This came out in '74, so at the time, all those artists their singing about really just died a few years before. It's great that you know a lot of the artists they're mentioning since you've been doing your show on KZbin. Gives you some perspective of just how loved each of them was and what they meant to the world of music.

Actually they added a verse to include Jim Croce in the song. The Righteous Brothers were not the original of this song. Climax, famous for their 1972 hit, "Precious and Few", released the original version of "Rock and Roll Heaven" in 1973. Jim Croce was still alive at the time, so obviously he wasn't included in Climax's original version ..... The Climax single failed to chart, so a lot of people are not aware that the song was originally by Climax.

In a fact known by few, the song was written by Alan O'Day, who had a #1 hit, himself, "Undercover Angel" in 1977, and also wrote Helen Reddy's #1 "Angie Baby" in '74. "R'n'R Heaven" was co-written by Johnny Stevenson, a singer and keyboardist. Climax ("Precious and Few," #3 in 1972) actually were the first to record the song, but their version failed to chart. Re-forming in 1974, The Righteous Brothers were presented with the song as a possible cover to record, but Bill originally balked, thinking it lacked the "old Righteous Brothers feel." Noted songwriters and producers, Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, had just begun their own label, Haven, a Capitol Records affiliate, and they substituted the verses referencing Buddy Holly and Richie Valens (as they appeared in the Climax version), citing their inclusion in Don McLean's "American Pie." As Bobby Darin and Jim Croce had passed within 3 months of each other in late '73 since the Climax recording, Lambert & Potter added references to those two artists, and also produced The Righteous Brothers' cover of the song. FYI: Lambert & Potter, longtime recording artists in their own right (together and separately), have written and produced for (among many others) The Grass Roots, Hall and Oates, Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds, Gayle McCormick, the Four Tops, Dusty Springfield, Richard Harris, and Glen Campbell. In fact, Lambert & Potter were nominated for a Grammy for producing "Rhinestone Cowboy" in 1975. Lambert, born in New York, is 74, and he and the UK-born Potter, 82, are working on a Broadway musical called "Score."

Since this song was made in 1974, they could not put the biggest star that died. I’m talking about the great Elvis Presley who died in August of 1977. That was one of the worst days of my life. I cried and cried. I was 15 years old and people at school would make fun of me because I was a big fan of Elvis. The kids did not realize the impact the Elvis was in the music business. Mind you I went to school with quite a few famous metal/hard rock guitar players. So the kids were more into that. Don’t get me wrong I love Metallica, testament, primus and blind illusion. Lunchtime bands were great. But my love for Elvis was something I shared with my late father. He promised to take me to Vegas to see Elvis when I turned 21, but that never happened. Thank you for playing one of my favorite songs of 1974. Gosh I can’t believe it has been 47 years since rock n roll heaven came out. Rest In Peace Bobby Hatfield, you gave us a great song.

Elvis' death hit my Dad really hard, as he spent his adult life loving everything Elvis. Back then, I didn't have an appreciation for Elvis because, like the typical child, rejected whatever their parents liked. I was more into Zeppelin, Sabbath, and other hard rock bands of the 70s. I'm so glad that as I got older, I was able to greatly expand my musical tastes!

The Righteous Brothers were a cover version, but they had the best version. The original version was by Climax, an uncharted single in 1973, a year after their top-5 hit, "Precious and Few". The big thing I love about the cover by The Righteous Brothers is that they added the verse about Jim Croce, who was my first musical hero. Jim Croce was still alive when Climax released their original version in 1973.
