The only part I like better about the re-recording is the 2nd time he sings “I’ve hungered, HUNGERED for your touch”. For some reason it just has so much power and emotion in that version. Bobby Hatfield & Bill Medley had an agreement that they would each have one solo song on every album they put out. They both wanted to do Unchained, wanted very, VERY badly to sing it. Neither of them would give in so they decided to let a coin toss decide for them. That coin should be on display at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Many sang it before Bobby did and many sang it afterwards, but no one before or after has ever come close to the magnificence of Mr. Hatfield's performance. He also had an upper respiratory infection at the time, a cold or bronchitis? Aside from suffering from extreme stage fright, losing his lunch before every show, and his mother was in the audience watching her 25-year-old boy singing live for the first time; he was very worried about disappointing her. I think it's safe to say that he did not disappoint anyone that night. One person said that this song was responsible for a 9% increase in the population nine months later. It was also said, that after the applause died down, if one listened very, very closely, they could hear the sound of dozens upon dozens of damp panties hitting the floor ...?

Thank you for playing this beautiful love song that was written in 1955 by Mr. Alex North for a movie that didn't do so called "Unchained" and yea also was the most played song in the Twentieth Century in America, throughout Canada and the U.K. Yes over 670 other artists performed this song including Elvis Presley but Bobby Hatfield's in my opinion was the best. Anyway, could you please play another solo by Bobby Hatfield called "Summertime"1965. I'd appreciate it. The Righteous Brothers were Bill Medley (the tall, dark-haired one with the bass-baritone voice) and Bobby Hatfield, seen performing Unchained Melody solo with his high tenor voice with the remarkable falsetto range. Bobby had another solo hit as a member of the Righteous Brothers called "Ebb Tide." There's no live performance of him doing it on KZbin (don't be fooled, there's a live performance of a guy who looks like him and does a credible job of imitating him on KZbin, but he's not Bobby Hatfield), but there are some videos of the studio recording. The two of them first broke out with their first hit, "LIttle Latin Lupe Lu," written by Bill Medley. "Lovin' Feelin'" was their first #1 hit and it went on to become the most played song on American radio in the 20th century (and deservedly so). Their follow-up to "Lovin' Feelin'" was "Just Once In My Life," which only one reactor has done a video to so far. Then came "Unchained Melody" and "Ebb Tide." Their next big hit was "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration," which also ushered in their time on a new record label, MGM/Verve. Unfortunately, they weren't able to recapture the same magic after "Soul and Inspiration" and their popularity waned. Bill Medley released a solo hit under his own name called "Brown Eyed Woman." An excellent video of him performing it with the Blossoms is on KZbin, and no reactor has yet done a video to it. The song is about interracial relationships and was released just a few months after the Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling in Loving v. Virginia which cleared the way for interracial marriage in the US. In 1974, Bill and Bob released "Rock and Roll Heaven," which was their last big hit together. "Unchained Melody" was re-released when it became popular as part of the "Ghost" movie soundtrack. Bill Medley recorded "Time of My Life" with Jennifer Warnes. But that was pretty much it for the Righteous Brothers. They were inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 where they performed "Lovin' Feelin'" again with the Paul Shaffer band, which did a remarkable job of recreating the sound of the original backing track from the single. Bobby, who had lost most of his range by then, did a nice job with Bill performing the song that night, and it's on KZbin. Well worth digging up. Sadly, Bobby died of a heart attack later that year following a cocaine overdose. Bill Medley still performs with a new partner, Bucky somebody, under the name the Righteous Brothers in Las Vegas and can still sing. And on many nights, he performs his own rendition of Unchained Melody as a tribute to his dearly departed "brother," Bobby Hatfield.

One addition to your summary. After going their separate ways around 1969 they reconnected in ‘73 and, as you say, had the “Rock and Roll Heaven” hit in ‘74. In January of ‘76 Bill’s ex wife was murdered. Bill stopped performing at that point for a number of years to raise their young son, thusly ending their hit making years. They resumed singing together in the eighties. (The murder was not solved until 2017. There is video of Bill at a press conference thanking the police if anyone is interested. )

Bobby Hatfield though took it to another level! And this is the best version by far. "Unchained" was a prison movie...and the song is essentially about a prisoner singing about his love for his woman...and praying that she will still be his. The lyrics are spot on...the longing...the loneliness...the uncertainty. A beautiful melody and lyrics.
