Hey everyone, thanks for watching (and hopefully enjoying) our latest documentary about BioShock. We wanted to clear a few things up regarding the naming convention of our Rise and Fall videos: in this series, we do not only cover franchises that have shown a marked rise and decline in popularity or quality but also franchises that have been lost to time (Skate, Max Payne and InFamous to name a few). In these cases, "Rise and Fall" doesn't necessarily represent the trajectory of quality of the games in these franchises, but more the state of these franchises themselves (for example: when they're abandoned or mishandled by their publishers, when their sequels are eternally stuck in development hell or when their developers have simply lost interest in pursuing another entry).

Arguments from other commenters and viewers aside, at least you guys and gals gave a sense of clarity and fairness with this in mind. That I'm grateful, GVMERS. Anyhow, hope the Police Quest/S.W.A.T. games and the Freedom Force series will be explored sometime, what with Irrational Games also being involved with them. Just be mindful of the titles there and more, OK.

I have no nostalgia for these games because I played only recently, but I found Bioshock 1's level design really good. My fondest early moment was seeing the ice on some door in the first level and thinking "there must be something they give you to melt it", so I went off the beaten path to find Incinerate before I actually bothered with progressing "linearly". And of course aside from that Sander Cohen's level was just really fun to explore all around.

For some reason, I thought BioShock would be more of an RPG in a fully functioning city. Essentially, I expected the first planet in SW KOTOR. Bioshock 2 was the last game in the series that I ended up getting to, but it's easily my favorite. Despite not having any especially memorable twists like its predecessor or Infinite, I think both its overall story and gameplay end up holding up the best of the three. It wasn't mentioned in the video, but Jordan Thomas (B2's creative director) was the lead level designer for Fort Frolic, arguably the peak of Bioshock 1. I think he ended up understanding what made Bioshock great more than Ken Levine did, in the end.

Gonna get skewered for this: BioShock disappointed me. Loved System Shock 2, truly one of the all time greats and a distant immersive sim predecessor to modern games like Zelda: BotW & TotK. I salivated for two years waiting for BioShock, check the webpage day-in day-out, and buying on day one. And was left befuddled and underwhelmed that this... this thing... was the spiritual sequel to System Shock 2, a sophisticated immersive sim RPG having intentionally poor gun play, had been stripped of nearly all those "immersive sim RPG elements". Now left with nothing but poor gun play.

If you are skewered, you won't be alone in your thoughts: I had the same experience. I still really enjoyed it - but in the exact same way you'd enjoy $20K if you'd been promised $100K. Levine wanted to trade off complexity for popularity - and for better or worse he succeeded. It threw away most of the stuff I love about the gameplay. If it wasn't for the story they told, I wouldn't have bothered. And I would have missed out because I loved Bioshock 2 more than 1 and Inf combined.

I adore all 3 of these games, all for different reasons. I know folks sort of dunk on Infinite's gameplay, but the combat really does have its moments, typically in big set pieces when skyhook traversal is involved. I first played it back in high school, and I remember the story being unbelievably good back then. I don't really know how it's all aged, but the story of Infinite, as well as its Burial at Sea DLCs, really hit me with those bittersweet endings and realizations back when I was younger. I don't clamor for a new BioShock game, because I think we got a good, proper ending with Infinite and Burial at Sea that will stick with me for a long time. For me, this series will always stand as one of the best examples of how to craft worlds and stories in fiction, how some stories work better when you experience them quite literally through the eyes (and sometimes even words) of specific characters, and how gaming as a medium can blend those qualities together in such a unique and special way.

Bioshock 1 will always be iconic for its setting and looks, and bioshock 2 is just so much fun to play and the story hits all the right emotional bits. i liked the flashyness of Infinite once but it doesn't hold up. And its all wrapped around with highschool tier writing with no stakes because the alternative timeline jumping doesn't hold up if you think about it for 2 minutes.

Can easily recommend System Shock 2, to be honest. You'll even be fine without playing the first game, since it is well disconnected enough to fit as a standalone of sorts. Still, in case the first game's Remake comes out quite well, hope you'll try that afterwards too.

I'm a System Shock 2 "baby" myself. I in my late teens when SS2 appeared, and it quickly became my favorite game. When Bioshock came out, I came with it. Bioshock 2 was fun too, and I even prefered it over the original, because of how it focused on people. Bioshock Infinite, though... It was fun to play through once, and that's all the positive things I can say about it. Not every series can go out with a bang, like The Witcher trilogy, with its Blood and Wine expansion. Some die with a whimper.

I know Infinite was already very delayed, but I always wonder what the game would have been like if they hadn't scraped designs for hardware limitations reasons and just released months later on xbox one and PS4. I know preorders and such made that impossible but oh man if they had just planned that as a launch title for 8th gen consoles what could that game have been like. Despite loving Infinite it's really a step down from what they showed in previews.

I'm not sure if Bioshock should be considered the landmark that elevated first person shooters, it didn't invent anything, System Shock did it all in 1994. A few years later Deus Ex perfected the style. Bioshock is a "retro System Shock". I'm not saying it's bad, Bioshock 1 is great, but I don't think it's a pioneer. Deus Ex, System Shock 1 and 2 already existed.

I feel that way too. I can easily see how the Half-Life games were considered groundbreaking, but I fail to see how Bioshock is considered an influential touchstone. Most of its 'groundbreaking' qualities were already seen in System Shock 2 (And yes, I've finished and enjoyed all these games). Was it its atmospheric nature? That's the only thing I can think of.

Bioshock 1: when I first played it, I kinda recognized it has the same basic plot as System Shock 2, but the twists still surprised me. A really enjoyable game to this day. Bioshock 2: a more polished version of 1 with the best endings. I think my favorite of the series, especially the DLC. Bioshock Infinite: agree with the video - the gameplay was too simplistic. Great art design and graphics, Elizabeth and Songbird got me in the feels, but overall plot fell flat for me.

BioShock is my favourite series. I'll never forget being blown away, playing the demo for the first game back in 2007. The video here was fine, but I don't agree with the title. BioShock didn't fall - it still exists, both as a direct intellectual property with an upcoming game, and in all the ways it has influenced the many games around it. Also, Infinite wasn't the generic shooter you're kind of implying it to be. Infinite was amazing, just like the other two games were.

I am not a long term fan, I only tried these games out 2 years ago. But I liked all three games a lot, even Infinite. I can definitely see why longer term fans could be disappointed at how different it was, but as I wasn't the biggest fan of the past games' sandbox I wasn't too impacted. I mean I know these are completely different takes on FPS, but Bioshock 1 and 2 felt like Halo with no elites or brutes, or Doom with no enemies between the chaingunner and cyber demon. It just felt jarring fighting only cannon fodder grunts or monstrously tanky bosses.
