Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained and as voted for by everyone in the latest poll, today we’ll be exploring The Ring, the 2002 supernatural horror directed by Gore Verbinski. The film is essentially a remake of Hideo Nakata’s amazing 1998 Japanese horror, based on Koji Suzuki’s eponymous novel. As such, we’ll be noting some of the major differences between the three as we go through this video, especially at the end to avoid spoilers.
First published in 1991, Koji’s novel is a dark ride into resentment and how that can spread like a malevolent disease. Set in modern-day Japan, when four teenagers mysteriously die simultaneously, a reporter named Kazuyuki Asakawa hears about one of the deaths from his taxi driver and begins a personal investigation into the matter. As the case begins taking a sinister turn with the discovery of a mysterious tape, Kazuyuki recruits the help of his oddball friend, Ryuji Takayama (a former doctor turned philosophy professor) to solve the riddle.
There are quite a few key differences between the novel and the 1998 film adaptation. Most notably, in the novel Asakawa is a man named Kazuyuki, while in the film Asakawa is a woman named Reiko. (For the purposes of the explanation, we will use Koji to represent his main character). Kazuyuki also has a wife and daughter in the novel, while in the 98 film, Reiko is divorced from Ryuji, with whom Reiko shares a boy named Yoichi.
Taking this dynamic and many of the cues found in Nakata’s film, (which we’ll be discussing later in the video) Verbinski’s movie is more of a loose adaptation of an adaptation, then a true representation of the novel.

@@leiferickson1016 hmm well I SAW “It Follows” too and the protagonist in that movie was basically FORCED to do it. It was no accident because the guy explained how the entity follows you to her at the start of the film. He already told her to answer. So she then had to search for someone to pass the STD to. And once the new person has it, it’s their problem now kinda like in Ring, that no doubt partially inspired the 2012 film (or 2011 can’t remember)

@lessismore8533
@lessismore8533 Жыл бұрын
@@sean5558 the original Samara in the Japanese ring (Sadako) of course had a different back story. Unlike the US franchise , Ringu had a prequel movie. she was just a regular girl before she was killed. Not a threat at all and had powers she couldn’t control but instead of getting her help they just killed her In the USA version, they changed it to where Samara was always causing trouble BUT there’s no real proof if she was born with this intention. We KNOW she was like 8/10 before death so at that age sure she knew what she was doing but you can’t count an infant having that intention as they’re just baby. Many ppl don’t know “The Ring2” scene where Evelyn said “because my baby told me to”. Her birth mother implied her daughter told her in a dream to drown her. She knew what was coming and had no control over being born with a demonic entity inside her. Quite sad actually. I wish the US version had a prequel so more ppl can see the *truth* cus not everyone saw The Ring 2.

There were manga (Japanese comic) adaptions of the Ring which were different as well. I think all the films (English and Japanese) and manga all had sequels as well which took their concepts in different directions. It's an interesting, though terrifying, concept to explore, and arguably highlighted some of the problems of "going viral" before the idea even existed. It would be difficult to do a "modern" adaption today, as everything is so repeatable, instant and "viral" by default in terms of media. The slow process of VHS duplication was kind of unique historically and just worked so well for those themes.

@@SpikeTheWolf You could translate "Uzumaki" into "spiral" in English. It's about the main characters going insane and seeing spirals everywhere to the point of madness. There's a lot more to it, but I don't want to spoil it. The artist will put casual, natural spirals all over the place in the backgrounds of their art, and you begin to wonder whether it's just a natural swirl or something more sinister as the plot goes on. If you enjoyed "The Ring", you will probably like it, or any of Junji Ito's work. ;-)

I really love this, never would've guessed that Anna killed herself to reunite with the ocean entity that was brilliant of you to say! Have you also seen the deleted scenes of The Ring 2002 it really gives better insight to the first movies world alot more as well as non-canonically (as ring two and rings retcons) revealing Samara was Anna Morgan's daughter and that she gave birth to her through "unnatural means" Verbinski's film really had the best lore compared to the retcons Ring Two and both Rings 2005 & 2017 gave. I really wish Gore Verbinski would make his own legacy sequel to the ring that'll ignore the sequels even though I kinda like them, ive seen interviews when his movie Cure for wellness came out, some interviewers ask him if he'll see Rings but he said no he's not invested in it so I'm guessing he'd rather let his film's open ending infer to us as an audience that her curse will always spread with malevolence and hatred to no end.

In light of what this video let's us know about the original novel, and the allusion to Samara being born of a human and an elemental being, I guess this sort of makes Samara a kind of demi-goddess, but twisted and cursed, not meant for this realm, and not meant to be raised by humans. I'm not surprised that I never considered Samara to literally be not fully human when I first watched the movie, and after subsequent viewings, but it makes complete sense. She doesn't require sleep, she has incredible psychic power. Obviously her body could only hold out for so long in the well, but _seven days?_ Think about that. A regular person would be dead in 48 hours, after drowning from exhaustion. She sort of reminds me of Loki's child in the Ritual, a being of immense power, but a freakish horror. At least in the Ritual, the monster is confined to the forest.

I saw this movie by accident when I was about 5 or 6 years old and it single handedly is the reason I love horror movies and at the same time I will never rewatch this movie because it’s burned into my brain and the scariest thing ever.

The scariest part of this movie was when Samara came out of the T.V. It was a breaking down of the fourth wall, basically saying "hey this evil thing can come out of this movie and get to you too". This movie messed me up. Still can't watch it today.

My cousin was in like, 3rd grade when this movie came out and it scared the absolute shit out of him. He slept with the lights on, always needed someone to go to the bathroom with him during the day and night, and would literally cry if you refused to accompany him anywhere. 2 years later, The Grudge was released and he was even more scared. His sister's boyfriend was such a douche and would mess with him all the time by saying the ghosts were coming after him, or by putting on wigs with long black hair and crawling creepily towards him. It got to the point to where he was just urinating in his pants cause he was too scared to be alone, even for just a minute. Poor kid.

a sentient resentful smallpox virus is more frightening than any curse. I'm reminded of a japanese yurei who's name i can't remember. it rose from unburied smallpox victims, and then circled the city where the virus was breaking out screaming "HOW LONG HOW LONG?!" and would continue to scream in the sky until the body it came from was buried.

Saw parts of the movie as a child. It scared the living shit out of me and for a long time afterwards, I refused to watch VHS tapes. Similar to one of the Final Destination movies, the Ring had a huge impact on me and influenced me. To this day I refuse to watch parts of the movie, even though I am a horror fan.

I remember when KZbin was new, my friend showed me a weird, freaky black and white short movie. When I saw The Ring months later in the theater I couldn't help but snicker upon seeing clips from the movie showed as the video tape that kills you. I'm sure you can still find the full movie (maybe 3 minutes long?) on the site somewhere.

Still one of the scariest movies I've ever seen though 10/10

I actually had a movie idea where the son had psychic powers like sadako, witnessed his family die from the virus, him being the only one able to stop it since he is the only person with psychic abilities trying to prevent the virus and other people from watching it, however it does spread and he keeps trying to remove as many people from the virus itself while sadako kills people he couldn’t save in time, this would be a horror thriller and could lead to perhaps a trilogy where it ends with him not being able to stop the virus as it’s spread too far so he ends up watching it himself so he could take the fight to her psychic vs psychic, ending up with him finally defeating her but at the cost of his life and the last remaining psychic

The theme of the ring is the horror of death - both it's inevitability for us, and how we will inevitably see it happen to others. It's about how the trauma of death is real and we can't escape it, and how watching someone die or losing someone we love is traumatic but unavoidable. The horror is coming to terms with that.

"in the space of half a year everybody in Japan would have become a carrier" Oh, no, it would be a matter of weeks. And that is from the time of inception. It would take on week for the first batch to die, and the next batch wouldn't waste ANY time. And within a week EVERYONE would be trapped. You can only fold a piece of paper in half 8 times. Likewise, when you double something, it accelerates at insane rates 1*2=2, 2*2=4, 4*2=16, 16*2=32, 32*2=64 and so on; in just 5 steps I have gone from 1 to 64, and it doesn't stop at 64.

I'm genuinely curious as to the Yamamura relationship between mother and daughter. Did Sadako resent her mother? There's two Ring(u) sequals: one that follows Loop and the other that differs immensely. I have seen Ringu 2, which has Yoichi being essentially being haunted/controlled by Sadako until she's at last put at peace. I have only seen a half of Loop, both being on youtube. Apparently, Loop was so disliked that they remade the sequel so I wonder just how many have seen Sadako in a new body and just how many have only seen possessed!Yoichi.

I have a copy of the special edition of the Ring, which came with the original Japanese version, the American version, and a short film "Rings", which took place in between the first and second Ring movies. There was also an extra DVD that came with both versions of the cursed film, and boy let me tell you that the Japanese version is much, much tamer. As an added note, right after my cousin and I watched the cursed film, we got a call from an unlisted number. Let's just say that I didn't bother answering. I also saw "The Ring" in theaters with my mother when it first came out. A couple days later she went to get her picture taken for her Driver's License renewal, and the first shot had very much the same distorted effect as those affected by the fillm's curse.

The "ringu virus" from the book would get extinct quite quickly. Soon everyone in the world would have seen it or refuse to see videotapes, a bunch of people would die and everyone else would be imune. Of course it would be a disaster, but a sort lived one.
