It either sounds like a harp or a wet fart lmao, no in between, and my fretless bass sounded like the latter. Tbf though, I bought it as a 15 year old on GC's website, thought it was cool that they made fretless basses with fret lines. Went to pick it up, excited as hell, when the guy at the counter opened it and went "holy fucking shit" and chuckled, I knew I was in for a surprise. Twas an ibanez sr305, I remember it like it was yesterday. The previous owner had yoinked all the frets out and filled the slots with epoxy. He didn't do a good job either, so when they came out, they splintered the hell out of the fretboard. With a good bit of work though, I got it working right, and played the absolute shit out of it, being careful not to slide, because it made a horrible noise. Look at this, I'm 25 and ramble like an old fuck speaking about the days of old. Anyway I'll wrap up. So I still play the bass with a similar fretting technique, of just barely on the flat side of the fret I wanna use, instead of the center. But yeah I never got great at using at as a fretless should be used, but I played a lot of Korn and got decent at slap BEHS.

I play fretless bass guitar. From my experience fret markers only take you so far. I learned to play it by ear. The markers aren't 100% reliable because there are other factors involved such as intonation, string gauge, tross rod tension, etc that affects the pitch of the note on a micro tune level. You are honestly better off just learning to play the thing without looking at the fretboard, that way you can learn to react and correct pitch by ear regardless of the state of the these factors. This of course up to a certain point. If you are widely out of tune that will still throw you off a bit, but fretlessness does give you the possibility to correct in real time way more than a fretted instrument ever could.
@williamleardini88762 жыл бұрын
I'm a Fretless player . I can confirm everything you wrote. At one point you simply "know what you are doing" , but it took me nearly ten years of hard practice and a lot of tears. But in the beginning you just need something keeps you on track. A full blind instrument for a beginner is impossible. Myself too I started painting the fret ten years ago. It took me at least 4 years before I started to follow ears and my hand . But yeah, the control you get after the years of practice is something a fretted player can never truly understand.

@naborlz2 жыл бұрын
@@williamleardini8876 String instruments beginners start almost always with markers (any tape). They last usually for a couple months. The difference is that you also need some exercises to put your hand and your ear in order, while in guitar/bass and etc you don't. There's plenty of ways to understand if you are playing on tune or not, before you train ur ear, for most instruments. I don't play guitar but by logic, I'd say that if u take too long or can't learn how to play a fretless instrument, it's because you are not following a method for that, if u just ignore the marks but keep doing the "normal" exercises, u will just be making everyhing way harder, it's just not worth it. I'd recommend to watch some shifting position exercises for violin just to understand the logic and then just apply to a guitar,bass and etc.

@@agent2face512 As a violin player, there's definitely a big difference. When playing a violin, your hand stays in the same spot on the strings most of the time, and when you do move it, it's not very far - basically the length of three to six fingertips. A guitar neck is over 25 inches long, and requires you to move your hand around it constantly. Getting lost without a visual indicator would be extremely easy, and you have to be very precise to avoid making a note sound slightly off. That's what the fret markers are for - showing you at a glance precisely where to put your hands when you need to make a long-distance jump. Also, almost everyone who learns violin starts with markers too ;)

I thought it was a bug or a fly and tried to brush it away. I grabbed the string at the bridge, ran my hand along it and discovered that the end of the broken string had stuck straight into my face barely below my eye. That was scary. I once accidentally broke my acoustic guitar in about the same spot. After immediate nausea, feeling light headed/dizzy and crying a bit I went over to my dad’s and to repair the damage we started by drilling two holes. We used two lag bolts and gorilla wood glue. That was 18 years ago. Wish I could show a pic. To this day it still plays without a hiccup. Never loses tune (per the damage) and the glue has never shrank.

I have a 1950's Hopf electric that cost a few quid from a local junk shop. I took it to school and it was involved in an accident and the neck snapped at a similar place, afterwards the woodwork teacher fixed it 'as best he could' only using Resin-W and a few clamps (and he actually did a fabulous job on it). You can't even tell it's been repaired, plays perfectly and keeps tune etc, and that repair was done over 40 years ago.

@@solitairestarr5516 I've never had opportunity to play one of their acoustics but I am aware they are amazing instruments. Mine is a strange beast; Dieter Hopf told me it was the first electric they made and the first to come out of Germany. It has many 'acoustic' signatures, such as wooden bridge, wooden scratchplate, no truss rod in the neck and a zero fret, which is probably why it sounds like nothing else. It's my 'go to' guitar for working on ideas and despite being in need of a proper set up, it always finds its way on to at least one song of every album I've released in the last 40 years! I found Hopf guitars very approachable for information, might be worth emailing if you want to know more about yours :-)
@solitairestarr55162 жыл бұрын
@@dizdozpurpleproductions Gosh, thanks, I'd never thought about approaching them for more info. I just absolutely treasure my Hopf and I see it as my role to preserve it (I have done quite a bit of restorative work) and to ensure that it goes somewhere special after me. They were fine instruments, the famous American Hoffner was a crude copy of these. To be frank though, the non-reinforced neck means it isn't playable beyond the 3rd fret...(far too much action) so I don't play it much. I need to work on a list of songs that don't need to go beyond it's limits! I'd love it if you sent me a link to some of your work :-)

If you play guitar in a performing band as a serious hobby or as a job, and you need to look at fret markers in order to stay in key, you are in big trouble on stage because it's dark a lot. You quickly are forced to pay very close attention to where your fretting hand is relative to your guitar's headstock and where its body starts in order to stay in the right key when the stage is dark and you're in the middle of a tune. You pick that up 'by feel' very quickly because you're forced to. Most players pick it up without too much problem. It's not clear why the market for performing guitars that are all fretless has never taken off. One answer could be this: the majority of guitars are sold to 'I play in my house by myself' players. But then you have violins etc. which are always fretless. So it's probably just 'momentum' like how in the U.S. we have never picked up the metric system. If Gibson tried switching to fretless, they'd go under. Violin, cello, etc. makers it would probably be the opposite.

@@mkrznar you are correct. The sad part on this one is that it could have actually been fixed. I have seen far worse neck fixed. The area of the crack would be stronger than it was with the titebond.

When you put on that clamp you should have added some wood glue before, the bond is usually stronger than the one between the actual wood fibers. This thing could have been perfectly fine 24 hours later.
@claire66502 жыл бұрын
The bond is indeed usually stronger, but right this is a snap at the joint, so it was already glued at factory, if it snapped, mean the fiber broke too and to fix it, i would requires removing the residue of glue and splinters
