While they weren't actually related, they were the first group to be called "blue-eyed soul" back in the day. They got their name when, playing at a military base, some African-American marines shouted out "man, you sound righteous, brother!". The name stuck. If you watch the very beginning of the video, it states "December 1964". If you liked this song, then check out Soul and Inspiration; it was written by the same writers as Loving Feeling and they wrote it as a follow-up to the success of this song. Soul and Inspiration also peaked at #1 for three straight weeks in 1966.

There's a ton to think about when you perform together, harmonies, singing in unison, understanding the play and dynamics of what you can do individually and together, knowing when to give the line to the other guy. Not to mention knowing when to step back entirely and have the other guy sing the whole song, because it just feels right. These guys are total masters of that whole deal. Very sad to learn here that one of them is dead, beautiful singers.

This song came out in 1964. The Temptations and The Righteous Brothers were contemporaries. I saw them twice on the same bill during the time. The Temps were doing "Why You Want To Make Me Blue" and "The Way You Do The Things You Do". They both came after Smokey Robinson had his first hits such as the great "Ooh, Baby Baby" and "I'll Try Something New". David's voice was rougher and he had an amazing falsetto. Bill Medley is still alive and occasionally performing today at the ripe young age of 80 years. Bobby Hatfield died in 2003.

Ruffin was just starting with the Temps when this song was recorded, so they were on the charts at the same time for the next few years. This is one of the Righteous Brothers' first TV appearance, and most kids had only heard them on the radio and probably thought they were black. That's why the clever intro, with them in the dark in the beginning of the song, then lighting them up one at a time. Their influences were the same ones we all had in those days - the blues and soul singers of the fifties. The term "Blue-Eyed Soul" was invented for them.
