Stucco finishes failing, why stucco separates.
Folks, we are located in Oakland, CA.
Send pictures to Jay or myself at our sites below for immediate bids.
www.StuccoPlastering.com/ Kirk’s website.
www.GiordanoPlastering.com/ Jason’s Website.
In this how-to video, we explain why stucco failures happen.
Poor adhesion is mainly why stucco and/or paint can separate or blister and fall off walls.
This video explains how to create a good bond for adhering to stucco, primer, and paint.
Here we show a color coat that was separating from the stucco wall.
Any particles, weather dust, moss, or paint must be washed well before any bonding agent is applied to the wall surface. I like to call this process micro-scoring or etching. You use a pressure washer with at least 3,000 psi, plus a turbo tip for washing and scoring or etching the existing paint surface.
However, Qiikrete white bonding agent is sold at all Home Depot, Lowes, and most smaller hardware stores.
It sells for about ten bucks for a pint.
Quikrete bonding agent is just as good, if not better.
When this bonding agent drys, it’s clear and a bit shiny.
• Stucco color finishing... Integrated stucco color finishes.
• Smooth stucco New smooth stucco over rough stucco.
• Repair bad stucco patc... Stucco color finishing correctly.

Like your videos Kirk and appreciate all the knowledge that you're sharing. Helped me to do a couple stucco jobs as I had never done stucco before. One was a 10x10 patch on a wall and the other was 3x3. The bigger one turned out to be a perfect match to the existing stucco which was great as it was a business. The other I couldn't match as I believe it was sprayed on. Many thanks to you and really appreciate your videos

I fill my joints with sikaflex the same way you do Kirk. Sometimes the 1A and other times 15LM for more expansions. Also, I use primer 429/202 if I fill a crack in the foundation. What I do a little bit differently on the joint to make the overcoat stick, I throw sand caliber 24 when the joint is fresh, so it sticks in the sikaflex and makes a grip. Always nice to watch you work!

Hi, I really enjoy your videos. I'm a DIY er in Florida and am trying to stucco to stucco over backboard that replaced a thin piece of tin under my windows of my enclosed sunroom. I have the cement board up. Concerned over how to waterproof it and prep to stucco. It's only 15inches by 67 inches on each side. I've seen you work over concrete wall where you advised NO wire mesh. Thinking of using fiberglass mesh on the backboard. Is the prep for stuccoing same or different?

Kirk Love your videos ... I'm redoing the outside of my concrete stairs ... They were unfortunately painted all over in latex paint by the previous owner, some of the paint is holding moisture & peeling. My question is do I need to remove all the latex paint before applying the bonding agent so I can apply a thin cement coat ..... Wish they would have just left it without paint. 😡😠 Thank you.

Kirk I have the same situation here as Angieb52. Can you apply cement over a bonding agent that hes been applied to a latex painted wall???
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 4 жыл бұрын
Howdy both of you guys, when cement decks, stairs, bricks, cinder blocks have been painted. You first pressure wash with at least 3500 PSI to remove all the dust dirt and grime. Then you allow to dry, the next day, some paint may still lift or peal, no worries, remove any of this with a putty knife, Now, it's time for the bonding agent if stucco is to be applied, If the paint is to be applied the best quality primer money can buy. An important tip, if not properly cleaned or prepared, your next coat of stucco/paint won't adhere forever, as it is only as good as what it's attached to. Great video, once again. Quick question, if the service life of SikaHyflex is 10-20 years, and the service the life of stucco color coat is 60+ years, wouldn't something like a slip joint perform better long-term at the porch/house joint?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 4 жыл бұрын
Good evening Oak Ridge, possibly, however, I was asked to blend the new to the existing, not to perform cutting and installations of slip or expansion joint. This cementitious color coat lasts forever. They lighten with age, but if applied correctly, adhere forever. I was working on a house next door when the fella approached me to fix, he said he had the material, I charged him 200 dollars for this fix, so cutting and installing metals were out of the question. I did this at a low cost to show folks what can be done with a bit of knowledge. Hey Kirk...can you do another video where you repair/resurface concrete landings? Kinda like the porch landing just above the repair you did here in this video...secondly, I have a similar issue with a raised concrete porch on my home here in Baltimore. The original construction was made with some sort of large concrete blocks and now all the seams between the blocks have deteriorated and the old stucco material is flaking out and falling apart, likely from freeze/thaw over the years. Is it best to attach and secure wire mesh over the old and apply another coat of stucco?

I already think I know the answer to my own question (experience) but will ask it any way since it seems to be a problem still for me. How do you keep from flat out making a mess. Either when mixing, or applying it just makes a mess. I occasionally repair chimneys I find it difficult to keep the shingles clean. I use tarps, roof paper, plastic tarps are too slippery, my mud tends to dry too quickly so now I’m misting what I’ve just completed, which soaks the tarps bleeds thru now I’m hosing down the roof for an hour. Any tips with just keeping the area clean and organized. Especially on a pitched shingled roof

Worked on an outdoor kitchen Island with a friend. Metal framed and 1/4" backer board for stucco one end had a foot and a half radius, and I suggested expanded metal with paper behind it to wrap the radius. We ended up cutting the backer board into narrow 4" strips and screwing it on to the studs. Making the smooth circle now choppy. Which method would you have used and why?

In my opinion from a guy who does foundations think it's an area of fail because of the oil on the concrete from the forums when they poured the wall. On the short walls the forums we use are usually on their last leg and the wax backing and extra cool stays on the wall. The original guys should of probably used a hot water soapy pressure wash

After you powerwash painted red/orange brick how long do you wait before applying the bonding agent?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Hello rainy day, FYI, most bonding agents will dry in 20-minutes. If the wall is dry and or in the sun; often as soon as you roll on brush it on the wall, most bonding agents dry within 5 minutes. This is because the bricks, CMU block, and most other surfaces suck the moister/water out of the bonding agent, If the bonding agent. Also if the bonding agent is not completely dry or still tacky, you can still apply stucco or plaster over it. Under no circumstances should you be sneaky or in a hurry or plain stupid and add the bonding agents to any materials including, stucco, plaster, or concrete, this will dilute the bonding agent, making it useless, Always apply to the wall.🍻

I think the problem is down to water egress through the wall under the steps, which has pushed the stucco off the surface. Cannot believe that original contractor didn't clean under the steps before applying the stucco.

What do you do with water stains over a few years on the "maintenance free" finish? See a number of lower sections discolor from water and such. I am considering this, yet I also dont want all that staining look...I have heard and seen of a "Fog finish" over it, but that I am not sure if it is something I want to do every 5 years.

Good morning Phil dude, excellent question.🤔 I'd suggest you wait until it rains for a day or longer, then when still raining, use your water hose with a spray nozzle. Most will come right off, sort of like taking a pan of burnt spaghetti and trying to clean it right away. Bad idea, fill it with water first, let it sit overnight, and most will just come off with water. Let them both soak. Sound weird, it's not as it works. Evening Calvin, somewhat, I have applied American clay, Tadelakt and Eco Stucco more than a few times which all fall in line with your question. They are all pretty, unusual and cheerful in every room except in a shower, in a shower the beauty will be less attractive when a person realizes they need maintenance or they will mold big time. What happens when mold drys and you walk by it? Great question glad you asked,m it becomes airborne thus you inhale this toxin and become ill or run down.
