In 2016, Darren Campbell replied to someone who asked if this happened: "Yeah! He was always an interesting character. He does like to take a lot of credit for my success! I reckon my Olympic success was down to his training methods when we were kids. I love that he's being successful for just being true to himself. That's what makes him so endearing. We're still mates. Just hearing his name makes me laugh - in the right way!" So, their friendship continued - that's great!

You have to remember that the 86 world cup was only 4 years after the Falklands War between Argentina and the UK. So even though he did blatantly cheat and got away with it, it served as a win they could celebrate to spite England especially after the UK crushed Argentina for invading the Falklands

I have severe, like super severe, diagnosed social anxiety. In my head I feel fine, I can think clearly, not be afraid or shy in any way but my pulse will be 115 just sitting in a restaurant. I've had medical doctors tell me to calm down in the middle of exams, I'm not afraid of doctors or of exams, fine with needles and dentist drills. MD's love ignoring mental disorders. I can't tell my body to calm down! So I totally get Karl there, that he's stressed in his body but his head hasn't caught up yet.

If you do the xfm shows you've gotta remember this was 2002, Karl was unknown, Steve & Ricky had been on xfm already, been kicked off, did the office which was a hit, then got invited back as big shots. The first half of the first series is a lot of them two talking with Karl, chipping in now & then. It's not until a bit later they realise Karl is comedy gold 😂 Karl then basically becomes the reason everyone tunes in & the rest, as they say, is history.

(Before the beginning) You're excited. 😂I'm glad when you're excited. (The beginning) I was gonna say "They FINALLY gave Karl water," but never mind, once I saw what happened. (Stress) I remember being very stressed when I was 23. I had midterms to study for (it was March), in my last semester of college before graduating, my paternal grandma had just died right when I was due to take a midterm for one class and I wound up taking the test about an hour before class started so I could get to the funeral that same day, I'm always getting sick, and while I don't remember being sick exactly at that moment, it was like I had just been sick or was about to be sick (it hits me BAD whenever I'm sick), also winter for us in the northern hemisphere ends in March so the weather was part of the stress, there was a bunch all at once. So I was really stressed at that time. (Bed) As a guy (in real life, not on a sitcom), I can say that it would be weird to be in (or on) a bed with another guy. Even if they're buddies, not everyone is comfortable with another guy on the same bed like that, even knowing it's just a football game. If that happens, one is on one corner of the bed, and the other is at the opposite corner, where the pillows are. It only gets filled in when there's more guys for fewer seats. That's when it's still uncomfortable but less awkward. So I don't blame Ricky for putting pillows in between them. I've always known the bed thing, that you're asking about, to be more of a girl thing. Like in the movies when there's a sleep over. Guys don't tend to do that. "You can't help it." So you DO know what I was talking about in recent past videos. 😂 I agree with you on the saliva part.

Speaking as an outsider - but who's had Argentinian friends and acquintances in the past, who've tried to explain the whole pride in the "Hand of God" World Cup moment despite the fact that it was cheating - the only thing I can add to the context of that, is that part of it (and why it confuses outsiders like yourself and me) is because of a) who it was against. England and Argentina have a frought history as you should be well aware, in which respect things like....b) the Falklands war was still very fresh and raw in the minds and public consciousness of Argentinians having been only a few years prior. So in a twisted way, that Hand of God moment - and knowing how important football is to British people - was kind of like a cosmic schadenfraude-ey payback for Argentinians at the time. Obviously a lot of people today don't care as much, or at least the generations that have enough separation between themselves and that time. It's mostly a thing for the people who were living and young at the time as well as the children they brought up in the aftermath. As for England, and why it matters to Brits, it's because that was the closest they had ever come to getting back to a World Cup final since they won it on home soil in '66, and they know they are perennial losers when it comes to a game they routinely love to call "their own". So it extra hurt. Possibly the only other country on Earth for whom it would mean nearly as much for the Argentinians to win that way would be against Brazil. Against most other countries they wouldn't really care.
@lloydwaycott8178
@lloydwaycott8178 10 ай бұрын
As a Brit, may I say, it wasn't because it was the proximity to a win that matters, it was being cheated. Unlike Argentinians, we have a strong moral code and character. If one of our players had done that it would be a source of shame. Argentinians don't feel shame.

@MarcoNegrisEye
@MarcoNegrisEye 10 ай бұрын
I just had to do this: The term warm the cockles of one’s heart dates back to the mid-1600s, a time when scientific texts were often written in Latin. The Latin term cochleae cordis means ventricles of the heart, and most probably, the word cochleae was corrupted as cockles. This may have been a mistake made by the less learned, or a deliberate joke. Add in the fact that the bivalve mollusk known as a cockle is shaped somewhat like a heart, and the idea of the phrase cockles of one’s heart being more or less a joke gains credence.

I don't think Ricky and Steve were ever really friends. They worked together and had a great working relationship, but they didn't hang out outside of work. They even talked about it on XFM after Ricky had a birthday party. Karl was there. Steve didn't even get an invite. They've even mentioned that they've never been at each others apartments. That's just not the relationship they have/had. Karl and Ricky are/were a lot closer though.

Just looked at the footage. He did handball. But then, in those days what was in the referee's line of sight was gospel. He didn't see the foul, so therefore couldn't judge it hand ball?

Yeah, Ricky’s completely wrong on stress. You can have a completely physical stress response that persists after no reason to remain stressed remains.

Mandy. I'm a bloke. A British bloke. There is no way, on God's green earth, that I would lay on a bed with a mate, watching telly. Never going to happen. I mean, are you kidding? Come on.

Agreed, that extends to how we verbally make fun of our close friends too. I always say that we only share a language with Americans, everything about our culture is completely different

Nothing to do with class or being British. That’s your excuse so you don’t have to deal with how insecure you are about your sexuality. Plenty of working class British men wouldn’t give a shit.

The thing with stress is that it affects everyone differently so no one is wrong with hiw they say they experience it. Completely with you on the bed situation, nothing wrong at all.with that. Are you going to have no socks on then for the foreseeable future?

Regarding the bed situation, Steve is a really big guy and it would kind of feel like being in bed with your Dad or something so I kinda get it.

On the Maradona "hand of god" goal, English football fans still moan about it, sometimes..as if we'd have won otherwise, which very clearly we wouldn't have. Yes, it was definitely 100% cheating and he got away with it. However, it's a very, very different approach English fans have for the English striker Michael Owen's "Trip of god" against Argentina a few years later when he dived like he was in Swan Lake and cheated the referee into giving England a penalty. English fans shut right up about that one - very rarely gets mentioned and when it does you'll still get those arguing that he didn't dive! This is despite Owen himself finally admitting, years later that he blatantly dived and cheated and even he was amazed he got away with it.
