Streetwear, it's a genre of fashion that saw me into adulthood. What was once a niche subculture, blossomed into a dominate force in the global fashion industry.
Emerging from the skateboarding and hip-hop scenes of the late 20th century, streetwear's early days were characterized by DIY aesthetics and a strong sense of community.
Brands like Stüssy and Supreme started as small, independent labels catering to local enthusiasts, but their unique styles and limited releases quickly garnered widespread attention and created a cult following.
All this attention, as we know, lead to global notoriety and ultimately, over saturation. Today, streetwear is a far cry from the glory days of past. Which has many asking, Is Streetwear Dead?
Let's discuss, I'm Nate The Great from TakeFlight214.com and this is the Rise and Fall of Streetwear, From Rebellion to Runways.

Fashion is about 'Feeling' and combining a dope look. Consuming for 'Hype' is a loser mentality. Spend cuz u genuinely like what u see and not because a celebrity is wearing it.

Fresh Jive was an early street wear brand that hardly gets a mention, but their clothes were very popular in the mid 90’s.

THANK YOU! What a wonderful mini- documentary. I've always gravitated towards streetwear not realizing that's what it was. I worked for Russell Simmons for a while so had access to a lot of Baby Phat, but more than that I remembered always loving Triple 5 Soul.

As an artist that makes street wear and wears street wear .. it can never die we ALWAYS creating and richer people always taking and selling ideas from the street which makes the street wear scenery almost double ...even in foreign countries like D.R especially...they dress like our older years .. still ..I've visited in 2016,2018 they love "hip hop style culture" and Haiti has a little new York or something like that an area that moves like NYC . Hustlers ...cars ... tourist etc ..

I think streetwear is just some people's style preference. The masses might not pay as much attention to specific branding but it'll never really "die". Growing up in Jersey, during the early 80's, it was definitely more niche but I still saw a lot of elements incorporated into what almost everyone my age wore. When I transplanted to Cali in the late 80's what's considered streetwear nowadays was basically the way everyone dressed in one form or another. It was very interesting watching streetwear evolve for 40 some odd years. It'll probably stay low key in a lot of people's rotation and maybe cycle back with some brands and designs reaching viral trending status again in 5-10 years...give or take.

This is a very realistic take. People seem to forget the 20 year rule in fashion.

Yeah, I pretty much found what I was comfy in as a 14yr old skater in 91 and just never really changed it(subject to availability obviously) but in the decades since, I've seen people looking kind of similar to me appear and dissappear again at least half a dozen times according to trends..

If it wasn’t for jean-michel basquiat, there wouldn’t be any streetwear brand Shawn Stussy had to adapt so he brought that reggae hip-hop influence to his audience, he had no choice. You can’t name any Caucasian brand that does not influence from Melanated kids in the New York City

As an old fart that grew up skating in the 80s, chasing tail while listening to the Geto Boys in the 90s. We didn't call it Streetwear, and whatever it was died in the 90s. What followed was the fashion business of FOMO. A big thing for us back then was the brand couldn't be mainstream or you were using it in a way that it wasn't designed. An example is Jordan 1 sneakers to skate or military fatigue pants because they were baggy. The only mainstream brands I really remember people using as intended were Carhartt and Levi's jackets. The Levi's was usually covered in patches, buttons, and safety pins. Both were usually scuffed and dirty.

The hooded sweatshirt, or hoodie, was invented in the 1930s by the Knickerbocker Knitting Company, which later became Champion Athletic Apparel. The Black Panthers wore custom graphic tees in the 70s . Andy Warhol had t shirts with logos on. Streewear began way befor Stussy .
