Say what you want about Samara being evil and all that but you can't deny she is one creative and hardworking ghost. Think about it, the Grudge? She just lies around her attic all day. Beetlejuice? Lazy and incompetent, can't take his job seriously for one second. And some ghosts (I'm not naming names) don't even know they're ghosts for fucks sake. But Samara is not only out there actively haunting people every day, she takes extra care to make sure each haunting is unique, and is always looking for exciting new ways to express herself through film and through murdering. Samara puts all of her creative energy into everything she does, so for her, sucking out someone's soul is not just a fun hobby. It's an art form.

At 12:45, There is a point in the movie where they DO show the face of the dead guy sitting on the spinning chair. It's when they watch a video of the killer girl being interviewed. In the video, the guy says something like "You don't like to hurt anyone do you?" and then the girl says "But I do." Right when she says that, you'll see quick clips. The first one being the dead girl in the closet and the next one being the guy on the chair with his face in full view. Most people who watched the movie never caught it because his face didn't look as bad as the dead girl in the closet. My opinion :D

I remember when I worked in a psychiatric hospital in 2003 or so they actually showed this movie one night in the teenagers wing. As long as the movie was not rated R they were allowed to watch whatever they wanted for some reason. The nurse running the unit that night actually brought this movie in and let the teens watch this. The whole night the kids were freaking out, demanding to call their parents at odd hours, we had to restrain and sedate a few of them. The next day that policy changed, no more movies unless the director of the hospital saw them.

TL;DR Read the Ring Cycle books for the whole story. They took quite a few liberties in the movies. In the book the reasons why become a lot clearer. Samara/Sadako was a strong psychic, stronger than her mother. When her mother got ridiculed at a demonstration with skeptics present, Samara killed them. Everyone believed the mother had. She was shunned and ended up jumping off a cliff with a single tree on it. (A scene from the original video where you see a woman jumping to her death). Sadako was taken in by a doctor who studied the paranormal. He didn't treat her well. When he got scared of her powers and what she knew (she was abused by him if I remember correctly, she could end his career as a renowned doctor), he threw her in a well to perish and sealed it with a stone slab (the ring you see at the end). In the original you see what you initially think is a lunar eclipse, but it turns out to be the mouth of the well being sealed against a bright sunny sky. In the video there are black frames in regular intervals, like a person blinking. Sadako didn't die, she survived in the well long enough to project what happened to her onto a video that was in a recorder in a cabin that was built above the well (a decade plus after). As she had been infected with a highly contagious virus during her abuse, she didn't only project her thoughts, but the virus as well. Hence the copy and spread the video bit. The moving mirror between the mother and the empty room (Sadako as a child in the original) is a test of strength between the two psychics. Sadako's anger grew with every day she lived in the well (over a decade's worth of burning fury). She decided to kill using her psychic powers as she had done before, to take revenge for what had been done to her. The projection is the manifestation of her psychic powers that escapes the video and climbs out of the TV. Also in the original, only the phone in the cabin above the well rings. If the infected are not there to pick it up, they won't get the message. The Ring is a trillogy and pretty bleak to be honest, with the video spreading at ever increasing speed all around the country as more and more are "infected". I can highly recommend the books, they really are incredibly well written and so much more detailed than the films.
@wistian62455 жыл бұрын
It kind of would've been better if the ring was actually a solar eclipse imo. Although the covering of the well was ingenious.

I was obsessed with this movie when I was like 5 or 6 and watched it for about two solid weeks straight (shout out to my parents for their logical thinking) and then I had nightmares for a month and to this day I can't sleep alone without the TV on, and I'm 19. Funny thing is I think my brain repressed my memory of the film itself because I can barely remember anything about it other than the general premise.

I even got the spooks watching this. The only horror film that came somewhat close to giving me this much fear was Jacob's Ladder which, imo, is a better movie overall, though not quiiiiite as scary for me.

The thing I really love about this film is how clever it is. On the surface its a horror movie, however in reality its more of a (supernatural) mystery drama. Yes it is scary on the first viewing, but on subsequent viewings you see a truly sad story that I think manages to use symbolism in a way that is both deep and not pretentious - a very unusual achievement. Frankly, if it wasn't for the horror element I think this would appeal far more to those that like the intricate plot of a mystery drama, but the horror just gives the whole thing a raw edge which I love.
@dearhyo9 жыл бұрын
you've just worded everything good about this film in a way I could not, nicely done.
@31webseries9 жыл бұрын
+QuantumOverlord I agree, it definitely works on multiple levels. But, I think perhaps it's the horror element that actually keeps it from becoming pretentious. Mixing genres can often be a great way to present deeper issues in a less preachy ways than straight drama or arthouse. Plus, the audience (and hence box office) for horror is generally far larger than the audience for mystery drama. Plus this way they get fans of both.
@DCreed0139 жыл бұрын
+QuantumOverlord You should try taking a look a the Japanese 1998 version that this one is based off of (and possible the book that the movie is based on). I believe there's also a sequel to the Japanese version called Rasen. From what I can tell, it's less of horror and more of the supernatural mystery in that version.
@QuantumOverlord9 жыл бұрын
31webseries Don't get me wrong, I am not critical of the horror element (which is unusual in of itself - I'm usually critical of everything!), I just think that the audience who will truly appreciate the film will be very niche - i.e fans of both high brow drama and high quality horror. Unfortunately horror fans may think the film boring, and drama fans may be scared shitless and not make it through 10 minutes!

+Razza Clarke U guys know what happens if u just destroy the tape? I mean why don't u just watch it, Copy to survive then destroy them both? Or does she still kill u if u do that?
@devildogwhite9 жыл бұрын
+Bigery Well the second movie kind of addresses why you don't want to destroy the tape, but eh, the movie sucked so maybe nothing that happened in it even counts.

I’d be that guy to be so petty about my fate I’d drive the tape around on a tv attached to a generator in a pick up truck and pay people to watch it.
