Speaking as an outsider - but who's had Argentinian friends and acquintances in the past, who've tried to explain the whole pride in the "Hand of God" World Cup moment despite the fact that it was cheating - the only thing I can add to the context of that, is that part of it (and why it confuses outsiders like yourself and me) is because of a) who it was against. England and Argentina have a frought history as you should be well aware, in which respect things like....b) the Falklands war was still very fresh and raw in the minds and public consciousness of Argentinians having been only a few years prior. So in a twisted way, that Hand of God moment - and knowing how important football is to British people - was kind of like a cosmic schadenfraude-ey payback for Argentinians at the time. Obviously a lot of people today don't care as much, or at least the generations that have enough separation between themselves and that time. It's mostly a thing for the people who were living and young at the time as well as the children they brought up in the aftermath. As for England, and why it matters to Brits, it's because that was the closest they had ever come to getting back to a World Cup final since they won it on home soil in '66, and they know they are perennial losers when it comes to a game they routinely love to call "their own". So it extra hurt. Possibly the only other country on Earth for whom it would mean nearly as much for the Argentinians to win that way would be against Brazil. Against most other countries they wouldn't really care.
@lloydwaycott8178 Жыл бұрын
As a Brit, may I say, it wasn't because it was the proximity to a win that matters, it was being cheated. Unlike Argentinians, we have a strong moral code and character. If one of our players had done that it would be a source of shame. Argentinians don't feel shame.

(Before the beginning) You're excited. 😂I'm glad when you're excited. (The beginning) I was gonna say "They FINALLY gave Karl water," but never mind, once I saw what happened. (Stress) I remember being very stressed when I was 23. I had midterms to study for (it was March), in my last semester of college before graduating, my paternal grandma had just died right when I was due to take a midterm for one class and I wound up taking the test about an hour before class started so I could get to the funeral that same day, I'm always getting sick, and while I don't remember being sick exactly at that moment, it was like I had just been sick or was about to be sick (it hits me BAD whenever I'm sick), also winter for us in the northern hemisphere ends in March so the weather was part of the stress, there was a bunch all at once. So I was really stressed at that time. (Bed) As a guy (in real life, not on a sitcom), I can say that it would be weird to be in (or on) a bed with another guy. Even if they're buddies, not everyone is comfortable with another guy on the same bed like that, even knowing it's just a football game. If that happens, one is on one corner of the bed, and the other is at the opposite corner, where the pillows are. It only gets filled in when there's more guys for fewer seats. That's when it's still uncomfortable but less awkward. So I don't blame Ricky for putting pillows in between them. I've always known the bed thing, that you're asking about, to be more of a girl thing. Like in the movies when there's a sleep over. Guys don't tend to do that. "You can't help it." So you DO know what I was talking about in recent past videos. 😂 I agree with you on the saliva part.

@MarcoNegrisEye Жыл бұрын
I just had to do this: The term warm the cockles of one’s heart dates back to the mid-1600s, a time when scientific texts were often written in Latin. The Latin term cochleae cordis means ventricles of the heart, and most probably, the word cochleae was corrupted as cockles. This may have been a mistake made by the less learned, or a deliberate joke. Add in the fact that the bivalve mollusk known as a cockle is shaped somewhat like a heart, and the idea of the phrase cockles of one’s heart being more or less a joke gains credence.

On the Maradona "hand of god" goal, English football fans still moan about it, sometimes..as if we'd have won otherwise, which very clearly we wouldn't have. Yes, it was definitely 100% cheating and he got away with it. However, it's a very, very different approach English fans have for the English striker Michael Owen's "Trip of god" against Argentina a few years later when he dived like he was in Swan Lake and cheated the referee into giving England a penalty. English fans shut right up about that one - very rarely gets mentioned and when it does you'll still get those arguing that he didn't dive! This is despite Owen himself finally admitting, years later that he blatantly dived and cheated and even he was amazed he got away with it.

Karl was 100% right with the stress thing. Like saying he knew he was safe but he was still experiencing the physical symptoms of stress. That's just what anxiety is, experiencing some physical symptoms of something that hasn't happened. If something makes you jump like a loud noise, you know it's just a car backfiring or something but you still have an elevated heart rate etc. Ricky just likes disagreeing with Karl regardless of whether he's wrong or right. Also I don't think I could sit on a bed next to a male friend like that, it's way too intimate. I think it's one of those things that it's normal for women to do but weird for guys.
@MandyCaneLane Жыл бұрын
There is nothing intimate about a bed unless you make intimate things happen on it, but that being said you can do intimate things anywhere. A bed is just a long couch. 🤷🏻♀️
@SaintPhoenixx9 ай бұрын
@MandyCaneLane I think its more than football is a conversational game, I'd feel weird turning to someone sitting next to me in bed to talk about it. I wouldn't feel awkward because its a bed and I'd be worried about them shagging me, more just that I'd be weirdly close. I wouldn't sit right next to a guy on a couch either. I'd want a bit of personal space in that social environment.
