His arm strength wasn’t there as he still favored his leg coming off of injury. He was still playing too soon. Then took all the heat for the team losing despite the defense not playing well. Same situation happened with Cousins initially Jay Gruden backs Cousins where he ripped RG3 a new one. Players are not going to want to play hard for a player the coach has no desire to help. As far as ego all QBs have an ego. It’s designed that way by default.

It's unfortunate that his lack of self-awareness and the owner empowering him to where he could tell the coaching staff that he wasn't running the read-option anymore were major factors in his downfall. I wouldn't look at that as an example of what to expect from Lance. If anything look at what they did with Cousins. But yeah. It's going to be a ton of fun to watch this year. And for a long time to come.

Trey Lance is not NFL fast though. He's barely fast enough to be considered fast in division 2 college football. Also, you don't have a qb do the RG3 thing unless you hate that qb and fully intend to replace him. Running qb is not something that will ever work out.
@James-kp8mg3 жыл бұрын
@@bolbyballinger He didn't want him but he adjusted to him. He drafted Cousins because he knew he still needed a quarterback. RGKnee is still not a starter after years to learn to play NFL football. The guy just isn't capable. Shanahan was smart enough to see that before the draft. People need to stop making excuses for an overrated college football player. If he has the ability to be a pocket passer he'd be a starter by now. But one offseason quarterback training camp after another and 5 or 6 years of experience and he's a roster bubble player every year. Stop making excuses for the brand. And Lance will use running like Elway did under Shanahan. Like a quarterback that can play in the pocket. He doesn't need world class speed to be effective. Tom Brady got drafted when the average qb 40 time was about .2 slower than it is now. Being slow is in no way advantageous as a qb, but when your surrounded by generally unathletic qbs it can seem that way. A qb knockdown is 3 times more likely to cause an injury than a designed qb run.

"The zone read was never figured out" Actually, it was. In 2013 there was a huge rules change which allows defense to hit the QB in a running posture. Also, 1 year ago you (Alex) broke down the slide and scrape scheme for defenses to take this away as well. Teams don't really use the read option anymore. Rather, as Brett Kollmann broke this down about 6 months ago in his video "The Ravens Offense is an actual nightmare."
@Deuce10423 жыл бұрын
Yeah the Ravens don’t run zone read as much as people think they do.
@AlexRollinsNFL3 жыл бұрын
Good point on the rule change. But teams have always used the scrape exchange, it's not a new concept that was invented in 2013 post RG3 rookie year. It was really teams developing multiple answers and practicing their options rules in the offseason and modifying them to best defend RG3 specifically
@PaulGaither3 жыл бұрын
@@AlexRollinsNFL - You are correct. I would argue that Colin Kaepernick was the biggest threat of them all entering 2013 after a Super Bowl run which saw him set the all time record for most yards running by a QB in any NFL game - which he still holds - and also throwing for 267 yards, which was more than Rodgers 257 in the same game. Despite not winning the super bowl, Colin was the most dangerous QB entering 2013. Too bad he was exposed as the 1 read (and sometimes zero read) QB he truly was. When the Rams trolled him by not covering either WR on one play and he still handed the ball off is an all time low-light.
@cherp75223 жыл бұрын
@@AlexRollinsNFL there is always some catching up and adjusting. That’s why great coaches understand who they are matching up with and change and disguise what they are trying to do. That will never change. Clearly the Shanahans were never interested in developing the RG3 system at that time. It was thought to be college offense. Shanny was a west coast offense guru. And that is what he wanted to get back to.
@koodigocrxzy465 Жыл бұрын
It’s more so that there is only one way to stop the concept, which is the scrape exchange, or bringing both safeties into the box. The issue is a scrape exchange is not a defensive technique that meshes well with play action crossers or in breaking routes hence why that had such enormous sucess with l play action., and against any other type of read play, like counter bash, or inverted veer. Asking a linebacker to scrape over as soon as he sees that action is essentially selling out defensive rules for the threat of the run. When your playing truly 8 on 8 in the box with qb designed runs, there are no “answers” A linebacker has to exchange gaps as soon as he sees the read man unblocked.m, so sift action on a play action pass will simultaneously block an end man crashing out for the run, and bring the linebacker responsible for the hook curl/vert hook into the a gap. The league has been generally lucky Lamar and cam lacked the outside threats to punish 1 high coverages that they faced at a tremendous rate.

But in 2013 he wanted to go 0 to 100.. what a shame. I think he could have done it!

@@AlexRollinsNFL from my perspective honestly they were ahead of their time. Being prolifically fast isn't really needed as a QB. Honestly if you watch A-Rod or even Mitch Trubisky run they're not tearing of 40 you gains out running corners, but an effective 10-15 yd running threat is what makes any option scheme operationally dangerous because the defense can't call certain schemes/blitzes on their schedule throwing off the rhythm of play calling. And when gap discipline is a liability even an RG3 with a bad knee is objectively a real threat.

Thanks as always man!! Yeah.. RG3 went on First Take a few years ago and denied it.. but I think he was lying. As I said, there were rumors it was his parents and not him. They saw how Kirk Cousins was used in the game that RG3 sat out in 2012. Cousins wasn't asked to run so either RG3 and/or his family got mad and went to Snyder who demanded change. No bueno
@cherp75223 жыл бұрын
RG3 said that he did not demand that? Yes, he wanted some of that but a great coach would have said let’s migrate you there year by year. No, the Shannies drafted Kirk cousins who was not ready to start any wear and lost almost every game he started. Contrast what the Ravens did while drafting Lamar and compare that situation with what RG3 inherited in Washington. That is where you will find the real truths! RG3 never had a problem with coaches before running into that coach and organization. Facts!

@@twondagreat8893 how was king cousins smart when you had already given up so many picks just to draft the one trick pony he did not want? He could have drafted another op player ready to play them win now? Ask Aaron Rodgers about that one. You are doing nothing more than quoting the Shanahan leaked media reports. Griffin said he did not demand such thing. They were only tolerating RG3 until they could do what they wanted to do just like all nfl coaches manage to do. Again, ask Aaron Rodgers about how that works! Shanahans record with the skins pre RG3 was dreadful!!! And when Cousins went in to start for RG3 I think with shanny he was something like 1-7! 2012 cousins was 1-0 with 4TD and 3 Int. And we all saw what he did taking over in that playoff game. The next year cousins was 0-3, 4 TDS and 7 INTs. Shanny was fired and that was smart to you!

Many QB’s has success in their first season because there isn’t a lot of film for opposing teams to study. Defensive players and coaches get paid too. RG3 relied on his athleticism and probably has done so since he was young. When that athleticism was taken away from him due to injuries, he was really good. He was a single read QB and if his receiver wasn’t open, he was off running. Not being as mobile he wasn’t able to just take off running anymore. His arc is similar to Kaepernick’s, who was on his way to being a good QB, until Harbaugh decided to try and make him a pocket passer, but he lacked the ability to get through progressions, read defenses and change plays.

@LoanwordEggcorn3 жыл бұрын
@@AlexRollinsNFL I think Kyle is slow playing it, but is quietly very excited about what he can do in his offense with Trey Lance. We got some hints of it already in the 2021 exhibition games with Lance's roll outs, deep passes both on the same side and across his body, stepping up out of the pocket, etc., and some relatively safe runs to the edge. Also RPO/Read Option/Zone Read plays where Trey has the legitimate option to keep the ball and run. He is absolutely a legitimate run threat, and looks sturdier than Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar, etc., but you still probably would not want to risk your QB on runs very often. No one wants and RG3-like outcome for Trey. (I definitely prefer pocket movement or roll outs/step ups, vs runs for QB safety.) That all said Trey has already shown that he can get easy yards on some keepers. Just please don't get him hurt. Kyle is supremely good at option football at the NFL level and a QB like Trey creates opportunities for other receivers and ball carriers by forcing 11 on 11 football. Defenses need to cover Trey, which generally creates 1 on 1 matchups everywhere else. (An exotic defense like bear front can sort of counter a running QB, but then that should open up the passing game, etc. Kyle would know how to attack it.) Not to mention the substituting of QBs in the same series, which is fun, but probably won't last. What's most impressive about the latter is how seamlessly the offense executed with the QB substitutions. That speaks very well to their coaching and practices.

The reason he got injured was because he kept running so much - looks wonderful when no one is touching him but all those hits add up & eventually as the defenses learned to funnel him inside where the big LB's were waiting instead of the small DB's - an injury was just waiting to happen Snyder, if he did make the call, made the right call He HAD to develop as a passer which he failed to do

WRONG! Casual. Vick lasted a long time; his personal problems cut short his career (still was over a DECADE)! Wilson (bad O line makes this pocket passer have to scramble a lot) : NEVER a major injury,: SB champ; over a DECADE at QB, and counting! Steve Young; Fran Tarkenton, Randall Cunningham, etc .--lasted a long time!, ...and LAMAR JACKSON: MVP, careful to avoid heavy hits since PeeWee,( irrespective of ignorant, fans LYING on his game); NEVER any major injury, (regardless of the schadenfreude of talking heads and stupid fans); he's NOT "another Kap or RG3"; (he's BETTER): more multi talented, injury free , humble and coachable! The tried trope of running QBs getting injured is a lie. Brady (ACL), Mahomes, Josh Allen , Andrew Luck, Darnold, Baker, Thiesman, Alex Smith, Carson Wentz, Sam Bradford,--too many to list here---- etc... have ALL been injured, sick, out for multiple games. Did you know that champion hurdler at Baylor, (his records still stand), turned QB, RG3, had TWO ACL surgeries during College, way BEFORE the draft!!! He had weak knees, (basically),when he was DRAFTED! FACTS. Plus, understandably, he was scared of Cousins--same draft class- taking his starting job, (ironic),and RG3 just didn't want to be out the real length of time it took to fully recover. Also, as he ADMITTED: In his arrogance, he changed the playbook, wouldn't listen to ANYONE, went over the Coaches' head, wouldn't slide trying to be tough, and had a bad attitude on the team! Yet, RG3 was around for YEARS, (it just seems short): he was just injury prone--even STANDING STILL. #getthefactsright

Washington fan here, 2012 RG3 was and still is my favorite football player of all-time. He made me believe anything was possible if you had enough confidence and determination in yourself. It truly sucks that his career took a major nose dive after that Playoff game. After reading a biography book about him from 2013 and seeing how everything unfolded since then, I feel Washington did him a huge disservice by keeping him in that playoff game, but that's not to say he wasn't at fault either. I feel like he became a victim of his own hype and stubbornness (an ugly side to playing a sport like football), plus I feel he let certain criticisms affect him negatively. It's all ugly viewing for me anytime I think about it. But I still love him and everything he did for me during his time in Washington. He's a perfect example of how nothing is guaranteed and that we shouldn't have high expectations on anything, regardless of how much promise someone/something has

I'm a recovering Redskins fan and lived through the RGIII saga. He was the master of the read option play that NFL teams hadn't had to worry about for years, he had homerun speed, he could throw a little so that when teams tried to stack the box or they bit on the run fake he could eat them alive on the tight end post or the slot post play, and they drafted a pretty good running back way below the radar in Alfred Morris who put up 1600 yards, a 4.8 average and 13 TDs. I will also say that RGIII was not a good deep passer but he hit more than his share of lucky long passes his rookie year. But as everyone saw, there's a reason you don't let your QB run in the NFL, especially if he's a skinny kid like RGIII. And he just would not learn to protect himself by sliding at the end of a run.
