Man, the stat about americans guessing that 36% of this country are union members when it's only 4% just really fucking hurts. I wish it were as good as 36%. Some locals celebrate when they have even just 20% market share in their state. If you can join a union, do it. We have to raise that 4%.

@drewbabe11 күн бұрын
@@snekkers5600 those three companies combined are not 5% of the american workforce, and also, those companies are just seeing shop unions or the equivalent of guilds. 4% seems too high tbh, it's probably counting police unions (not unions, blue lives don't matter) and teacher's unions (super-established pseudo-unions whose job is to make sure teachers have it just barely not-bad-enough-to-all-strike.) if 4 out of every 100 americans had proper class consciousness then the snowball effect would have already been causing a mass labor movement for the past decade or more and we'd be seeing pinkertons out there cracking heads in the next 6 months. if 9 out of every 100 did, then the IWW would be organizing a general strike and the Maoists and the SRA would be forming militias to hunt down cops. if you told me the actual number is 1% i would be pleasantly surprised, that's how bleak things are. Not gonna lie when you have people who don't read or speak the language they're translating from and too I kinda get why. Getting a brain aneurysm from that stuff isn't worth most reads. Speaking bit of homers greek and being familiar with "the classics" and being able to discuss and generate small talk about them not forgetting philosophers etc.etc. This trend carried across the empire and became a legacy in most anglosphere colonies as a curriculum topic in "better peoples schools" and sort of marker of being cultured. Carried into current day curriculums by that legacy and now as part of English lit teacher asks you to read some translation of Odysseus and Shakespeare which both clearly equals in topic of English as a language.

I think anyone who has gone to a public school in a western nation for an extended period of time should at the very least know what the Odyssey is. If you’re not from the west, I think expecting you to know it is kinda dumb. It’s not like I would expect a white guy to know what Water Margin or the Ramayana are. If you haven’t read the Odyssey yet though, I would recommend Richmond Lattimore’s translation, it’s not as easy to read as Emily Wilson’s but the content is incredible. I read it when I was a senior in high school and only had minor trouble understanding some parts that google solved pretty quickly.

ok look i cant tell if unwind was supposed to be anti-abortion (it couldve just kinda flew over my head because i Would go "oh well of course this is different from abortion because x, duh" and not even consider the possibility) but i read the whole series as a kid and it was actually kind of good and it was more about kids rebelling against society and corporations and escaping their parents it only makes sense as an anti-abortion metaphor if one views abortion to be caused by companies bribing/controlling the government + society being scared of a revolution ...which. is . unfortunately something people might actually beleive. so i guess i cant rule out it being an anti-abortion metaphor. but its at least a LOT more unlikely than it seems on the face of it.
