At 82, my arthritic hands have revolted. My 6 string is now harder than when self taught at 77. I added a cigar box and some Asper Cream. Voila! That and your comments about loving the sounds have given this old Marine hope. Thank You!!

Watched this video Shane and you really got to me with your explanation, been making cigar box guitars some time now but after listening to you, made me realise that maybe the reason for me not being as good playing them as making them is because I’m trying to hard to play by gathering info from many sources and not really listening. So thanks. Regards Brian from Birmingham England.

Helped me more than anything I’ve heard. I was and am frustrated, anxious, discouraged, and this was tremulously inspiring. I’d given up on my CBG. I’m going to restart and focus on this lesson’s inspirational message. Well done buddy! Thanks Shane!

This video hit me hard. I’m going to go back and play the things i like to hear on my cigar box. the soul will play now and we will see where we go.

As an absolute beginner, I love to sit in my shed doing exactly this. Not making a conscious effort to learn a particular song, just trying to make beautiful sounds, that hit you right in your soul ! Joy can be found in small things ......

I discovered some years back while trying to learn the Mountain Dulcimer that unless a piece of music speaks to me, I'm wasting my time trying to learn it. Now, I try to play what "speaks to me" while going through the process of learning to build an instrument that can speak that same language to me.

This is what I do. People sometimes say to me “Shane just play a song”. But I find sitting and finding chords and notes that go together is very relaxing. I can’t read music and have very little music theory knowledge. I just like playing. Cheers, Shane K.

Needed to hear that message today! I can't seem to remember the songs or riffs I try to learn for very long, but fingers always seem ready to take me somewhere.... guess it's all I really need. Thanks, Brother
@turnstyles74852 жыл бұрын
Shane, there is nothing "stupid" about your two note riff, or this video. It is the best video you have posted and it will be the most important one for those who take the message to heart. My best musical performances have always been those that touched my heart and the hearts of my listeners. They were good because they were not "performances" at all. I just opened my heart and the song came out of my mouth. A while back I clicked on one of Ibrahim Maalouf's videos and was reminded of the power of music to touch our souls. As I watched and listened I was so deeply affected that tears rolled down my face. I just let the emotion roll through me as the beauty of the moment and the music overcame me. Afterwards, I thought about why the video had such an effect on me. I came up with a few ideas but most of the reasons remain a mystery, and that is as it should be. The video begins with a view of the audience and you can tell they are filled with joyous anticipation because they know that Ibrahim is about to bring out Juliet Creco. At the time I didn't know who she was, she was just a kind of scary looking old lady. But it was obvious that every one there adored her. Every word in the song is French and I didn't understand any of them. She didn't even have a particularly good voice at this point in her life. Yet, the tears were uncontrollable. When you can have that kind of effect on people, your music has done what it should do. That's much more than entertainment. You can find the video in question at this link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmrJoYCvas54Zqs . I would advise you to watch it on a computer with earbuds in a quiet space at night. It probably won't have the same effect on you as it did me, but I hope you enjoy it.

The most important thing you said … IMHO if you don’t love the music, it just isn’t there. We can watch bands or individuals and know when their heart is in what they’re doing. I really learned that playing upright bass with bluegrass bands.

This is without a doubt the best guitar lesson I've ever experienced. What more can I say? Freeing...
@tabriff38323 жыл бұрын
Yup, that's what does it for me. You play your first single slide, and you're just hungry for more. Play 2 or 3 in combination.. Ooh-wee, tingles up the spine. Cut my teeth on Amazing Grace. Wrote a tune, that I've played so much, its aged.

Hey I’m with you on that. it took me 6months or so to build my first CBG out of mostly scrap wood and minimum hardware and I am finally at this stage of experimenting with the sounds. I must say I’m amused by some tones and licks that hit me on the spot. It just brings joy! Hope you feel that way soon!

I’m just preparing myself to build my 1st cigar box guitar after trying playing piano for the past two years wich I enjoy very much without learning any songs so far but playing chords that sounds magical and make me feel so good and bringning emotions . Can’t wait to build this little cbg to experiment the special sound that goes to the heart. Thank you for the best music lesson I ever heard for the past 2 years and I ‘ve listened hundreds of music tutorials on you tube to learn bit by bit the music . You just gave me the answer I was looking for…

Thank you Shane - from the Heart….This video is the most encouraging, uplifting & down to earth “lesson” I have ever seen. By keeping it simple & being Vulnerable yourself, you help me Validate Myself in a way none of the “Masters” have been ever been able to do. Like you said in the video , it really does have a “Spiritual” aspect to it.

I marked the frets (with a different color) on my slide CBG such that it coincides with typical frets for a mountain dulcimer Mixolydian (?). It's a nice break from "blues".

This is so sweet. It’s about your 3-string cigar box guitar, sure…. But it is about life, about putting this into the human condition. I have watched maybe 100 of your vids. And You are the reason I got obsessed by this and built almost 20 of these things. And keep one right here in the corner, etc. And have a pignose upstairs with that other one I dink around with regularly. When the significant other is not in the house. If you and I lived near each other, we could be very good friends. I know a guy like you, who gets music like you do, who shares it. He does 6-string guitars, and harmonicas. And other stuff. He gathers people together and they play music. He is good friends with Elijah Wald, who stays at his house when EW comes to town. There are some elevated souls who get music. I’d really enjoy an afternoon with you.

Hi Shane, I had an operation last year and since then have lost the desire to play at an Open Mic we have at the local pub. I've started playing slide on a tenor guitar tuned to GDGB while waiting for my cigar box to arrive. I go through the slide exercises by Brent Robitaille in his great book but always end up with the two string run (frets 3,2,1 strings 1 and 3) and then barreing fret 7. Seems to wrap up each little step to getting back on the horse. Cheers.

Hi Shane, have a few 6 string guitars , but was never a great player. Absolutely love the cbg's Ive built and I just bought a Mooer looper pedal to use along with my Vox AD30VT. Doing what you suggest, doodling along the neck & hitting on a nice couple of notes, recording them on the looper, playing along with that & then recording over it, I can really come up with some nice sounds. The Vox has lots of effects built so can use those also. Love your lessons & my biker mate & I really appreciate them. I built him a biker style cbg, so we are struggling along together. I told him its about enjoyment, not comparing yourself with other great cbg players, but persisting and improving our technique. Maybe we wil get to the stage where we can do a dou at one of the biker rally's.....heres hoping. T

The one *MAIN* RIFF that has grabbed my soul is Robin TROWER *Little Bit of Sympathy* even though it's not played on the cigar box guitar --- I have yet to get or play a cigar box guitar 🎸 --- But Samantha Fish is the first person I think of when it comes to the cigar box guitar and her gas ⛽ can guitar. --- Bulletproof, being my favorite so far.
