Longmont, CO here. I like Patagonia Quandary pants, they're thin and flexible, breath well, dry fast, and with long johns the combo keeps you warm. Folding a cuff in them keeps them out of the chain. I've ridden with the Quandary pants commando at 40f deg with a Brooks B-17, and down to 25f with Patagonia poly long johns. ☮

A thin light wind resistant quick drying baseball cap with earflaps preferably lined with Brynje or other fishnet is my holy grail of head wear. When its snowy/raining the bigger brim just shelters your glasses and face alot better than cycling cap brims.

Thank you for the great info! I love your baseball hat with the flaps and have been wondering where I could get one. You should make this a merch item for your channel! It would be awesome!

Back in the 90s I would ride year round in Iowa. As long as it was 10 degrees or over I simply wore jeans, t-shirt, hoodie and a hockey jersey. The big thing was wind-proof gloves. I also taped off the front vents in my helmet.

L.L. Bean Knife's Edge pants were my go to pants for fat biking. I've dropped 36ish pounds since winter and I swim in mine, sadly been discontinued by Bean's and not much out there for them used on eBay. I picked up some Knaughtvind pants on a clearance sale and will try them out. I dress pretty lightly until below 15F, then add Meriano wool base layer under my pants and a tshirt under my Meriano wool top and uninsulated soft shell jacket. If needed, I add a packable vest for the first mile or so.

I bike commute year round and yes, ski pants work just as well if not better than those so-called waterproof bike pants. Whatever keeps water out and heat in will do.

For FP I usually take a thermarest closed cell foam pad (ridge rest or z lite) one rolls up and other one is like an accordion… but they’re pretty much the same… ill be at FP, say hello if you see me :)

What would you recommend for someone that has allergies to wool?
@DirtyTeethMTB26 күн бұрын
The synthetic materials still wick well, they just get stinkier than wool… just don’t wear cotton 🤙 ride on!!
@teleotto25 күн бұрын
Check out Helly Hansen Merino. The dual layer type with polypropylene on the inside. Or just a thin synthetic under your wool.

For me, cold weather riding is all about keeping the wind out. Windproof jacket, mittens, & boots are the main things or I’m a goner.

I used to sweat because of too many layers. I started just wearing a merino wool medium weight base layer and my winter riding jacket, that’s it! I was surprised how warm I stayed, I believe because I wasn’t sweating.
@mrcha0s26 күн бұрын
@jimp65 yeah, that's what I do now. Literally wear light clothes. When I run it's even worse. T-shirt and shorts no matter how cold it is
@DirtyTeethMTB26 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing… I’m a heavy sweater too, and ill still get a little damp, but this system still keeps me warm… and as long as I slow the exertion down for 5-10 min before I’m gonna finish or stop for a while, I dry out pretty well - ride on!

Snow biking is extremely fun and you do lose more weight than you'd think. That's what I tell my coworkers when they say I'm crazy. I get the trails and roads to myself and snow biking is like gravel riding except on ice and snow.
