ive always found cosplay culture in japan to be very “no fun allowed”. lol. its kind of a shame. some of my best memories are being at western anime cons and just having fun, as a character, with friends. there wasnt this stiff expectation to perfectly represent the character in the most humble way possible. the culture of bonding through the cosplay experience between cosplayers, especially younger people, and creating their own alternate universe versions of those characters and creating a jokey atmosphere, with friends and new people alike - its a cultural bonding experience that i feel like is missing from japanese otaku culture. i dont really know if its for better or for worse.

these rules are vital. its a trend to drink alcohol and smoke as some characters in cosplay sometimes. and the photo area as well as not cosplaying in public or as uniformed staff is so useful

The rules of cosplaying in Japan sound it’s just cos, without the play. They seem to treat it more like modeling than actually having fun in costumes. That’s kind of a shame

When I was in Japan in 2015, I remember there was a this subculture of Otakus who were into American Military jackets and uniforms. I always wondered why that was a thing for a while
