I want to share a story about how I almost got scared to death in F.E.A.R. multiplayer. It was one of the creepiest moments I ever had in my life, but hilarious at the same time. I was playing the multiplayer A LOT back then, but unlike the singleplayer, it had no horror elements. No Alma, no jump scares, just some deathmatch modes, CTF, etc. One night I wanted to play, but all the good servers in my region (EU) were already empty. So I hopped onto one, waiting for somebody to join while running around the map, practising movement etc. After 10 minutes or so, I had already given up hope for someone to join this late and got totally carried away with the movement exercices. Then suddenly, SHE appeared. At the end of a corridor. Just standing there, staring at me. Alma, the little girl in the red dress from the singleplayer campaign. ALMA! ON AN EMPTY MULTIPLAYER SEVER, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! For a second, my heart stopped beating and i thought a had finally lost my mind. Playing Alma in multiplayer was Impossible and never heard of. Is this a dream, did I fall asleep on my keyboard? But then she came at me. Zooming down the corridor with like 500mph and ending my soldier's life with a single punch to the balls. I was paralyzed and my whole body was shaking. I took a moment to collect myself and hit tab, to see if another player had joined. And it was another player indeed, with default name tag. I wasn't crazy or dreaming, what i had encountered that night was the most sophisticated server hack the game has seen at this point. I then wrote this player in chat, that he got me good and how this is for once a funny and creative hack, not your average noclip aimbot godmode every cheater kiddie was running at the time. He replied by letting a ton of super weapon pick ups rain on my head, before he disappeared forever. I've played a lot of horror games in my life (pretty much all the relevant ones I'd say), but nothing beats the feeling of isolation on an empty server late at night in a dark room before getting jumpscared by a hacking zombie girl in a red dress. If you are out there... good job bro! You shall play FEAR3 forever. In hell.

What an incredible incident !! Something similar happened when I was watching ,'The Exorcism of Emily Rose', a horror film on tv, alone in the house. There, it was being told that the Devil's hour was 3 AM and the clock stops then, and a burning smell starts to come. Immediately, I started to smell something burning !! Like, I wasn't imagining, something was burning ! I came out of my room & looked at the clock ... It was stuck at 3 : 05 something, but PM ! And then i found the burnt smell was from my neighbour burning leaves in front of his house ! Still, close enough !!! Weird, how sometimes mysticism plays with us, like we all feel sometimes that the present moment has happened before, & a strong sense of deja vu sweeps us, but it is nothing special & yet we feel we have been at that exact place & done that exact thing & stuff... What a mysterious world we live in !!

@tension Yes. You can holster your weapon and then run around and punch people. There was an exploit where you could spam crouch + punch at machine gun speed and basically instakill everyone you touch. She zoomed at me and duck-punched me to death. Right in the balls. I just thought "wow, Alma has a ducking and even a punching animation" - who would have thought.

I worked on FEAR Online as a graphic artist, mainly for the marketing, but I also created all of the Steam trading cards, icons, profile backgrounds, etc. I was responsible for the majority of marketing assets made for the game. However, it was all pretty rushed and more of a side project, I often worked on 3 or 4 games at a time, and FO was low on the list of priorities. I can honestly say that it wasnt handled like a true FEAR game. I should add that while the game was disappointing, to say the least, I am still proud of the work I did, and I did my best to make the experience better where I could. EDIT: I've made plenty of additional comments below. EDIT 2: It doesn't matter if you believe me or not. I'm not linking to any of my portfolios or anything like that, because people around here can be terrible, and I don't want to be spammed or "defamed" on my professional platforms. I also don't want want to use this account as a way to advertise myself. I don't even know if I'm legally allowed to say what I've said, as I've signed an NDA years ago, so I don't want to get in trouble because of that. I love the first F.E.A.R. game and it's expansion. The second and third one aren't bad games, essentially, but they have one big flaw: the check point saving system. Games like this become better when you sneak around and try to find the best route to solve missions. In such games, you should be able to save by yourself. A check point system encourages you to run like an idiot from one checkpoint to another. It's exactly the same with the Crysis series. I remember it being released too - very clearly. This was one of the games that really signalled a massive leap forward in gaming and graphics to me - I remember looking at pictures of the gameplay in magazines before the release, showing all the new and exciting lighting and particle effects. Pictures of intense gunfights with dust and shell casings and bullets and debris flying *_everywhere._* I remember seeing trailers with actual, moving gameplay closer to the release date showing everything those pictures promised and more besides. I saw all of that and I thought, "No way. There's just no way. There's not a computer in the whole *_world_* powerful enough to run a game *_THAT_* pretty. It's not possible. That *_HAS_* to be pre-rendered video. This can't be real. Can it?" Then came the day when I actually got to play it and found out that it really *_was_* real. My gaming history goes all the way back to the mid eighties when a game like Turrican was considered (among my friends and I) to be an uncommonly good looking one. We used to talk and dream and fantasize about something looking and playing like F.E.A.R back then, so the first time I played it on my own rig was a seriously big moment.

The only game to ever literally scare the shit out of me was the original F.E.A.R. I distinctly remember playing it in the dark after 12 a.m. with my headset on on my PC. There were moments I had just stop and turn on my lights. Also, there were moments I didn't want to progress through a hall way too especially in the dark. The game was a masterpiece imo.

I feel like FEAR 2 and 3 revealed a grueling problem with FPSs. That is, if you can’t adapt to COD’s formula then you are destined to fail. Case in point, Half Life 3 which we haven’t seen and still won’t for a long time - because if it launched now it would feel so incredibly generic.

Fear would really benefit from a Remake. One that can condense the AI & gunplay of 1, storyline of 2 & utter insanity of 3 to create the true FEAR game. But it has to switch to full on survival horror style. No craftables, but far more focus on surviving encounters rather than winning.

Hard disagree about Fear's MP being forgettable. It's easily one of my favorite MP's of all time. Add the combat of the first game but against people? Instantly something as simple as tdm is one of the best. EVEN HARDER DISAGREE about extraction point. Extraction point to me is the true end to fear. A perfect ending to such a messed up situation. It took what the original F.E.A.R. did and pushed it to the extreme. Nothing ever came close to this, not even the base game.

Extraction point is my fav FEAR game (best balance between combat, leveldesign and horror), but there is no denying that it suffers from a weak story and almost no explanations whatsoever (Why and how is Paxton backston? Why is Alma suddenly protecting point man from replicas and seemingly opposing Paxton? Nothing of that is explained ingame). Extraction point raises more questions than it answers and sadly, Perseus Mandate didn't bring us the conclusion the timeline needed. If anything, Perseus Mandate felt even more random, without adding anything meaningful to the story or offering any interesting gameplay.
@Jarekthegamingdragon4 жыл бұрын
@@LegioXXI I felt all of that made sense with alma's schizophrenic actions. Extraction point also gave us the most satisfying end to a F.E.A.R. game. Their end goal was understood and realized. As for Perseus Mandate....it's really bad. I didn't even bother covering it on my channel.
