The Paramount Network's "Yellowstone" was some of the most-watched TV of 2021, and there's so much more to come. With one spin-off underway and another in the queue, "Yellowstone" is showing no signs of slowing down. Taylor Sheridan's Western drama is all about the owners of the largest ranch in Montana, the Duttons, and the people who make the ranch run, like Rip Wheeler, the ranch foreman. A rugged anti-hero type, Wheeler acts as an enforcer for John Dutton, the clan's patriarch, which means he gets into his share of trouble. This is the Rip scene that went too far on "Yellowstone."

In the 90s I worked fire and forestry in the rural west with loggers and cowboys and bikers and ex-cons. There were incredible fights sometimes. I was 19, and my first summer there I lifted weights nonstop to go from 170lbs to 220, because I was constantly ready to fight these kind of guys. Later, on a different crew, I got the shit beat out of me so badly it changed my life…changed jobs, moved…etc. All because some new guy had to prove what a badass he was. People from outside that kind of world might think it’s unrealistic, but the gnarly fights in this show and the dynamics involved reminded me a lot of my old life working in the woods with a bunch of maniacs. Just my $0.02. 🤷‍♂️

Loved the whole story arc. People either liked it or not. Many that didn't claim it was unnecessary and "didn't further the story or move it along". Yet it did. It didn't "move along" any storyline but... It established how far Rip would go as enforcer. It spotlighted how deep the love between Rip and Lloyd went with Rip telling Lloyd damn you for making me do this (paraphrased). I liked it because it showed life in a hard world. Lloyd to his credit took it like a man. I think even Walker learned a lesson from it. Part of Walker didn't believe how deep things were. He is a man, but has a child's side. He was given a chance and told to go away. he knew the score. He came back to the area and was spotted. Like a kid, he was testing his boundaries. Did they really mean it? Yes, Walker needs to grow up and is finding out he is in a grown up world. There is nothing I didn't like about the whole arc and how it played out.

You'll never hear me complain about Rip. The man is an honorable, devoted, and loyal badass! His scenes are some of the very best in the entire series. It hurt him deeply to do what he did to Lloyd. But he had to drive his point home and as you could tell, Lloyd understood completely because he's also honorable, devoted and loyal.
@siqck
@siqck 2 жыл бұрын
I have a real problem with you calling this character honorable, loyal, or devoted. Firstly, I strongly suggest you look up the word honorable, you seem entirely confused on the definition, it is laughable to call him honorable, because this mans behavior is consistently deplorable, and those words are kind of mutually exclusive in this context. Secondly, where is this loyalty? I see nothing I would describe about his character as loyal, he is a living tool of John Dutton, a man who is loyal to no one say for his home the Dutton family ranch, which is a geographical location, even if it is the largest in the state, and it isn't alive. Loyalty is for the living, one cannot be loyal to the earth, wood, and steel no matter what they may constitute or be constructed into you cannot meaningfully be loyal to a thing. Now let me ask you to what or whom is he devoted to? Anything beyond a narrow personal circle of people who he is willing to break at a word from his master? You need better characters in your life, this person has no virtue other then a code, he has the unthinking loyalty of a dog who doesn't know his owner is an abusive monster, who makes him fight other dogs, and in that way he is no different from any other true believing fundamentalist who is willing to kill in the name of their idea of right. Furthermore, even if he was truly any those things John Dutton is a sociopathic murder who says things like "You can’t reason with evil, son. Evil wants what it wants and won’t stop until it has won or you kill it. To kill it is to be meaner than evil...that you can be meaner than evil and still love your family and still enjoy a sunrise.” hilarious in the context of this having been ancestral native land at one time. There is no meaner than evil, that is still just evil. So the Duttons are evil murders, as their parents were before them, and their children will likely be after them, and John Dutton once said "...your children would be better off without you" as he makes a man dig his own grave is both ironic and ridiculous. He is helping to perpetuate a cycle of violence and evil, he is dishonorable, and a waste of life.

Rip is a soldier, he undertook his orders as much as it made him sick to do it, but order must be maintained and John knew it. Lloyd is also a soldier and he knows the rules after 30 years of it - including being a lethal enforcer of them, he also knew Rip was effectively his commander. They showed each other a great deal of respect given the situation so there was absolutely nothing personal about it. John made an example of the last man standing even though it was one of his oldest & most loyal men - so there was no winner in the situation no matter who you are or where you finished up. Whilst it was cold & brutal for everyone it was a lesson in leadership, if you fight each other there won't be someone left to have your back when the time comes and it will come. Divided we fall....

Oh please. If you’ve been watching a show in it’s entirety you would notice Lloyd and Rip have a deep bond. It was obvious to me that it hurt them both deeply to have to fight each other.. Rip and Lloyd are the two strongest cowboys on the ranch other than John himself. So he had to use them to make an example for the others, especially considering the way they are always drinking whiskey and playing poker into the wee hours of the night, it would be easy for them to get in fights over stupid stuff all the time if there wasn’t some sense of order maintained.

I broke a friend's hand in high school (doing horseplay, more or less), and he had at least two surgeries to repair it. It seemed like a bruise at a time but ended up being more difficult to heal than a bad arm or leg break, as far as I could tell. I'm not a very nice man, but I wouldn't stomp someone's hand unless somehow I thought my own life was in danger. The real problem with Yellowstone is the entire series. Rip is the “Fear” of the ranch. He enforces Johns will no matter what it is, even when it hurts him physically or emotionally. The first rule of the Yellowstone is “No Fighting”, and rip is the enforcer of that rule more than anything else, and he cannot be shown to have any favourites, the rule is the same for everyone, including Lloyd. If you’ve watched the show, when Rip has to step in, he is fast, extremely aggressive, and overly destructive, but it’s a very quick beat down, only lasting a few seconds. He does as much damage as he can in as short a time period as possible to remind everyone, and have a lasting consequence (ei. Black eye, busted hand, destroyed kitchen) that if you fight on the Yellowstone, Rip will come for you to even the score. Also, this scene showed, to me at least, that contrary to how he comes across, that Rip doesn’t actually like fighting, or any other form of hurting others, and instead does it out of necessity or because he was asked to, and not for his own pleasure. In my head, although it hasn’t been mentioned, I don’t think Rip would have asked John to be the ranch’s enforcer, and instead was asked to do it by John, and Rip accepted it. This arc showed layers to all three of them. Lloyd was shown that even after 30 years he can still be impulsive. Walker showed that he’s a bit of a child, but can bury the hatchet and forgive, and Rip was shown that although he may not show it, he feels bad when he has to hurt someone (lloyd more than others perhaps, but still feels something)

The real beef between Lloyd and Walker was when Walker got his guitar and started playing DON’T FEAR THE REAPER. Lloyd said the song needed MORE COWBELL. Walker said the song was fine the way it was and told Loyd to mind his own business. Lloyd then DEMANDED MORE COWBELL. Walker then yelled, ‘SHUT UP OLD MAN!” That was more than Lloyd could take. And THAT’S when Lloyd stabbed Walker with a knife. Later, when Lloyd presents Walker with a new guitar, there was an important part that was deleted. Walker was so honored by Lloyd’s gift, that he presented Lloyd with a COWBELL. And that cowbell can be seen on an actual cow in a later episode. So now you know.

Who ever was narrating this was wrong. It was about family loyalty… once branded , you are family. And when things get out of hand, you “nip it in the bud” as Barney Fife said many times… it was not taken too far. Who ever posted this video is a big baby. 👶🍼 This entire series is all about taking things “too far” . If it’s not oversized nobody will watch it. This is not censored and diluted television as we see on the major networks… it’s about the dark sides of family and business relationships. The dark sides are not always pretty, but they can be pretty interesting..

It's quite simple: Option A: Lloyd is the last man standing and Rip smashing his hand is already the example that should be made. And it's easier for Rip to "steer" the example and carry it out himself on his friend than to watch what Mr Dutton does to Lloyd. Option B: By Rip smashing Lloyd's hand, Lloyd is unable to continue fighting and Lloyd and Walker walk out of the ring together. In this way, Rip skilfully avoids having to make an example.

The narrator saying Lloyd was punished for doing what he was told to do (fight Walker in the pit) is way off. Lloyd was punished for breaking the no fighting rule not only once but twice within a short period of time. The thought process was that the loser of the fight in the pit was punished enough and the winner may have been beat up , they technically won the fight , but there’s no room for pride or celebration in this scenario for winning that fight … so the winner had to be humiliated and humbled as well to understand the rules are the rules and they are not meant to be broken. Also, it wasn’t some insane act for John to make those two fight , it’s what has to happen sometimes between two guys to get their anger out and move forward instead of letting the anger eat at them for weeks/months/years. As you saw in later scenes it worked out nicely as Lloyd bought Walker a guitar and from what we see in the series they seem to be on good terms now, something that probably wouldn’t have happened unless they fought it out.

Exactly! John told Rip to make an example out of them, so he did. After he did, he showed remorse when he walked to the side of the barn and put his head in his hands. Let’s put it this way. If you are working with a bunch of people and there are no managers or Human Resources, you have to take care of issues on the job site. So in an exaggerated scenario where murders and crimes are taking place, when one guy starts fighting with another guy, you let them deal with their shit. But to ensure that it doesn’t happen again? How can someone do that? By beating the pride out of the winner. Fights all end in everyone getting their ass kicked, so fighting is way less likely to happen if there are no winners.

I reject your rationalization of Rip beating the H*ll out of Llyod. The fight was over; Llyod won; and they should all have gone about their business. There was no misbehavior by Lloyd to justify Rip taking him down and possibly crippling his one hand for life,
@fsttag1
@fsttag1 Жыл бұрын
@@sonofizzy except that he broke the rule of no fighting, not to mention he’d stabbed what’s his name in the chest because he was caught up in his own feelings. Criminals don’t punish employees like a company would or like a construction crew would. If you have information that could take all of us down, and you go breaking rules and leading your choices with your emotions, you have to be dealt with. In the mob, Lloyd would have been killed. He felt happy to win, he was proud. And that would have led to more complications for the ranch down the road. So rip squashed it right there by beating the pride out of Lloyd and reminding him exactly what he’s a part of. If you’ve never been part of a criminal organization or if you can’t empathize with the situation, that’s okay. But rip did what needed to be done in my opinion.
@sonofizzy
@sonofizzy Жыл бұрын
@@fsttag1 So, you have been or are now currently a member of a criminal organization? By the way, your analogy falls flat. Yellowstone is a ranch, not a criminal organization. It does not make a living from crime where extreme discipline may be at times warranted to keep the membership from going to jail. And you greatly exaggerate the consequences of Lloyd not being beaten down and crippled by Rip; and underestimate Lloyd's loyalty to the ranch. Oh, yes, the fight which brought Rip to bear was an essentially sanctioned event.

But that character is beyond that now. So is Beth. Theres never been a more admire able character than “Rip” in contemporary television. Complete loyalty to someone who saved his life. The ability to use and understand extreme violence when necessary, but also have kindness, love, empathy and compassion. and the knowledge and nature to know what is needed at the time.
