize. "Also local minorities could get some political representation to be able to focus attention on local issues." The CCP is like Rotary International (except just for China). Ethnic minorities have had representation since the beginning of the country (some Han even complain of the preferential treatment that those minorities get), so in case you were talking other kinds of minorities, here are some stats that show how people who would usually be minorities are actually well represented in the government. 90,000,000 members of the CCP are volunteers who contribute over $1,000,000,000 in annual dues along with billions of volunteer hours. Members don’t benefit financially from membership. Half the members have at least a junior college degree, forty percent are women, one-third are ‘exemplary farmers, herdsmen and fishermen,’ a quarter are white-collar workers, a sixth are retirees. So these people are quite in touch with the reality, I would say. 10% of Party members are ethnic minorities, though ethnic minorities make up 8.5% of China’s population. Seven million civil servants are Party members. Two-thirds of the Party’s leaders have graduate degrees and one-fourth have PhDs. Members vote democratically-on a one man, one vote basis-for senior Party and government appointments. This is a cultural thing, because for the Chinese, a person who picks up litter on a hot day is more qualified to pick leaders than a person who only wants to eat a popsicle.

I personally have travelled through China for months and I know from experience that its not some strange totalitarian state like often argued in some Western media and that I was free to travel and enjoy the country as I pleased. What I ment its that its perhaps more of an image problem. The things you mention are simply not known in "the west" and obviously most of the people there did not enjoy the privilege of travelling in China in order to have their own independent opinion on the matter. I think alot of people from western countries would be surprised about how "normal" everyday life is and that the everyday life of Chinese citizen is not that different from people from the US or Europe. So in the end I think China has a bit of a challenge to market itself to people who are perhaps less informed. To work on the brand of "China" if you like. I met amazing people in China. I remember this tailor who helped me out when a button needed to be put back on my pants. He did it on the spot and even refused payment because it only took him a minute... Try to find a guy like that in the US lol! Also when travelling in Tibet I lost my wallet at some point. A woman returned it to me with all the money still in it, about $200, a small fortune in that part of the country. But thats the thing, I know its an amazing place with amazing friendly people. The problem is that alot of people dont.

In CHinese Tradition, the sons and daughters are to Take Care of their parents as they get older. Many parents stay with their children and have family groups/govn support/community support. As such mnay are NOT lonely or worry what happends after their death. Modern cities have community support groups within housing estates/etc. All citizens over 60 years old are automatically given 50% off all govn facilities ( Parks, National parks, Train, Buses, MRT, etc )

Mao did many terrible things.... As the narrator said, the ordering of millions of young Chinese to go live and 'develop' rural areas in China is but one of many tragedies seldom talk about.... It was extremely tough and many young people suffered, the girls had it the worse... Stories of rape and exploitation by seniors giving empty promises... For people interested in finding out more, the book 'Out of the Gobi' by Weijian Shan and the movie 'Xiu Xiu' by Joan Chen is a good start.

Just saying, in general Chinese view, the world was, is and will never be only black & white. While we have been through so many mistakes and disasters, we never ignore Mao's mistakes, but we will never downplay his contributions toward China too. And so like many other things, like Cultural Revolution, the great leap forward, the 64 Tiananmen, and more. If you want to dig into the darkness, you will always find it. But it will be as the same as if you tried to find the stories of hope, lights, selfless sacrificed, heroes, they will be there too. And let's say thank god those disasters happened in such early stage, it forced the Chinese civilisation to went through the whole industrial and Cultural Revolution procedures that the rest of the world have taken a hundred of years to become, and China already ahead of most of them, by looking at the general west is going down to the path of Cultural Revolution almost killed China before. A rather very irony sight.

40 years ago when China was opening up, the West wondered how the Chinese people would react when they suddenly learned about the gap in economic advancement. 40 years later the situation is reversing fast. The UK has just banned CGTN tv channel so that the British people could learn less on how much their economy is behind, or the handling of Covid. China is writing the biggest economic success story in history. Some rich-poor gap is not only not a big deal but it is an ingenious idea already studied 40 years ago.

So I believe that misinformation and hoaxes are what China's government afraid of..and China used to use the same internet with the rest of us, until China's request for taking down terrorism related groups news were dismissed by "internet owner"..so they build a safer internet environment themselves. They have 1.4 billions people to be taken care of. They can use VPN if they want to know the world's chaotic internet though..the government just not allowing that chaotic world enter their country. I live in the city of Hangzhou at 30:00 and have been to TianDuCheng天都城 to see the Eiffel Tower, and it's super strange. There's even a whole fake castle built there, french style gardens, beautiful mountains and clean lakes. It's actually a very pleasant place. (This place was originally one of China's famous ghost towns, but has since filled up more or less). Anyone who visits Hangzhou should take a day out of their schedule to go there and check the place out.

My grandparents got to live in a spacious apartment from the government last year at no cost, moved away from her farmhouse on a distant mountain. That was their dreams fulfilled.

Do you know what my dream is ? My dream is that, my village area from my grandfather's generation is rebuilt.. Just like how I remembered it, as a child. I loved that old wooden building... which housed us, for generation to generation... and preserved. I feel PROUD to live in that building. I read in the HK SAR government's records that, my family had been in HK since the 1600 period.... I feel PROUD. What the heck is wrong with people inside the mainland !!??!? Do you know that, many countries, preserve their old buildings, and heritages ?? The first time I read about, in a magazine.. abroad.. in the UK. About how Beijing have torn down their buildings, those old Hutongs... I cried. A lot. Are people actually CRAZY ?!?!!?!? ..... Some people now born in HK can only remember the 1960s.. or even 1990s... I yearn for the 1600s.. or whenever the Ming dynasties were.... Modernising can change you as a person, and your roots... People are too warped.

It is very heart-warming... when I read that... the farmer still go up the hill to collect the Sichuan peppers... That was what my mother used to do. :) She would walk up the hill, behind our houses... and then we can see across the sea.. and in the morning, we would see the mists settle in... As the sunrises... That is my dream. To be able to walk with her once again, before she is not able to do so. She farmed all her life.. and I am proud of my mother.

@@MeiinUK That really escalated quickly. Please note that everyone is entitled to their own dream too. You may want your village to be rebuilt, not everyone else. I only knew the fact that the apartments liberated the elderly from years of hard physical labor and they are happy for that. I hope one day you could have a mindset that cares beyond yourself.

I use to live in China for a couple of years, and it was absolutely ridiculous at the massive gap of wealth and class within society. It really is horrific, but you know what was the interesting part? The much poorer people were always the happiest and most content in comparison to the extremely wealthy. It was an eye opening experience that’s for sure!

I see a lot of homeless people in major cities around the world. Do Chinese cities also home noticeable homeless people ? The migration from village to urban only happens when the villages have no jobs or source of income in their villages. I cannot imagine a land owner in the village making such a move. And in the cities, not all their problems will be solved. Working in cities is not easy and very taxing. Only a few will make it big. Others will remain urban workers. It is the WILL of the people to ENDURE and LIVE that makes all the development possible. At the end of the day, it is ALL FOR ONE.

It does not has anything to do with if the village is remote or not, it is effected by other issues. And for me, their accent is far easier to understand than Shanghai or Beijing dialogue. Because this village is closer to my hometown Chengdu city.

Problem: Flag doesn't waver all the time when there are no wind most of the time. System 1 uses waste exhaust air from the building's air condition system.
