I was kind of surprised at your comment on how putting on makeup in public was contrary to customs. I visited Japan 20 years ago and I saw so many girls putting on makeup in the train, but also at other places like Starbucks (that included putting on glue on eyelids to make them appear double). I noticed it because from my culture it is really something you would not do outside of your home or maybe restrooms. Did the culture in Japan change over time? Or maybe was it only gyarus doing it and it was already seen as a nuisance by bystanders too.
