Crazy how the Rams were looking like a team with a bright future during that Super Bowl season, had Goff and Gurley coming off as being the best QB and RB for seasons to come! Fast foward 2 seasons and they not even on the anymore 😔
@DanTheMeek3 жыл бұрын
While that's true, I think there's plenty of reason for hope with Stafford instead of Goff, their biggest hurdle is honestly just the division they play in. For the second straight year all 4 teams in their division are potential super bowl contenders, that not only makes getting out of the division more challenging, but means the teams that do make it out are usually more worn down and beat up then their conference peers. But their defense is arguably the best in the league, if they could get even average production out of the QB spot instead of the garbage Goff was giving them, the skys the limit, and I think Stafford can give them far more then just average production, they just need to weather the first few games of the season where Stafford is getting accustomed to the new offense and his new WR crew. And to be clear, I say all this through gritted teeth as an AZ Cardinals fan, I'm most certainly rooting against the Rams, but I'm not so blinded by division rivalry to not see and acknowledge just how great that team is. There are zero easy games in this division, but the team we fear the most is easily the Rams now that the QB position, the weakest link of the Rams, has been so thoroughly upgraded.

@@derwolfpack3599So with that thinking, i’m guessing guys like Alvin Kamara and Christian McCaffrey are bums? Todd Gurley was the best running back in the league over those 2017-2018 seasons. Had he not suffered that knee injury in week 1 of 2018 against the Raiders, which was the injury that caused his degenerative knee issues (he was still able to play well the next 9-10 games of that season, but due to that injury, his knee slowly just got worse and worse and ultimately ended up becoming degenerative) he would still to this day be one of the best running backs in the game. Mind you, he’s only 27 years old, and was only 25 when the Rams let him go in 2020. For you to call him a “flash in the pan who’s an overpaid bum” tells me either 1. As a huge LA Rams fan since the 60s as a very young boy. Roman Gabriel, Jack Snow and of course the Fearsome Foursome of Merlin Olsen, Deacon Jones, Rosey Greer and Lamar Lundy through the 80s...i find this analysis very accurate. I love the breakdown of the offensive scheme that Coach Sean developed. The initial look was pretty much the same, confusing the defense. After a while, the league and of course the brilliant mind of Bellichek exposed it for that Super Bowl championship. That game was incredibly tough to witness. Much like how Terry Bradshaw broke our hearts back in 1980. Here's to success and a better tomorrow this season!

Great analysis of how the 6-1 hindered the Rams rushing attack. However, didn’t the Rams find a lot of success -particularly towards the end of last season - by running more toss crack, duo power runs up the middle to take advantage of the defense being so horizontal, etc? Key examples of this in the Bears & 2nd Seattle game from last year. Wish we would’ve been able to see more of that in this video. Makes it look like McVay did nothing to adjust but add an extra TE when he did in fact do more than that.

Exactly... just as this KZbin creator was able to see all this and make this video. Mcvay knows this and already got a game plan. We had a lot of injuries especially on the offensive line. Gurley($>Stats),Cooks(Sb Drops and concussions),Peters(Inconsistent+ $ due),Talib(injured 50%+ as a Ram).... We made a full push at the sb and came 2 cooks drops short.. but what has me excited as a ram fan is that we have a winning culture where players are held accountable and to a STANDARD. Cam Akers has me super excited because of the situation he had in college with the bad oline. And Van Jefferson is a sleeper pick he also had a situation in ole miss then transferred to Florida.played well against SEC corners with inconsistent Qb play. Both of those players and Ramsey are replacing Gurley, Cooks and Peters all who where gonna get paid or was getting paid top money in there position. So we just paying Ramsey (huge upgrade over peters and Talib is on his way out tbh) top money instead. Ready to shock some haters and so call analysts. MOBSQUAD...

People talk about the drop off of the rams... The players are almost all the same from their Super Bowl run. Injuries, sure. Fatigue, probably. The biggest hole I saw in the 3rd year was really the league adapting to a lot of McVay's scheming. This is why I laugh when people try to put McVay in the same air as Shannahan. Shanny has been scheming offense for about a decade with success across the entire decade. I think after this up coming season, we will know for sure who the better offensive mind is between Shanny and McVay. If the niners fall off after their Super Bowl run, we can most likely attribute that to the league adjusting to Shannahan because the niners also retained almost their entire Super Bowl roster minus #99. This season is going to be sweet to watch as a NFC West fan. Best division by far.

If you’ve been paying attention to Gurley BEFORE last year you’d know he’d been putting up great numbers with a revolving door O line. Even this year when they covered for the O-lines deficiency and ran more power runs, Gurley consistently made plays despite the incompetent line. It was Mcvay’s stubbornness to not change the zone scheme overall to fit his slower, rookie line that damaged Gurley’s production more than anything. Obviously O-line and rb play are connected but it’s not like Gurley has always been like Zek or any 9ers back who are in systems were any nfl back could put up good-great numbers.

As I watched the New England Patriots defense shut down the LA Rams offense in Super Bowl LIII I kept thinking myself that so many other NFL teams are going to spend the 2019 offseason watching film from that game. And sure enough that's what they did as the Rams offense lost its punch and power in 2019. As for Todd Gurley I think he has enough left in the tank to be a productive back. He definitely showed that in the divisional playoff game against the Cowboys. Now with the Atlanta Falcons I don't think Todd Gurley will have the same production he had with the Rams back in 2017 and 2018. However, he is going to keep defenses that the Atlanta Falcons face off against honest because of Dirk Kotter's vertical scheme . Therefore I think it was a very smart move by Todd Gurley to sign with the Atlanta Falcons.

Ravens fan here who came to watch since AFTER Gurley's average season with the Falcons, the Ravens have interest. At times I lost sight of the point (Gurley's fall) and was thinking this could be called McVay's rise and fall lol. But you gave an interesting analysis about the concoction of variables that led to Gurley's perceived demise. It wasn't just his injuries but failed offensive adjustments and o-line changes that led to his decreased production. The Falcons season didn't show that Gurley is recovered but who knows how Gurley could perform in the Ravens run heavy RB friendly scheme as a 3rd option. What's scary though is how the Ravens suffered from the same affliction on offense as the Rams. Failed adjustments and other teams scheming up ways to stop them. It hasn't hurt RB numbers as much but has prevented the Ravens from getting to that next step when nobody was scared of the passing game. If the Ravens adjust well this season, and Gurley actually signs with them and puts up below average numbers (per carry since he'd be a backup), then we'd have to say the knee issue is a real problem even over scheme. Thanks for giving a different analysis 👍. You should do a follow up vid when he signs with someone (looks like Lions un mix as well) to compare the schemes and give analysis of his Falcons season if you haven't already.

This is an excellent analysis and exactly what I said back in 2017 that the key to the Rams offense was the offensive line which was generating gaping holes that Todd Gurley could run through giving Jared Goff massive time during play-action to find open receivers. Will McVay be able to recreate this magic with his new draft choices? Also the effectiveness of the 6-1 defense is two fold, and McVay was totally out of his league with no ability to adjust in game. First, you can't run again the 6-1, so removing a receiver and replacing with a tight end is the EXACT wrong move. The key to defeat the 6-1 is a) speedy receivers, b) crossing routes, in addition to c) sending one receiver long to spread the field. ALSO, receivers are NOT to engage defenders at any cost. In this scenario Gurley could have been extremely effective because of his speed and utilized as either 1) an additional receiver, or 2) a blocking back to provide Goff with addition time. Hopefully this analysis will teach any coach that the way to defeat the 6-1 is NOT to run, but to pass. Furthermore, notice from (10:48, 11:37) however the Patriot nose guard (#90) pushes the Ram center (#65) two yards deep into the offensive backfield! This defensive player needed to be double teamed. This is something a high school coach should have noticed. When their man can beat your man, you are in trouble. Who wants it more?

After rewatching this bears game (2019) todd actually had a pretty good game and Mcvay didn’t just run the zone scheme. So I don’t think Mcvay is done just quite yet
@AlexRollinsNFL4 жыл бұрын
Oh, I don't think McVay is done at all. I think the core of his scheme worked really well for two seasons and now he's learning to adjust. He's still a good coach, I just don't think he's elite like we all thought

13:36 "Despite the narrative that Gurley's injury made him disappear and his career is over, I really think that story line is overblown. I believe he's still the same running back talent we've seen before..." Nice video. You've got half the equation, here's the other half... The Rams needed out from under Gurley's contract. It was paralyzing the team's ability to remain viable, strong, and intact. The Rams not only allowed the "degenerative knee" narrative to be a shadow over the team the whole season but they welcomed it because they knew they were going to shed themselves of Gurley after the year. The problem was... if Gurley had another 2017-2018 type year, the organization would have been mercilessly crucified by fans and press alike. How could you justifiably waiving somebody after he just put up 1800-2000 yards and 19-22-23 TDs? You couldn't, it wouldn't be possible. They needed Gurley to have a sub-par statistical season so that when they waived him, people would fall back to "degenerative knee" and would be more understanding about how the team had to do it, couldn't justify paying him his contract if he wouldn't be able to play to it. This was the off-the-field sinister element hiding in the shadows that nobody will talk about. Gurley is still close enough to Gurley. He's still a very talented back capable of near former production. But... in an entirely different offensive system who knows how he'll translate. Still good enough to be a second round fantasy talent I'd wager and especially attractive if you can get him in the third.

Oh yeah as a Rams fan I'm glad he's gone money wise or else we'd be screwed. We've done a great job in this draft especially replacing TG with Akers. I fully believe the Rams will make a deep run this year as long as that OL stays somewhat healthy

Good analysis and breakdown. I am curious though since he didn't have a good year in Atlanta. Was Atlanta's OL that bad as well or did Gurley actually lose some explosiveness due to the injury?
@abuibu4 жыл бұрын
I think they cut him more because of his attitude / locker room issues rather than his banged up knee. I feel like he's been too vocal in wanting more of the ball when McVay knew it didn't really work well with the o line they had, shifting to medium passing with 12 personnel and more movement for Goff out of pocket. I think Rams should've played Henderson a lot more last year and should've kept Gurley for at least one more year before cutting him. Having said that, I'm excited to see Cam Akers in action.

This one hurt. When Gurley was on, he was SO awesome. He was the hinge that made the Rams work and his highlights are just beautiful. Buuuuut, like the old saying goes, 'nothing ever ends good'. The end is never sweet, bitter sweet is you're lucky...but its usually a slow painful, pride destroying ride down.

@@AlexRollinsNFL I grabbed him in the 3rd round, perhaps a little bit of a reach but it's because I really think he's gonna be a good RB this year. I also drafted David Johnson in the 4th, so I've got two comeback kids in my starting lineup, ha ha.
