The history of a religion that spread across the world from the Middle East to Europe and China before going extinct.
Support these lectures with a donation www.paypal.com/ca/fundraiser/...
Founded by the Iranian prophet Mani in the 3rd century AD, Manichaeism was a successful world religion for over a millennia and was briefly (before the founding of Islam) Christianity’s chief rival in the West. We’ll look at the teachings of Mani and the spread of his religion from Europe to China, along with its eventual decline and extermination.

I know I'm super late to the party but just wanted to mention that the Iranian perception of Mani differs from other Muslim countries. I remember vividly reading about him in novels and books as a child and teenager in a very positive light. His death is always portrayed as very tragic akin to the crucifixion of Christ. And the majority of people would see Mani in a very positive way, even our school books that are written under regressive and highly conservative Islamic state don't consider Mani as 'heretical' or a 'madman' but another prophet of God.

As a US citizen I've always heard Iran is pretty good at embracing their non-muslim heritage despite Islamic leadership in most countries not doing so. The only other I could think of is Egypt who takes pride in the Egyptian history pre-Greek/Roman/Arab invasions.

Scholarly yet relaxed, detailed yet unbiased. Thanks for your work. One small thing about the Uyghurs, at risk of sounding like a CCP apologist, is that (as far as we know outside Xinjiang and China) they are being oppressed but have not been entirely moved into the infamous reeducation camps. There are millions of Uyghurs, and I understand they form the majority of the region's population. If the government really relocated them all into camps, they'd have to relocate millions more in their place to keep the region economically functional. Of course, it could be argued whether the CCP values population control or economic growth more, and at any rate, what the Uyghurs are experiencing collectively is horrific and not to be understated. Anyway, I'm just nitpicking. Great content on fascinating topics as always, John.

What's really disgusting right now is that the Western ban on Xinjiang cotton has created massive unemployment of Uighurs in Xinjiang. When you think about it, it of course makes zero sense that all the Xinjiang cotton would have been produced by the work camps. Rather, the local population have been the primary supplier of that cotton, and the local population are who? UIGHURS! The ban on Xinjiang cotton is a direct attack on the livelihoods of Uighurs themselves. There's a Chinese Tiktok (douyin) video of an Uighur guy deliberately praying in front of a police station so he'd be arrested and sent back to a work camp because when he got out the first time his job was gone and his family had gone bankrupt and slaughtered all their sheep. He was so desperate he decided to go back to camp so he would burden the Chinese gov't instead of his family.

I've heard the reason other religions hated them so much was because manichees would tailor their message to whichever religious group they preached to. To christians, they preached like christians; to buddhists, they preached like buddhists; to muslims, they preached like muslims; and to zoroastrians, they preached like zoroastrians. @@samisiddiqi5411 bahai faith will always be superior to islam. orthodox islam is the only religion that preaches invasion of all of the world in order for non-muslims to pay taxes, or be enslaved with their families. the tenets of bahai are symilar to those of christianity and buddhism. universalism and virtue. while orthodox islam is based on tribalism and violence to the other. the only thing maybe you have a point is that religions should not mix with politics or with foreign policy of governments. but notice that it was not the bahai who started hostility with iran, it was the opposite. once the psycho ayatollah khomeini got in power, he started killing everyone who was not in favour of his vision of a theocratic islamic iran, including bahais, who were peacefully converting iranians, something that leads to death penalty nowadays. hence if bahais are siding with hostile governments is on an act of despair because iran is killing their people.

So you said at the start or near to it that people stopped thinking that the universe was chaotic and that lead to new thoughts more akin to ethics and behaviour. That people started to move from the sacrifice mindset to the moral one. But it's not cut and dry like this. God in the bible even says to the people thousands of years ago that He requires obedience rather than sacrifice. The sacrifices were allowed to atone for breaking the laws of God. When a person sinned at this time period of pre crucifixion, they would run to the temple and ask the priest to make atonement for them. Relying on the ability of the priest and the animal they brought for that atonement. The Christian does exactly the same. They sin and run to the high priest in heaven, Jesus and ask for His sacrifice and His abilities to atone for them. They just didn't need to bring an animal. Just watching further. Once again I have to tell you it's not "Jewish" law, it's God's laws. According to the Bible, who gave mankind these laws? The Jews, or Hebrews or Moses or God? According to the Bible it was from God. So they are not Jewish laws. Was Jesus a man or was He a divine being like classical Greek figures? Well He was definitely in the flesh but let me ask you, would Jesus have a full complement of chromosomes? I ask because, His flesh came from an earthly mother from that line of Abraham, fulfilling the promise God gave Abraham and fulfilling the circumcision law, but His father was not a man but God, God does not have chromosomes and did not have sex with Mary so could never pass on those chromosomes we all get from our fathers which is the normal human condition.

So Mani's father was an Ebionites and Mani had an idea that he was an eschatological last prophet that is identified with the Paraclete. Is their any sense that the prophet Muhammad and the early Muslims saw Muhammad this way? Islamic theology is very similar to Ebionite theology and many Muslims would claim that the Paraclete was a future prophet (an idea that some academics believe too ie that Jesus is predicting someone else's coming). It also seems interesting that Islam didn't really try to incorporate Manichaeism (or Zoroastrianism for that matter) into its theology. Perhaps because the prophet Muhammad is making the same claim that Mani is in a sense for himself.

You make a good point that the lack of long-term official state support really kept Manichaeism from becoming entrenched in the same way Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Zoroastrianism (until Islam came along) did. Though that doesn't explain why a diasporic religion like Judaism survived. Perhaps there's a different set of social, economic, or political factors which explain that.

Awesome video! After watching, my conclusion is that Mani aimed to make himself the head of a new religion, while alive, in a way Jesus and Buddha did not, and even Muhammad did not to the same extent. To be clear, I'm not accusing Mani of wrongdoing or of behaving in bad faith: mine is an observation, not a judgment. But it's little wonder that such a person just would not be fully trusted by secular kings and emperors, who would have worried about empowering a rival source of loyalty while offending millions of loyal subjects of other established faiths. Also, Mani was preaching to the converted, as it were. Early Pauline Christians were preaching to pagans, as were the earliest Muslims, and paganism is just not as widely and fully satisfying as Christianity and Islam are. Early Christian preaching to Jews just did not work well because Jews already had a fully satisfying and theologically valid relationship with the same Abrahamic God, and Mani confronted an analogous problem as the people he targeted, whether Zoroastrians, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, or whatever, typically already had a satisfying theology.

Sir, I apologize. Talking about the Cambodian (?) mass-hack, I know I just insulted you for implying you and they co-operate . I know, I have no idea what you've had to go through to get where you are. I know, to get to your classes, my situation was humiliating and kinda painful. Lots of people got hurt. You know I can hear you, that isn't easy to get. I'm sorry, and I'm sorry for the insult I implied about you when I don't know you. I'm sorry.

So, basically, Mani had a strained relationship with his father, he was exposed to Christianity, and decided to go off and start his own copy cat religion to spite his father. Common dynamic. Then after that Mohammad did the same. But interesting to note that only Jesus claimed to be God, not a prophet.

Honestly I just dont understand how people fail to see the irony in how one man (a Christian bishop) who believes in a god that cannot be proved (outside of taking for granted what is said in a book) would hypocritically call out these other religion memebers for being maniacs and their reasonings as being perverse. One could easily just flip that back at the early Christian church and cry "can't you see the similarities. The Christian church only survives because it had an empire to back it and swords to enforce it and gullible people who need "meaning" from wherever that may come

Christianity were in favor of having families and children and therefore advantage over dualistic religions that were against sex. Answering your question, there were few people who were able to think at this level of abstraction in that time. Most of the people all the time like stability provided by the power, anarchism only is possible because there is power that provides agriculture with stability and you get food despite your theoretical anarchism.

nriab23 To be fair to Eusebius if you were a bishop you would be irritated by people who had new things to say about Jesus. They were disturbing the consensus that generations of bishops were laboriously working out. Poor Eusebius would have a fairly tough time staying orthodox during the Arian controversy.

For the orthodox Christians, it became all about preserving a power structure: authority and bureaucracy. The spiritual details were almost beside the point. If something in the details of the dogma didn't agree with the power structure, dogma was changed. Religions that placed enlightenment and spirituality as the highest importance couldn't compete.

360 and 12 made sense. 72 made me curious. This is what I found. It is the smallest Achilles number, as it's a powerful number that is not itself a power. 72 is an abundant number. With exactly twelve positive divisors, including 12 (one of only two sublime numbers), 72 is also the twelfth member in the sequence of refactorable numbers

It appears that Mani was the first to claim to be "the Last Prophet" and the "Seal of the Prophets", both of which were later applied to Muhammad. The Bible and the teachings of Paul makes it clear that the term "prophet" is a role that some may accept as part of God's ministry to the people and those who promulgate its vision. With the book of Revelations calling for two prophets to come and prophecy for 1260 days prior to the return of Jesus and the final standoff between God and Satan, there have likely been numerous persons who have claimed to be one of those two prophets. It seems like Islam did not want to deal with that every so often, and therefore declared Muhammad to be the "Last Prophet", which they claim to this day. The Mormons call their leader the "Prophet" of the church, and the Evangelical community is full of quack prophets on television.

Religions are simply a purely human act. The reason for the attack on Manichaeism is the intersection of interests between religions. Manichaeism was able, in record time, to turn into a world religion, and this caused the emergence of fear in other religions, as if it had turned into a trade conflict in the name of God, whatever his characteristic. Notice: The Prophet Mani was an Iraqi from the city of Babylon and his name was Mani son of batek and hes mother name marry ??????

At the beginning of the presentation Mani was criticized and also during all the presentation. Many people treat Jesus as Satan and all their disciple were persecuted, and you did exactly the same (this facts don't mean that Jesus was wrong). "The public need to be the judge", not you, this is a polarized presentation from the beginning, you put yourself in the position of a Judge and you already made the sentence.
